She used a rarely heard glide sangathi in the kambodhi kriti that sounded most wonderful. As if to prove that it was not a fluke she repeated it again each time she sang the line. Think I have heard this only once before when ending the raga alapana.

Would be grateful to anyone with more "fu" who can shed some light on this.

Suresh, are you talking about the dwelling on N3 in the SN,,P phrase? She lingers on the N3 longer than I've generally heard. I liked her way of singing it - thanks for the clip!

Me too. N3 is generally fleeting in kAmbOji, and I've mostly heard it right at the end of alapanais where the emphasis is often on the dhaivatam that is oscillated (SN3PD,,,S) as a way to conclude.

It has a fantastic effect. I heard something like this at a Gayathri Venkataraghavan concert at PS High school more than 5 years back (when she sang koniyadina) and only a fleeting glimpse once towards the end of the alapana. Never heard it from her or anyone else since. Sriranjani revels in it in this kriti and it is so fitting, Evokes a nice romantic feel for kambodhi.

The Vachaspati alapana had glimpses of western music in it.

Suresh, I just read this thread. Agree with you and Bilahari on the use of N3. That little extra lingering on N3 applied contextually to this song creates a good effect.

The spirited young singer has excited you all with this special prayOgam, and I see why. Still, have I not heard it in the past, in some good o...ld concerts? Just wondering...MKR and others the rescue...
