VKV/Cienu: Watched the bulk of the program. I was very much impressed with the whole thing.
Speeches: As it was in the morning our time and I had some inevitable errands (like--taking grandkids to school!!!!)--so I could catch opening remarks of VVS and missed VKV's completely. But VKV take heart--Nirmala my wife the harshest critic in assessing speeches gave both you and VVS an A plus( to understand what is the benchmark she uses I invariably get a D for both my speeches and writings!!!!.
She is better capturing the gist of any talk but based on what she described to me in detail--more than my pea-sized brain can handle, here is WHAT she felt about the talks . VVS special mention of Kadayanallur Venkatraman--his sincerity, humility, painstaking efforts to compose the tunes and teach despite the long trek from Perambur to Kotturpuram or Valluvar Kottam. VVS choice of words,no bombast,no flaunting his connections and intimacy with artistes etc. Crisp and solemn for the occasion. I may have missed some of her narration. After it is in You Tube I will comment!!.
Next VKV--she was all praise for VKV's talk--expounding what MS Amma's greatness was outside of her singing and his own experiences of being intimate with the family, he also "rued" and lamented--not in the usual VKV's provocative way--but sincerely regretted how great Institutions(whose very success today depended on MS Amma;s largesse and without hurting or finger-pointing at instituitons(he did not absolve himself) should have commemorated MS Amma's memory better. She also mentioned VKV's comments on Sruthi--from a scientific point of view as well as aesthetic point of view and what made MS Amma great. (I got goose bumps when my wife described some of the comments. I thought to myself how lucky VKV and myself are in having known such a great human being and watching her from the closest quarters over 50 years. I can speak for myself--I have to thank my late mother for cultivating the association and bond for over 60 years--personally I do not have the remotest credentials to merit the association--Honesty is better than modesty!!!
Now for the piece-de resistance. Aishwarya's concert.
It was an excellent concert --both myself and Nirmala were amazed at how fast she has improved. The repertoire of songs--vintage MS Amma's--the lalitha alapana, the Annamacharya pieces--Kamas,shanmughapriya--were all rendered with sensitivity(it is amazing how from hearsay she has imbibed the best of her Great Grandmother--Radha has done an awesome job to train her in the true spirit of the MS Amma Bani--the voice was pleasing and the sruthi suddham was perfect. As Nirmala put it, to mount the stage as MS Amma's Great Granddaughter(with all the expectations associated with it) itself is a herculean task, Even the pleasing appreciative nods at Narmada for her execution-- were reminiscent of MS Amma. Aishwarya's stage persona matched Radha 's and MS Amma's--no fuss. At every step it was evident Aishwarya was coached superbly by Radha.( Cienu, I was eagerly awaiting the meteoric flash sangathis in the Kamas and Shanmughapriya pieces that Radha used to launch, but Aishwarya downplayed it in deference to her mother-in-law!!!! ). Aishwarya will go places with her passion, sincerity and wariness of being the torch-bearer of the MSS tradition--not an easy legacy to inherit and transmit.
NARMADA-- She lent excellent support--never overshadowing the vocalist --despite her own stature in the CM world--her choice of the Raga s--
the Hindusthani ones and her deep insights into how MS Amma had handled these showed Narmada's perceptiveness and discriminating sense. her own proficiency in both the systems--assiduosly cultivated and refined--building on her Dad's brilliance--all came out very well throughout
the concert--the Table and Mridangam ensemble was quite pleasing without the pyrotechnics that one witnesses from the percussionists these days!!!.
My only regret was that despite the publicity and planning that must have gone not it--the crowd was sparse--perhaps Chennaites have difficulty- especially if they are working. But what about my fellow silver-haired friends--what was their excuse--I did not even see some of the Raga Sudha "regulars"(who generally show up for such events!).
Kudos to VKV,Cienu,VVS and others involved in the effort.

Thank you Ramesh Mama ( & Nirmala Mami) for your appreciation and kind words.
Appreciate the efforts of Sri VKV and Dr Narmadha in making the event memorable.
Honoring the son of Kadayanallur Venkataraman, I am sure would have made my Grandmother, some where in the heavens, so happy.!
Was delighted to see Rasikas - Sri Nageswaran and wife, Nick (though for a short while), Pattamaa and daughter , Sri TVG and his family.

Re: JAN 15 5:30-9P.M. MS CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS SASTRY HALL MYLAPORE
VKV; Thanks for your kind comments. After one of MSAmma's concerts in Bombay in the Mid Sixties,at the end of the concert I gushed out to Mami and said the Sankarabharanam was awesome!! Despite being "mobbed" by admirers around Mami , promptly quipped:Besh!! Besh!! Vasishtar Vayal Brahmarishi--apparently I had never publicly complimented her before on her concerts--needless to say to this day I feel so humbled by that Grace and Culture which that GREAT LADY exuded every moment of her life--on stage as well as offstage.
CIENU: I forgot to add how poised and dignified Aish presented herself on the stage--the right amount of reverence and sincerity and self-confidence--I am awestruck as to how much she imbibed Patti's qualities on stage when she may not have had the opportunity to watch Patti in her halcyon days!! YES!! Patti would have been very proud not only of Aish but also of how your Mom trained her and vicariously enjoying Aish's solo performances --which she (your Mom never had the opportunity to perform). Convey Nirmala's and my appreciation to your Mom.
NARMADAJI: I am so glad that you are carrying the family torch--brightening it at every available opportunity. All the hard work that I know your family is capable of putting you thro is paying off now.THIS IS MEANT FOR YOUR STUDENTS AND I HOPE THEY REALISE WHAT A PRIVILEGE THEY HAVE AND WHAT A HUGE BURDEN THEY CARRY IN ENSURING THAT THE TRADITION IS UPHELD TO THE SAME HIGH STANDARDS. To quote Brindamma "NANGAL ELLORUM BANIKKU ENRU USIRAYE VIDUVOM". I do not want your students to "lose" their lives but learn and play as if their lives depended upon doing justice to the School! I am sure you would feel that is the greatest Guru Dakshinai you can expect from them!!!!!
May you continue to enthrall us all and May God give you the strength to do so!!!

Ramesh,
You say it best! Your lifetime connection with the family makes it so. It also reflects the feelings of us rasikAs.
Yes, Aishwarya's poise and self-confidence and above all, her dedication is much more evident now. It makes friends and rasikAs proud and happy.
Dr. Narmada is a super example of an artiste who is so intent upon keeping her family tradition going--an inspiration to Aishwarya. That hard work in keeping the heritage of the family becomes the focus and a joy too...

Sorry my visit was so short. In the space of time, I met so many old friends!
