The music offered by Gayathri Venkataraghavan for Chennai Online at Ragha Sudha Hall on 13th dec 2006 was one where words could only be.a poor substitute for the experience enjoyed.

The ambience was excellent. The hall was nearly full. The amplification was soothing and almost perfect. The accompanying artistes Smt Padma Shankar and Sri Ganapathiraman were known for their perceptive and aesthetic support.

I am only giving the dominant impressions which linger in the memory, a day after the concert..

The first raga essay in Sriranjani and the krithi Brochavarevere was rendered in the usual way with sarvalaghu swaras. One settled down in anticipation of a good concert.

What followed was a Khamas of stunning beauty reminding one of the Lakshya sangeetham of Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer. The Swathi thirunal kriti Palaya mam was offered with elan. From then on there was no stopping the excellent flow of music reminding one of the gentle murmer of a brook, now, the sound of gushing waters and the stately flow of a mighty river at other times.. Long sonorous karvais and soothing sancharas in the lower registers marked the elaboration of the ragas. Purvikalyani and Bhairavi. Their beauty was lovingly portrayed . The swanubhava of the artiste was infectious that the rasikas spontaneously responded with sounds of Aha, Oh and Tsu Tsu. In between Dhanyasi was elaborated in the form of a Pasuram from Nalayira divya prabandham.

Ekamranatham (Purvikalyani) of Dikshitar with the soaring neraval at Omkara rupam Sivam, and Sri Lalithe, the resplendent creation of Annasami Sastri (Bhairavi) with sensitive elaborationat Neelabda Dala Lochane heightened the aesthetic values of classicism. Balakrshnan padamalar (Dhanyasi) of Sivan was moving. The Kritis seemed to be Gayathriâ€

Good to hear that she sang 'bAla krishnan pAda malar'. I have not heard anyone sing it except for KVN--and he sang it beautifully...

Review of the same concert in chennaionline

Gayathri casts a spell Review

Gayathri Venkatraghavan’s varnam in Begada at the Chennaionline Music and Dance Festival 2006 was followed by a kriti in Sriranjani, ‘Broche Vaarevare’. A torrent of swaras revealed her musical ingenuity.

In the following piece in Khamas, ‘Paliyamam’, Gayathri’s essay of the raga was vibrant. The neraval of ‘Neeraja Samacharana’ was full of bhava.

She brought out the nitty gritty of the raga Poorvi Kalyani in her splendid alapana. ‘Ekambara Nadham’, a composition of Muthuswamy Dikshitar had the audience in raptures. Gayathri took the audience to Mount Kailash for a while.

Her vritham in Dhanyasi and her subsequent rendition of ‘Balakrishnan Paadhamalar’ by Papanasam Sivan had strains of spirituality. ‘Saaramaina Maatta’ in Behaag was brimming with melody.

Gayathri mesmerised the audience with her ‘Jo Atchudanada’ in Kapi. It sounded like a lullaby.

Padma Shankar, the violinist, was at her best, and the picturisation of the raga brought out her remarkable talent. B Ganapathyram on the Mridangam is an artiste of rare genre. He was able to translate his feelings into sounds.

The rasikas were unable to come out of the spell cast by Gayathri and her team.

Heh heh, Maybe rasikas.org should take a cue and get some revenue from ads inserted in the middle of posts!
