Re: Meaning of varnam
Here is my attempt , hope it helps :
( This is the first part. The "tama" in the Anupallavi shd be "tava". I have split some long vowels into the component words)
kimu - Why
parikhEdayasi - do you torment
mAm - me
paramAkula hrdayAm (who am) agitated in the heart
iha - here/now
ayi - Oh
taruNIjana vadanAmbuja taraNE ! - O Sun to the lotus-faces of young women!
mayi tava karuNA kimu nahi - Is your mercy not there towards me?
hA - Alas!
sajjana bharaNa - O sustainer of good people!
ambujanAbha - O Padmanabha
(svara sAhityam)
pAlita bhuvana samudaya - O Protector of the multitude of worlds!
ajahara harIDita - O one praised by Brahma, Shiva and Indra,
savinayam - with humility!
sattama - O most virtuous!
kari suruciragama - O one whose gait resembles an elephant's!
mahanIya - O praiseworthy one
!
ayi mAdhava - O husband of Lakshmi!
hrdayadhAmagam kuru mudam - create joy in my heart!
amarI jana sadA kalita - O one always meditated upon by the goddesses (wives of the Amaras=Devas )
vimata vidalana - O destroyer of foes!
anagha - O sinless one!
C1:
kimu - What
rItir ESA - is this conduct/behaviour
tE -of yours?
( is this cruel/indifferent behaviour of yours right or acceptable?)

I request Lakshman Sir or anyone else to check the lyrics. I am unable to understand some words and feel they may be misspelt.

Re: Meaning of varnam
Rajani, wonderful - both the excellent translation and the astute text emendation. I think we can learn more manuscriptology by trying to interpret 20th century books with Sanskrit written in Tamil or even nAgari script; than by trying to collate actual manuscripts in grantha or telugu characters!
Such a grand, wonderful varnam. It exemplifies the literary and musical skills of the composer.

Translations the sections that correspond to the edits
mAdhava! samayam'anidAnA'kalaya
anvaya- mAdhava! anidAna! Samayam (idam) Akalaya
mAdhava! - O lord of Lakshmi!
anidAna! – O causeless one!
Samayam (idam) – now is the time
Akalaya – take charge of me.
It can’t be idAnIm, since samayam idAnIm has a punarukti, and makes one of them redundant.
* * *
pada-nata-sudhApa! pari nija-vidhA'parimita
pada-nata-sudhApa – The nectar-quaffing deva-s bow to you
pari nija-vidhA'parimita – You are limitless in giving to your devotees.
Nija – one’s own
Pari – surrounding [devotees, entourage]
Vidha – bestowing boons
Aparimita – immeasurable
* * *
sA'dhIrA suma-shara-bAdhA parivrta-kAmA param'aham
anvaya - sA aham adhIrA suma-shara-bAdhA-parivRta-kAmA (asmi)
This woman of yours (I) am restless, engulfed in desire, struck by manmatha’s flowery darts.
sA aham – I*
adhIra – restless
suma-shara- manmatha of the flowery arrows
bAdhA – torment
parivRta-kamA – am enveloped in longing
sA aham is a classical way of referring to oneself, like the characters who refer to themselves as ‘ayam janaH’ in the Sanskrit plays, or the yogi who refers to herself as sO’ham.

nigama-vinuta tarasA'nupamakrpA-sharaNa! kAma-vitaraNa-para|| rItireSA etc..
nigama-vinuta – adored by the Vedas
tarasA – quickly, make haste
anupama - matchless
kRpA-sharana – repository of mercy [= kRpA-nidhi or krpa-sAgara]
kAma-vitarana-para - one intent on granting wishes.

Re: Meaning of varnam
Couldn't resist a postscript. Here goes..
The caraNa here is the extended 4 Avarta caraNa seen in several older varNa-s, often referred to as an ‘anubandha’. Several of the Sanskrit varna-s with the padmanabha mudrA have such an extended carana, whose first line alone is sung after the carana swaras, and the whole carana [aka anubandha] is sung at the end, dovetailing into the pallavi.
Many of svAti tirunAl’s varnam-s with the extended caraNa, have this special feature of inserting the rAga-mudrA in the caraNa – Bhairavi, aThAna, nIlAmbarI, ghaNTA, kAm(b)Odi , bhUpAla and this one.
Other varna-s, such as those in pUrNacandrikA and sAvEri, have the rAga-mudrA elsewhere in the text, and some, such as the madhyamAvati, suddhasAveri, begaDa and dhanyAsi varNa-s, do not have the rAga mudra.
Needless to say, they are all superlatively beautiful. I hope more people sing more of them, [It has been happening for a while now at Kuthiramalika and the Navaratri festival], and also hope more people interpret them in Abhinaya. [instead of resorting to some of those dreadful varna-s in vogue now]

Re: Meaning of varnam
Thanks so much for the details.
So here, in the literal context the naiyka is longing for padamanadha's love and attention?
Also, in the below line which word suggest 'Sun'
taruNIjana vadanAmbuja taraNE ! - O Sun to the lotus-faces of young women!
Thanks.

Re: Meaning of varnam
Nrithya - taraNi indeed is the word meaning sun. It becomes taraNe while addressing the person! ( Like Hari becomes Hare)
Also please note another change basedon Keerthi's corrections :
mahanIya-hrdaya-dhAmaga - O one who reaches the heart of the praiseworthy(pious) as your abode!
mayi mAdhava kuru mudam - O Madhava, Give me joy!

Thanks so much Rajaniji, Keerthiji, and rshankarji.
Will it be feasible to give the vAkyArtha (running meaning) for this pada varnam.
It will be very helpful for me to understand the complete picture and context.
Thanks once again.
