What is 'kattai' called in Telugu/Kannada/Malayalam/other languages?

Post by raguanu »

Shruti numbers are called kattais in Tamil, as in 1 kattai shruti, 5 kattai shruti, etc.
  1. What's the equivalent term in other languages?
  2. Is the word kattai itself generally understood in music circles, students and professionals alike, irrespective of region/language?
I've also noticed the word is completely omitted sometimes-- Simply 1 shruti or shruti 5-and-a-half.

How do you practically use this/equivalent term? Could you give me some examples?

Kannada "mane" pronounced to rhyme with Sanskrit "jane"
It means house (and in the same sense as katte or kattai ie step or platform)

I may be stating the obvious, but the kattai refers to the harmonium keys/buttons. So in other languages, whatever the same keys are called would be the closest equivalent. Whether it is called that for referring to the sruthi is an interesting question.

Sachi, so in common use, is it called 1.5 mane, 5 mane etc?
