A very nice concert - lively from start to finish. Highlights for me were the mohanam alapana by Shri Shashikiran and the tani. Rajna is a mridangist to watch out for - she plays wonderfully well!

And here's a pic I took:

I missed this concert :( .... had made up my mind in the morning to attend this one especially to listen to Rajna Swaminathan play but then couldn't stop my feet from proceeding towards the TMK and Sanjay concerts. Hope to attend Rajna's other concerts at Raga Sudha Hall (and other places) this season.

I've recorded the first hour of the concert on my mp3 player/recorder. Will upload it if I get the time.

mri_fan,
There are some longer audio clips from Summer 2006 of Carnatica Brothers being accompanied by Rajna in her website, <www.rajnaswaminathan.com>.

Is it correct to record the concert in a MP3 recorder? While the quality is not likely to be good, is it still not a breach of faith? Most organizers and artists do not want recording by anyone and everyone.

Technology can sometimes be a hindrance.

Thank you very much for the clips. I was watching some of Rajna's clinic at PASIC with her father. I didn't realize that her father was mridangam player as well, although it helps explain her quick rise. If I could offer a suggestion though, I would like to suggest that Rajna avoid commenting ot large audiences on complicated issues such as gender roles in India until she has a bit more maturity and wisdom behind her. One troubling aspect was that her father, who sat next to her during the entire time, has played for musicians that refuse to have female accompaniment, such as Tirchur Ramachandran. I just find it a little hypocritical for her father to publicly represent the entire carnatic community while asking deep rhetorical questions about why there aren't more female mridangists, while he himself plays for musicians who refuse to have females on stage. I know for a fact that Tirchur Ramachandran has refused to perform when the only violinist available was female (and a very well-known one at that).

I'm sure Rajna will one day have many interesting things to say about the role of women in carnatic percussion, but as a 15 year old, it's pretty evident from watching the video that she has little to contribute to the discussions of Gender roles in carnatic music, except to say that she is a female percussionist. Allow her more experience and education on these complex ideas before you parade her in front of everyone in such a role.

I made a point to see several of Rajna's concerts this year, and she is developing into an excellent mridangam player. She seems to enjoy what she's doing, and I highly respect that.

Good luck to you all.

Ms. Swaminathan,

I wasn't sure of you were aware, but I thought I might try to point you towards the Vidwans section, where we have some excellent UKS video clips that I'm sure your daughter would enjoy
