Don't you hate it when...

Post by sureshvv »

Mild to severe annoyances at the concert venue (feel free to add your own):

1. When singers roll the "r" as if singing in English or Punjabi. Much abused word is "dharma" as if referring to the character from the 90s sitcom. Thankfully Chinmaya sisters singing it pleasantly in "sarva dharma paripalaya".

2. When as part of a lec-dem, attempt is made to dissect the personal life of a late artiste & questions such as "was she truly happy" are raised?

There are better terms to use than 'hate'. Let us discard this term from the dictionary - at least of music - CM.

My pet peeves:
1.people potter about especially the front rows
2.people play video games in concerts
3.people chat/make phone calls/receive calls with ring tones like Gayatri mantra/harivarasanam/endaro/vatapi/brahmamurari/suprabhatam/bhajagovindam/sai bhajan/jaijagadeesh...
4.SING ALONG...

Be careful... you might get trolled due to the sheer rage and overwhelming hatred some anonymous handles feel when they see you don't like something. Don't you just hate it when it happens?

No seriously, I'd say discuss this stuff in the lounge.

However, I find some handles provoking the trolls; and standing back to watch the fun. Don't know which is worse.

In a series of concerts during a day, I wish each artist would remember that there is another concert to come, that artists take time to sit on the stage, audience takes time to come in, go out, visit toilet, etc.

So, my don't you hate it when is, with another concert due at, say 4.30pm, the artist on stage signals, just one more, right? at 4.28pm. No! Not just one more... Time management is one of the vital skills they have to learn, along, perhaps, with the message that they have had their turn for the day,, and have to give way to the next, with time too spare

Don't you just hate it when the sound system fails?

Well... no, actually!

I spent just a few minutes in Sastri hall, the other day, en-route somewhere else and waiting for wife. After a short time, I realised that the mics were on the floor in front of the stage and the concert was unamplified. It was a huge improvement for the hall with the worst electronics/"engineer" in the city!

A good, much-needed seasonal thread. The word 'hate' in the dictionary being hateful, I'd use 'disgusted' for a change.

Humming along is the most disgusting for me. Unlike the cell and the hell surrounding it in a concert hall-- its ringing, singing, chanting, and their chatting into and around are at least temporary. But the humming goes on until the very end :( Used to be that in disgust, you could seek another seat. Not now--which has a positive note too, that CM is more popular now that another vantage seat is rare to come by? :)

Yes Nick. That 'one more?' gesture from the stage, the pakka vAdyams realigning themselves, that 'one more?' sprouting a tillAnA tail, then their dissembling--all eat up time. Time management only adds to their assets, they should realize...

Most annoying factors
1.All the doors in the auditorium kept open. This happens in Bangalore Gayana Samaja. The acoustic effects take a beating.People come and go out frequently.Music Academy Scores well in the acoustic aspects and doors are kept closed.
2. Exodous during Tani as if it is not part of the concert.
3.Chit chatting - very common.Mobile phones not in silent mode.People try to receive calls as if life is dependent on it.Sri VIJAYA SIVA made some observations as to what greets the artists on stage.
- they can see that other than music people are engrossed in checking msgs, mails or going thru web sites etc.
-People stealthily attempting to record
-According to him silently listening to music is absent. He even told the organisers not to praise him in speeches.
4 Some times people exhibit their vidwat by singing along.
5.Organisers trying to accomodate VIP's and asking you to move.

These are only somebut there are many more.

I wish organizers would make a bigger deal about mobile phones. May be take a couple of minutes to allow people to put their phone on silent mode & then hold it up as verification.

When you attend a concert with some exceptional pakkavadyam accompanists, don't recognize the artistes & there is no easy way to find out their names?

When the boy scouts at the academy prohibit discrete non-flash photography? Wonder if they are afraid it will become evidence of human rights violation the way they sell stage tickets? About 80 people yesterday.

This is a new thing: I always took such photos in the past.

Well, if the rule is for all, I'd have to think whether it is a good thing or not. At least there won't be people holding huge ipads over their heads!

Anyway, I'm not taking photos this year. My wife and I are refusing celebration of any kind, religious or secular, until our lives are back in order, thus, I may be getting to one or two concerts, but I'm not having a season.

And, by the way, don't you really hate it when you hear that an elderly musician has had her house flooded, with loss or damage to old and valuable veenas.

When the person sitting behind you asks you to sit a particular way as to not obstruct their view.

I have been known to request people not to lean across the gap, thus blocking the view, but otherwise... if life deals us a tall guy in the seat in front, well, that's life!

Not nice to invade another person's posture. it may be a consequence of all the people sitting ahead of them. Better move forward or just adjust.

We are short-changed, the shorties :) The front rows are better in this sense, but every time someone approaches to occupy the seats ahead of me, I look up to see how tall they are :( As Nick says, add to it that this person sits right in front of me, and constantly rotates his/her head (making it 15 heads), I get dejected.

The worst is the twosome which leans heads and aggrevates me with non-stop chatter.

Definitely you will cut a sorrow figure when the rasika sitting adjacent asking the raga of a different song is overheard by others. They will be under the impression that you have no knowledge of either of the ragas.

Hmm, I'm a head swayer I'm afraid. Side to side, with some reference, although perhaps neither obvious nor correct to the talam and feel of the words.

I don't know how many heads I equal
