It was a very satisfying experience immersing in this recital of the Vidushi, this evening. Very competent accompaniment. Embar Kannan was a delight.A slightly flakey voice was well elided by the choice of compositions, their placement and the innate magnificence of the chosen compositions.

1. Her own varna speaks of the teacher in her- an ideal piece to be learnt by a beginner- a pentatonic raga, symmetric svara placement in the ettugada svaras & lastly if not the least ,the musician-craftsmanship - there was NO SGM usage. Everywhere it was littered with SMGM only as how Subbarama Dikshitar attests to in the raga's lakshana in the SSP. The varnam appeared to extol the dasavataras in sum.

2. Svaras for the Bilahari and the Hamir pieces were interestingly rendered at - 'Vanaja vadana' & 'sarasija bhava vala', respectively.

3. The rarely sung cittasvara for the Kedaragaula piece as found in the SSP was sung.

4. The Bhairavi piece was never overdone. A pithy/crisp alapana of Bhairavi was all that was offered. The masterpiece of the Trinitarian did the rest - no neraval or svaras were rendered , which would have been superfluous.

5. The Hamir Kalyani alapana was so beautiful and the kriti was rendered in the true Semmangudi school style. Reportedly the version was architected by Veena K S Narayanaswami at the behest of Semmangudi.

6. The conclusion with the Dikshitar classic 'Hastivadanaya' seems to be pattern in her concerts - she renders sometimes the Yehi Annapurne ( Punnagavarali) as well

PS: Pushing this out hot off the press, a rarity for me!
