RTPs in December Season 2015

I was a late-comer this Season but have already been treated to some fine Music and lec-dems. The first RTP I heard was by Sriranjani at MA in Kharaharapriya-a fine alapana-maybe too long followed by Pallavi 'Velanai Siva Balanai Valli Lolanai Nee ninai maname diname' with ragamalika swaras. I am going to slip in Abhishek's concert though he sang no RTP. He sang some lovely rare Thyagaraja kritis and his poorvikalyani was like an RTP
Carnatica Brothers sang Kedaragowlai in Adhi 'Swamikki Sari Evvare-Chandra Vadanam Sri Krishna' with ragamalika swarams in Goulai-s
Then I heard the masterly Thodi 4-kalai Pallavi by Smt Seetha Narayanan- what a voice and what astounding grip Thanks Nick for the tip.
RaGa snag an RTP in Charukesi in Trimukhi Tisra Triputa (all the first beat of each tala angam are in tisram) Gayatri touched Pilu in Grahabedam. Done with their usual stamp of authority.
But, let me come to MA 23/12. RTP in Varamu by Dr Pantula Rama. The whole exercise was nearly 1 hour 15 mins or so with 10 mins of thani. It was in Khanda Triputa-Uttarangam in Chaturasra Tisram. The kanakku was there for those who wanted to hear but it was pure melody for ' ; Adharam Madhuram Gamanam Madhuram, Madhuradhipathe Rakilam Maduram' Enthati Kulukke in Kalyani was sublime and so was the viruttam for Venkatachala Nilayam. Top drawer stuff
Followed that Vocal concert by a superb violin duet by the Lalgudi Siblings. A brief RTP in Rasikapriya Chaturasram/Tisram - 'Sama Gana Rasikapriye Shive Mam Pahi' Highlight of the concert was some precise KS in Madhyamavati and an amazing Thodi alapana by LGJRK.

Sowmya's Devamanohari Rtp was set to misra Triputa talam.. It was nearly completed in 25 mins .. Yaruku than theriyum devamanoharan perumai.

Amrita Murali's Academy Rtp was brilliant.. Rtp was in khamas, Lalitha and sriranjani .. Unable to recollect the talam n edupu.. Thoroughly enjoyed her Rtp.

Dr. Rama announced the talam as khanda jati triputa with poorvangam in chatusram and uttarangam in chatusra tisram.

Not everybody will assume that the poorvangam was in chatusra nadai. So, a clarification from me.

Thnx Harimau for the clarification. During Season, you write these rushed reviews which probably only makes sense to you! I have also edited the Trimukhi talam-I realised I had written it wrong.

I see there is a separate thread for each concert which is probably the right way to do it. But since I have started this thread, RTP in Kalyani by K Gayathri @ MA on 24/12 definitely belongs here. She sang the Sharabanandana Thalam with absolute ease and was accompanied by her team with equal facility. Very talented youngster.

Nisha rajagopalan sang a brilliant kambodhi madyamavathi Pallavi.the way in which she glided from kambodhi to madyamavathi was amazing.if she continues like this she will climb the ladder very soon.

Sowmya's voice was not cooperating for the Margazhi Mahautsavam, but that was in stark contrast to her concert at BGS where she sang a beautifully sweet RTP in Desh!

Yesterday, the Hindu reported that Nithyasree Mahadevan's choice of RTP in Chakravakam evoked great interest. Her "nonchalant ease in elaborating the raga bore out her schooling".

Getting up late and dragging your butt to a concert at 10 am does not count as service in the cause of music!

At te same Narada Gana Sabha mini-hall, an RTP series has been going on for 4 days and will end on Dec 31. Sponsored by Narada Gana Sabha in association with Saraswathi Trust.

Today was Kalyani Ganesan on the veena. Raga was Sankarabharanam. Talam was Misra jati triputa talam, 2-kalai. Eduppu was at one-half after samam.

Smt Ganesan announced that in addition to doing the usual trikalam, she was planning to do tisram but then her husband asked her to do tisram also in three speeds and she was going to do her best.

Turned out to be an excellent RTP.

The incentive for showing up 8:30 is that the discourse by Kidambi Narayanan (?) ends around that time and you get prasadam. Today it was Pongal, piping hot.

I hope they will have sweet Pongal on alternate days!

So get your butts out of bed by 6 am and be at Narada Gana Sabha. If you are there at 7 am and attend the discourse, you get punyam. At 8:30 it is just Pongal!

pattama: Poorvangam 36 + 7 Arudhi +36 =79 Aksharas. Gayathri did explain the talam structure but I failed to make notes-had guru, laghu, drutham, anudrutham but also laghu varam, drutham varam etc. Just remembering the talam order seemed like a tall order. Then to do trikalam and all the manodharmam for it was very impressive. The pallavi was sung by Syama Shastri.

Yesterday, Lalgudi Anuradha Sridhar on the violin. Simhendramadhyamam, Tisra Jhampai, Misra nadai.

Today Revathi Sadasivam on the veena, Bhairavi, Khanda jati Triputa.

Of course those who are not chasing after name-brands do show up for these concerts. Respectable crowd of about 60-70 persons for each of these concerts.

Yes! By all means i was there !! it was 4 kalai chatusra rupakam pallavi (but based on tala angas he displayed, it was 8 kalai rupakam).. such a lovely, wish he continued with swaras.... and also with 1 kalai reduction.... waiting for commercial CD release... gem of a concert..

I'd like to get a perspective from the the boarders on the topic of RTPs.

During the season, except for the main concert most other concerts are about 2 hrs in duration? Do rasikas still expect a RTP within this time frame? You would requite 45 min atleast for the main piece and may be 35-40 min for a Pallavi to do justice. In a 2 hr concert there is much room to sing a RTP and most RTPs get crunched to about 20 min. Do people still look forward to the 20 min RTP which is almost like putting a tick saying yes i have rendered a pallavi?

Personally i would like to listen to a concert with a properly done main item rather than packing stuff to tight in order to squeeze a RTP in it.... thoughts welcome. Thanks

The thing about RTP is it is fairly free format and provides the license for some creative departures. In that sense, it is always interesting what people do with it and so I would like to see it even if squeezed to fit.
