Sangeetha Swaminathan @ NGS Mini 16-12

Post by sureshvv »

Sometimes the season can be nerve wrecking. You set out to see your favorite artiste after a sizable gap in time and your mind is full of expectations. But then, a small voice in the back of your head whispers as if to caution you. It tells you that a lot has changed since last year. It points out that the power of your reading glass has gone up a couple of notches. It reminds you how you keep dropping your wallet or your keys more frequently than ever. And it informs you to the ravages of time all around.

Accompanists

8. Tillana, Hameer, Pankajakshi ramana nee vara

Observations
------------------
1. All round brilliance from start to finish scorching all doubts (paridhi mun paniyai pola)
2. Rare kritis, Rare ragas, Scholarly presentation
3. Dharmavathi raga was elaborated methodically bringing out the raga swarupa even from the mandhra sthayee
3. Tribute to the school

So I walk out of the concert telling myself how much more I have learnt over the last year and how much more wisdom I have accumulated and am willing to share with the rest of the world.

I just googled to find that sandhyA dEvIm sAvitrIm vara gAyatrIm is a muthuswami dikshitar krithi in devakriya.
Tx for the review Suresh. Since Charsur also records the concerts and sells , artist have to work extra hard to present many unheard ones.

What do you mean by unlike her guru? Sudha Ragunathan has handled far more complex rtp's and talam.

This thread is about Sangeetha Swaminathan and restrict your convo about her concert.

hello Talkies, my comment is related to tribute to school... Sangeetha's style is more close to MLV than sudha... Did i tell t hat sudha didn't handle more complex RTPs? Don't put words into my mouth....

May be, you should hear more MLV's music.... if you need any help, let varsha know....

Actually in my humble opinion, the biggest contribution anyone makes to the field are their students & both MLV & Sudha have left a lasting legacy which i feel is unmatched.

Thank you. One of my "Chitraguptar" friends in the audience was wondering aloud if it was a Madurai G,S,Mani composition. He will be pleased with this clarification.

It is not in the raga Vardhini.

It is in the melakartha raga Ragavardhini.

Just a clarification.

I remember hearing it 2-3 years ago when Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi gave a vocal concert of her father's compositions.

I would think that SSI has probably left a bigger legacy followed by GNB, Brinda, and more recently, Lalgudi. Not sure Sudha has any other known disciples besides Sangeetha and Deepika.

Yes it is indeed by LGJ.
Interesting piece of trivia: this Ragavardhini composition was indirectly inspired by Illayaraja. Here is a speech during the book release of Lakshmi Devnath's biography on the maestro https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9LjgaII4ng

Agree partly. In SSI's case it may have skipped a generation, at least as far as the performance aspect is concerned. Also I excluded direct descendants from being counted as students.
