I think Sanjay Subramanian is singing in Chennai after a long gap; the last concert, if I am correct, being at Sri Krishna Gana Sabha in early September this year. I had been longing to hear him live ever since coming to Chennai but hadn't got a chance as he was busy giving concerts outside India.

Sanjay always delivers and today's concert was no exception. He seemed to be in full form from the word go. anudinamunu was so beautifully sung. The sangatis for the pallavi line themselves were so beautiful. bhairavi raga alapana was crisp and so well executed. Sanjay's rendition of ennadu jUtunO in this concert is the best I have heard till now. The kEdAragOwLa alapana and kriti were also very well sung. The effect got from the pause given at the end of anupallavi in this kriti and the subsequent start of the charanam (satadrutu pUjita) was a very good one. However, the kalpana swaram almost abruptly ended. Use of a korvai would have provided a better ending but might have had the effect of compromising on the melody, the raga being kEdAragOwLa.

If Sanjay was awesome, so were all the other artists on stage, especially Sri Varadarajan on the violin. The taniavartanam was played in chatusra and kanda nadais. Sri K.V. Gopalakrishnan was able to reproduce the kuraippus played by Sri Arun Prakash very well.

Towards the end of the concert, Sanjay sang a lot of his usual thukkada pieces. The post taniavartanam portion of the concert was an extended one consisting primarily of viruttams and thukkadAs and it just left many in the audience (well, at least a group of people sitting to my left) wondering if a ragam tanam pallavi would have provided a fitting finale.

I regret having to prick the superlative bubble created by 'ram', but I honestly feel this concert was just average. Sure, Sanjay put on a great show for the audience and earned some applause, but in terms of musical content there was nothing quite extraordinary. Begada and Bhairavi were good but I feel the Kedaragowla was quite mediocre, both the alapana and the swara section where he rambled at certain points and then abruptly ended as 'ram' noted. 'Parengum Parttalum' was all sound & fury, completely missing the spirit of the song that the late MVI used to capture in his masterly renditions. Sanjay is an artiste I immensely respect. He is capable of much better music than last night's provided he cuts down on the theatrics! BTW, one noteworthy point was the good anticipation shown by Arun Prakash (probably a result of accompanying Sanjay several times), resulting in some deft touches that embellished the songs.

I'm intrigued by item 8...wish I could've heard it. I remember someone used to always rave about Sanjay's kapi viruthams.

aren't there any other krithis in kedAragowla? Saraguna Palimpa again.....looks like a detailed concert tho, chennai relly must start allowing for 4 hour concerts...else RTP's will be a thing of the past....

perhaps, I must rethink, and be careful what I wish for...if RTP's r allowed on a consistent basis, it's only a matter of time before saveri, purvikalyani, sahana and Mayamalavagowlai are attacked by some of our thillana shrieking "versatile" artists.......pitter patter indeed :)

Unfortunately, I'm with rasam wrt to that part of your post mahesh3. Huh????

A tad bit hypocritical to talk about repetitive main pieces tho...if you were the same mahesh3 at the BBoard last year...

SS Music channel (Live and Archives) is available to NumTV subscribers. Has anyone spotted this program on live or the archives section. What time is it shown on live tv and what heading is it available as, under the archives?

TIA
