Re: Sankaran Namboothiri@Mudhra on Dec 11th,2015
Sankaran Namboothiri was hailed in 90's as a prodigy and I am told that he did have a wider acceptance then. This is my second concert of his many years before i heard him once at MFAC. His voice timbre is unmistakably like KJ yesudas , there is distinct masculine richness which perhaps comes naturally to many from the malabar land
Start in hamsadhwani with a rare GNB krithi was bit rushed , one felt the swaras can be more neatly cut . The next in nalinakanthi did come out well but still the kutcheri start could have been better. Kamas alapana was brief and the MD krithi was well done , and from there the kutcheri was much better. I have personally not heard this rare krithi in KAnadA , his voice and timbre gave an intense KJY effect.
KapAlI in mohanam was main , his enunciation was not that crystal clear and for a rasika like me who hardly cares about lyrics, i felt certain phrases has few glaring mistake . THe preceding alapana had a good share of manodharmam and his swaras were slightly filmy. THe fast filler in mAlavi was brisk ,this krithi is always like that and his 2 rounds of cittaswaras had lovely coordination support from percussion.
THe RTP main in shanmughapriya was to me the best piece of his concert . Certainly he had his own on spot imagination. The alapana had nice brigas and I liked it . the taanam was without mrudangam and it was a touch and go affair . THe pracheena pallavi line was sung well but little more assertion in trikaalam would have been better . Swaras had nice dash of manodharmam and he sang with lovely support from violinist
In the tukkasda the bhimplas was perhaps sung as a tribute to ms amma but I liked the jagathjanani the most. Thillana was bit too loud. Varadarajan showed his class almost everywhere , in alapana return there is steadiness and sowkhyam which was a refreshing contrast . Incidentally the main vocalist was almost egging varadu to play long swara returns , varadu obliged and for every krithi the swara returns were very expansive. Both the percussionist were sarvalaghu champs and did up the concert . I just dont understand as to why there was two tanis that too in the same adi, one for kapali and other for rtp.
Few things that could have been better
--------------------------------------
1. Why was there no neraval in the whole concert? He has a tendency to speed with not much control.
2. Shankaran namboothiri is very KJY in voice quality and timbre which is good. But modulation is not that pronounced . At many places there is quite a bit of extra athattal (gesticulation).
3. His posture and at times he curls so much around the mike at times I am getting a feel that i am sitting in the side of the stage , possibly because of that i found bit aurally discomforting
Nice overall to see Mudhra starting . They had their share of worries as there was quite a bit of waterlogging near their sabha. They are putting all that behind and doing a great job.
Overall a good to very good concert for 2 hours and 45 minutes .

I attended this concert. Heard Sankaran Namboodiri after 20+ years. The concert was very good. Not as bad as has been pictured in the review.
Yes. There was no neraval prior to the pallavi. The choice of songs were like that. Instead of Natajanapalini, one weighty song could have been included. But artistes do have their own choice. Song no 4 was Kamalamba Naa chintateerchavamma in Kanada by Garbhapurivasar. This is more popular among Kerala vidwans. His voice with the timbre of KJY is the asset for him. The swaras and raga lapanas showed his vidwat and manodharmam. He is not getting enough opportunities in Chennai concert circuit nowadays.
