Sanjay at Music Academy

Post by harimau »

I don't have tickets for this concert but it is easy to predict what the comments are going to be so I might as well get credit for opening this topic some 20 hours ahead of the actual event.

1. Unusual and out of this world varnam.
2. Something by Meesu Krishnaiyer.
3. Something else by Mazhavai Chidambara Bharathi
4. Tamil song by Muthuthandavar.
5. Vedanayakam Pillai song.
6. Gopalarishnan Krishna Gandhi song. Sorry, Bharathi not Gandhi.
RTP in Jogeswari. swarams in Priyadarshini, Jaijailalitha, Patdeep and Gorakh Kalyan.
Tamil bhajan in Gorakh Kalyan.
Vazhiya Senthamizh.

The crowd goes ape.

The souvenir would have the list, wouldn't it?

PS: would be a hoot if he were to read this and follow it to the T.

Do I sense some sarcasm @harimau? Numbers 6 & 7 sound mischievous. And of course the last phrase  :x

Never underestimate the resourcefulness of Team Harimau nor their ability to find their way into the auditorium by cornering, if necessary, some Sabha officials; the last has not been attempted yet, not even for the Duelling Abhangists.

Why don't you conduct your sociological research at the 6am line at the academy and make yourself useful by snaring me a ticket while you are at it?

Harimau,
How could you miss the words of the Pallavi:
Atishaya aanandam! Carrrom better than rum
At least ludo, drafts & Monopoly vilayaduvom!

Pardon all true rasikas for this attempt at humour.

Striped one,
While those who attend might gain some puNyA (for them, what you say is puN, aiyyA--it's hurting).

You hover around NGS and miss a thODi, and play your tune around this evening's MA!

Here I go, as in a mother's reprimand:
ENDA? nalla kachEri onRukku ellAraiyum varachonnAyEDA? ippOdu pAr, nI kurangA, avargaLA?
(look! You were so good to alert others about a good concert. But in this instance, are you the ape or is it others?)

Going to our region in tamizh nADu of yore: pazhayadu was amritA (scientists seem to zero in on it now?), but to eschew other kinds of fare in modern times--had you been born in our region--I'd say is a bit of an anachronism :(

I could happily go home on that blissful veena kutcheri (it deserves a separate thread instead of references in others) by Jayanthi Kumaresh yesterday. But I still have a couple on my wishlist-one of them is definitely Sanjay. Still can't source a ticket to his MA concert this evening- to hear the tup-tup artiste belt out some Meesu Krishnaiyyer, some Bharathi and oh that terrible manodharmam he offers. There is no accounting for taste, eh Harimau :)

In a flotilla--
My boat's better than your float
Is not the refrain--

How many there!
How different!
How good are many!
We wonder and delight--

That's what the season's about--jay hO!
Take your picks, however different
They all are, and ought be too--thus
Each good one a winner, victor-jay hO!

All musicians when they perform In music academy, they focus on intense carnatic ragas and avoid thamizh krithis in general(there may be just). They usually sing most krithis from trinity. Harimau songlist will be wrong in four hours time is my best guess.

Sankark
Half the musicians donot reveal the songs in the song list. Sanjay's page is blank in the souvenir.

Is it true that Tamizh kritis will not fit the bill as depicting carnatic ragas faithfully? Pasupathi's post about kalki's encomium on MS concert with all Tamizh songs is not for the connoisseur? Has not MA also distanced itself from the mindset that Tamizh songs are taboo? I am sure Sanjay will not carry any feeling that Tamizh song is to be avoided . He made bold to include his flair for Tamizh songs in his speech.

Varadarajan
Neyveli Venkatesh
KVG
swarna rethas (support)
Rahul? (sruti)

Kamalamba rakshatu maam, anandabhairavi

Nice malayamarutham alapana with a couple of long kaarvais & violin rounding off all the musical ideas neatly

Anumaaney samikku indha adayalam sollaiyya in rupakam, swaras at the pallavi. Brighas flowing more freely by the end.

Kaanada alapana

Started with a feather's touch and picked up pace with trademark tra ras & vroom ooms in tara sthayee. Brigha speed has caught up with the violin. Compact violin alapana. Sukhi evvaro kriti follows.

Extended vilamba kala swaras at pallavi line giving way to some brisk mel kala swaras ending in ga ga. Concluding with nice korvai & thani (starting at super speed) follows. Fast finger harakiri in the thani.

RTP in sankarabharanam. Forceful alapana steadily built up with long karvais & hitting the tara sthayee panchamam again & again like a young boy jumping to slap the heavy brass disc at the temple. Ending with the hint of nottu swaras, also emulated on the violin.

Electric tanam with both violin & vocal finishing in unison.

Seems like an 8 kalai pallavi in rupakam?

Please trash all harimau post from this thread.
That was a classical "madi" concert from sanjay.

Can't expect harimau to stoop to such low. I had a spare ticket until yesterday, didn't know harimau is this keen.

Back to concert, no tuptup, lollipop etc....a chaste kanada, and shankarabharanam, along with bonus malayamarutham

Pallavi tala, I thought it is chatusra rupakam, 4 Kalai, but based on tala Anga displayed, it looked like rupaka 8 Kalai..but, I am sure it was 4 Kalai and also sung in 2 Kalai later.

Or, was it a tala with 6 beat/count in 4 Kalai, not part of saptha tala ?

Virutham and a tamizh song in patdeep was engaging, and nice virutham in madhyamavati in karpagambal at end was lovely

Hey, I got two things right:

1) Patdeep
2) The crowd goes ape.

With that kind of a hit ratio, I should be sitting under a tree telling arul vaakku to people and I could be minting money!

Didn't that Tamil song say this is the land of arul vaakku?

I agree that this turned out to be a madi concert.

Perhaps there is no need in the future for tup-tups and dugu-dugus, now that the Sangeetha Kalanidhi has been awarded.

Dear harimau,
I'm not aware of what exactly tup-tup and dugu-dugu mean, although you have been using these for so long. It's one of those things that one is supposed to know, I guess.
But what I do know is Patdeep and I am curious as to why you object to it. It is a perfectly good tune and worthy of solid elaboration - Carnatic style. Sanjay is a few years ahead of his time, that is all.
You should try singing it. I have.

Point is do Carnatic musicians need to elaborate Hindustani ragas? Many artists today have gone this route or sing everything with a Hindustani twist. The boundaries are getting blurry.

Point is, so what if they do. I can accept that the boundary is blurry or whatever if this became the norm, rather than an occasional beautiful exception.
Finally it's only about how chaste and musical the rendition was.
Savita Narasimhan sang a lovely Hamirkalyani and wasn't that good.

Viruttam was in Bhimplas, Begada, Sindubhairavi and Patdeep.

Finished with a karpagambal viruttam in madhyamavati and then pavamana.

PS: My battery ran out at the viruttam.
