Utmost respect for Sri Ravikiran, but why this "will do it in 50 hours"? Is it for some sort of record or something?

Having lost out on Sangeeta Kalanidhi to Sanjay this year, Ravikiran is desperate to grab attention which he has been doing in various strange ways for long now. It would be good if he sticks to playing the gottuvadyam instead of indulging in all this drama which will only bring him more ridicule except perhaps from his die hard disciples and fans.

I am keen to know the results of the session, with perhaps some audio links to the samples of the tuned verses duly sung.
Why attribute motives for any creative exercise? Especially when someone takes up the task in broad public view, with some huge time constraints, the exercise cannot be trivialised.

I noticed that some of this will be presented at The Hindu lit fest over the weekend. Looking forward to hearing this.

Bit unfair. Sanjay got it and you are happy, fine and may you listen to the phenomenon for the whole of this centuryvilomachapu wrote:Having lost out on Sangeeta Kalanidhi to Sanjay this year, Ravikiran is desperate to grab attention which he has been doing in various strange ways for long now. I am neither a student or die-hard fan of Sanjay or Ravikiran. Looks like you are, that you are putting down another artist to big up yours

Ragas thus far include rare melakartas like Sucharitra, Gangeyabhooshani, Dhenuka and janyams like Shahana, Dwijayavanti, Devamanohari, Bhoopalam, Janaranjani, etc and the day ended in lots of Hindustani ragas as well.

Having won accolades since the age of two, and that too, willy-nilly, he has absolutely no need to be desperate. I know for a fact that he draws inspiration from greats across disciplines (magic, cricket, science, mathematics, to name a few), and tries to outdo himself all the time. He competes with himself, and nobody else. I distinctly remember him mentioning how inspired he is by divine feats such as Vedanta Desikan's Paduka Sahasrams that were supposedly composed in a fraction of a night! In a recent Mrdangam Arangetram in Chennai, Neyveli Sir - the Chief Guest, remarked in front of everybody that great vidwans and vidushis have given him the SK title long long ago and that, he is beyond all these awards. Shri. Ravikiran, with due respect to everybody, has been acknowledged as a genius long before many of these recent awardees even appeared in the CM scene. For consistent contributors like him who neither rest on their laurels or lineage, it is quite natural to want to increase the bar all the time. I am sure this will serve as an inspiration to those in CM and other fields.vilomachapu wrote:Having lost out on Sangeeta Kalanidhi to Sanjay this year, Ravikiran is desperate to grab attention which he has been doing in various strange ways for long now. The classicism dripping in his Chitraveena renditions, his erudite lecdems where he shares his knowledge so readily with others, the enthusiasm with which he has unearthed OVK's compositions, the beauty of his compositions, the collaboration with the best of the best in other systems of music, the depth of his knowledge in Carnatic music theory and practice, the disciples he has trained and continues to inspire in the aesthetics of music and the passion for Carnatic music that he has - For all this the Sangeeta Kalanidhi appears a very small title for him.vilomachapu wrote:Having lost out on Sangeeta Kalanidhi to Sanjay this year, Ravikiran is desperate to grab attention which he has been doing in various strange ways for long now. I should point out that V.S.Gomatishankara Iyer and also Mayuram Vishvanatha Shastri have tuned tirukkuraL verses, the former in the form of varANAs and the latter in the form of Kirtanas.

MMD used to include Tirukurals in his concerts. Outstanding composer that he was, did he tune them himself or did he sing the ones tuned by the persons mentioned by Sri Lakshman?
Kudos to RK for tuning all the Kurals. It will be a great contribution to CM.

In the endless list of human traits--alas, two negative ones keep surfacing as we discuss music which is supposed to elevate our souls.
One: comparing artistes in order to put one of them down.
Two: even worse...berating a performer, forgetting his/her merits, only because of our own personal reasons keep angering us.
Anyhow, Ravikiran stands alone. He needn't and can't be compared to anyone at all--not even Mandolin Srinivas, a marvel in his own special way.
The latest SK was grilled the past half a year, and we carried on as in a dramatic serial--those who were vitriolic and some of us fighting against it. Was it all necessary?
We have one storehouse of music in Ravikiran. A stand-alone artiste he is too. His search goes on. His findings, and what he creates as a result adds to the bounty of CM.
Politics of the political kind rules, casts a shadow on our existence, true. Do we rally need to resort to its ways in our living with the music we all love?

Lakshman and Kunthalavarali,
Yes, as can be expected, tirukkuraL has long fascinated lyric-minded artistes to sing them in their concerts. A few even went on to explain the meaning in a song, with the couplet as pallavi lines. In this centenary year of Prof. V.V.Sadagopan, a CD of his tiukkuRaL kIrthanais was released early in the year.
