Suryaprakash @ Asthika Samajam Tiruvanmiyur 27-01

Post by sureshvv »

Suryaprakash accompanied by MAS & Sumesh Narayanan gave a filling all Thyagaraja concert performance with 5 raga alapanas.

Song list

1. Seethapathi, khamas
2. Pantuvarali, Raghuvara
3. Devagandhari, Seetharava
3. Malavasri, T
4. Bantureethi kolu, Hamsanadam
5. Mukhari, Entani ne
6. Mohanam, Mohana rama

Voice was in fine shape & the concert did not sag even for a moment in spite of the late start. Hard to pick any one item as outstanding since they were all presented with great virtuosity. Malavasri alap was new & intriguing to me.

Suresh,
Sounds like a typical Suryaprakash concert: in great voice, jilu jiluppu and bhAvam-laden singing from beginning to end ...

Haven't heard him even once this season since we did not make it to Chennai :(

Is it possible to hear that mAlavaSri?

Sorry arasi.. did not make a recording.

Malavasri is interesting. Sounds a bit like a plain jane Jayantasena without the curves (kampita gamaka?). But according to book it has more vakra prayogas while the latter is a more orderly.

#2 Arasi madam.., MMI used to sing "Evaru unnaru brova" in the raga 'Maalavasri', and should be available in one of his concert recordings.
I guess Suryaprakash sang this one.

I think Devagandhari should read as Seetavara than Seetarava?

 Purist, I would have either dropped the "madam" in the post, or said "MMI sir" if I started my post that way..but it's your post, not mine. I'm not sure if arasi has just given up mentioning that or no longer notices it though. :P

Vocalist,
Let's say I'm getting philosophical about it--after years of trying to dissuade people from adding madam to my name. Notice, I do, but then try to ignore :(

Purist,
Thanks for letting me know. Hope I get to hear the MMI version. If Suryaprakash sings it again
at Nageswaran's place, we can all hear it soon...

Thanks, Varsha :)

A kAnaDa like start but becomes busy afterwards. Will take some more hearings for me to like it even more. Some unheard rAgAs have instant appeal. This one is in the cultivated taste category for me...

Thanks Varsha. Nice 11 minute alap from Neduneri. It appears that the raga used to be more in vogue before (No new compositions but quite a few from trinity).

In the case of ghazals I have found that the ones without the instant appeal and that take longer to appreciate stay longer in your mind.
