Rama Ravi & Nandita Ravi, Dr. Hemalatha, Tanjore Kumar
Music Academy, Dec. 16th, 10 am

(Partial list... I reached there late, just as she was starting the purvikalyani kriti)
ekkalattilum - purvikalyani (I believe there was an alapana, N, S) - tiruvarur ramaswamy
sujana jeevana - khamas - tyagaraja
kalayami raghuramam - begada (r, s) - swati
ninnadanela - kannada - tyagaraja
raksha bettare - bhairavi (r, n, s, t) - tyagaraja
meragadu (javali) - atana - chinnaiah
manini (padam - start from anupallavi "maname bhushanamu") - shankarabharanam - kshetrajna
saramaina - behag - swati
vazhi maraittirukkude - nattakurinji - gkb
arumarundoru - mohanam - muttutandavar

I feel bad that I missed the first few pieces, including what should have been a superb alapana of purvikalyani. Rama mami's concert, as always, was deeply classical and chaste - one feels incompetent to comment. The padam, javali and vazhi maraittirukkude were all vintage Dhanam school uruppadis, rendered with faithful adherence to that unique pathantara.

On the flip side, the MA sound system was abysmal... there was a perceptible lack of balance of the mics.

I was late too...very late in fact - only got in when Rakshabettare but it was class - so many juicy sangathis...the tukkada section was one in name only - for none of the pieces could really be called light.

There is something unique about veena dhanammal and her bAni,which is always slipping me, because I don't hear it too often. But unfortunately I am very restricted to Smt Sowmya who with her reportoire always impresses me .

Can you guide me if there is any exclusive or rather more focussed concert featuring padam/javali. Any artist whether junior or super senior is fine for me . I just want to form my own personal opinion .

Choice is yours whether you want to send a personal mail or a reply to this thread.

rajesh, among current popular singers, Sowmya is probably the best repository of padams/javalis, she being a direct disciple of Muktamma. You could also listen to more of Rama Ravi. Other than these two, there are several direct disciples of Brindamma... there was a Hindu feature a few months back on padam/javali exponents. Someone can dig that up... the author was Gowri Ramnarayan.

If you want to listen to the motherlode itself, you might want to dig up one of the priceless Brinda-Mukta concerts, such as one Academy concert that is packed with padams & javalis. Coolkarni should be able to give us the details. Among commercial releases, the best I've seen is a live recording of Muktamma with Sowmya released by Carnatica (titled simply as 'Padams & Javalis', I think it's avbl from their website)... I was blown away by a Kambhoji javali in that CD. Try to recognize the subtle nuances of each raga, the way they handle certain pidis. Hard to explain in words, you have to let it grow on you by repeated listening! Enjoy...

PS - To get a flavor of how padams & javalis are related to dance, go to one of the lec-dems of someone like Nirmala Ramachandran. I missed the one at Nungambakkam a couple of days back, I think there is another one coming up on 29th at NGS.

Rajesh/Kamavardhini,

There is a recording of Smt T Mukta (vocal support by Kiranavali & accompanied by Ravikiran and Manoj Siva) from Cleveland a few years ago. I had the pleasure of attending this concert. The entire kutcheri is available at http://www.sangeethapriya.org/Downloads ... uktha.html

This is a classic showcase of the Dhanammal bani, although the songs are not exclusively padams/javalis. Please keep in mind that Mukthamma was 80+ when this was recorded.

A nice set of Kshetrayya's compositions sung by Brinda-Mukta can be found at: http://www.sangeethapriya.org/Downloads/BM/index.html

There are also instrumental renditions of some of these padams by T Viswanathan that you can get in commercial recordings.
