Padma Awards 2016

Post by Sundara Rajan »

By a quick perusal of the list of awardees I do not notice any Carnatic musician.
Did I miss any in the list ?
Grija Devi seems to be the only Hindustani vocalist awarded a Padma Vibhushan. Should they have made such awards to late Dayananda Saraswathi and current Sri Sri Ravishankar ?! Why not also to Vivekananda,Adi Sankara or Ramanuja ?

I don't know about Carnatic music awardees.

But the works done by Aarsha Vidya Kendra, Sri Sri AOL and Chinmaya Mission are extremely noteworthy. It is high time such work is recognised at the national level. And these efforts, although rooted in Indian culture, are benefitting people all over the world and across languages and religions.

Dr.Shantha, for her unbelievable dedication and tireless work at the Cancer Institute is honored by the award--the sister of Nobel Laureate Chandrasekhar Subramanian and Vidya Shankar.

Other Hindustani artistes in the list this year include Tulsidas Borkar (harmonium) and vocalist Soma Ghosh. There is also an award winner, M Venkatesh Kumar described as a folk artiste in a list I saw somewhere. I wonder if that is a typo, as that is the exact same name as a fabulous Hindustani vocalist (who sang at the Academy this last season).

Dancers Yamini Krishnamurthy and Pratibha Prahalad also feature in the list.

Sanjay "great "Subramaniam is a very bad omission. I think he is not given because he is an atheist

Although Sanjay is quite popular in carnatic circles, he may not be well known outside this belt for he doesn't fool with so called fusion, jugalbandhi etc.
His religious belief/non belief may not be a factor. I don't think that he is an atheist either !
The recommendations for these awards mostly originate from state governments.
Tamil Nadu government is apathetic. Even the deserving one who sang in praise of Amma has been denied Bharat Ratna !

Zero Padma awards for CM - frankly it is a good thing which indicates that they don't know how to play politics. Well KVN didn't get more than a Padma Sri IIRC, or Nedunuri none(?), R Vedavalli none(?). I think some of them who did get - Sudha, TVS, PSN, Lalgudi, MSG (all Padma Bushans), Balamurali (Padma Vibushan?), as are DKP, SSI and UKS Am thrilled about Shanta who may not be known amongst the movers and shakers....

KVN, Palghat Raghu & MD Ramanathan got Padma Sri based on the recommendation of Kerala Govt & not TN govt.Dr V K Narayana Menon had a role in getting their nomination approved. To get Padma awards State Govt must nominate for centre to consider the candidate. The year TVS,PSN,TNS & few others got Padma awards BJP govt could influence JJ. Infact local BJP were close to Amma for a short period & even convinced her to ban conversion & take all temple elephants to Ooty for 3 months etc etc. Infact BJP TN unit requested JJ to send maximum names & probably Mr Gopalaswamy Secretary to Home Minister then must have played some role. You can be assured TN Govt be it DMK or AIDMK will not recommend any Brahmin Carnatic Muscian for Padma awards. Sangita Kalanidhi is the only hope.

I think apart from music there is also state quota . With most of the carnatic musicians being based out of TN, with others getting it from other fields from TN , TN based musicians will lose out.But It is really unfortunate not even one CM musician is awarded . Rajinikanath has got the same award of PadmaVibushan which UKS already got :P (hooray maestro UKS mama , best wishes towards bharatratna in the future) . Maharashtra and delhi have the lions share- proximity to political connections .

There is no logic in awarding posthumously. This is a political gimmick. The awards are biased towards Delhi - only Hindustani Music is recognised.
The southern governments are not putting much efforts for the cause of Carnatic Musicians./

HNB
The posthumous award to Swami Dayananda Saraswati could have been decided before his demise in Sept. 2015.

Awarding titles to people long dead is an obvious appeasement tactic.

You're very right about southern state governments. An old Sanskrit scholar from Tamil Nadu who headed the Tirupati university has received the Padma award. I wonder who espoused his case!? Maybe just Modi.

After Ajay Devgan and Priyanka Chopra, now the snake from the movie Nagina wins Padma Shri award
“I never work for any award or appreciation. ‘Performance of prescribed duties without attachment to results’ has always been the mantra of my life; however, it feels good to be recognized for my work.”

Yes- I agree with the general sentiment here! Venkatesh Kumar (the great vocalist) and SL Bhyrappa (the great writer) are given a padmasri. Makes these look so dubious

Folks. If ANUPAM KHER can get an award for acting, there is no need to debate the merits of the choices

The less said about rajnikanth , the better. Let us focus on the kalanidhi :)

Let us focus on the kalanidhi
How better is the 'kalanidhi'. Full of politics and intrigue right from the 1940s itself, the institution of MA itself was misused by the likes of Semmangudi to push their agenda, their own favourites and deny recognition and even concert opportunities for many deserving vidvans. An award that has bypassed the likes of TNR, Mali, Needamangalam, Valangaiman, Pazhani, MDR, Lalgudi, Somu and many others, does it have any prestige anymore.

The award redeemed itself to a certain extent when AKC and Valayapatti were awarded. Again it slipped into the influence/recommendations mode. It has again redeemed itself to a certain extent by awarding Sanjay. This cn be kept up only if they award Vinayakram, Karaikudi Mani and VVS in the succeeding years.
