I would probably rate this along with the TNS concert at Ramarao Kala Mantap as the best concert I have heard so far in the season this year. This was the last of the four concerts I attended on Sunday and it made my day as it was undoubtedly the best of the lot. I have always come away happy and satisfied from Sri Sanjay's concerts and Sunday was no exception. The main credit for making the concert excellent goes to Sri Sanjay and Sri Nagai Muralidharan. The gOwLa and kAnaDA alapanas done by both were masterpieces. The ragam tAnam pallavi was classic stuff and Sri Nagai Muralidharan was so precise in his replies be it during the kalpana swarams or whenever Sri Sanjay did a tisram.

Sri Guruvayur Dorai and Sri Neyveli Venkatesh did a fine job handling the percussion part of the proceedings.

Thanks Ram...I decided to hear Gayathri Girish instead since I thought Krishna's concert would eat too much into Sanjay's. As it turned out, Krishna's main piece was completed by 6 so I could have comfortably caught the whole of Sanjay's...Gayathri sang really well but this looks like a bad miss - Kaanada and Varali?!!...tch tch....

It is indeed surprising to read this remark about MDR by Sanjay!

May be Sanjay has never had the opportunity to look at himself while performing!

Will do shankar...it's a little late today but here's a teaser - Edutanilachitte (Sankarabharanam) was the main piece and RTP was in Hemavathi - Tisra Triputa (8 Kalai!).

I think what he meant was that at that age he found MDR's mannerisms amusing. But my interpretation could be wrong.

On referrring to TMK's as well as Sanjay's recent concert reviews, some factors come to my mind.

For both, MDR is role model now...
TMK : The current presentation style;
Sanjay : The mannerisms.

MDR a doubtless icon of CM.

I remember coming to Chennai in 1981 with a huge mental baggage - as far as MDR was concerned.
The Illustrated weekly had run a photo feature on MDR (in the early 70s ?)and since only few krithis were aired repeatedly on the radio - Giripai and a Superslow Amba Kamakshi -
I missed out on an early start, for my appreciation of MDR.
AND I ENDED UP NEVER SEEING HIM IN ACTION..

And I always curse that Weekly for putting me on the wrong track !

I personally never find mannerisms amusing -
( Nor do I find the strains of a Sarangi Sorrowful ...)

On such occasions one can easily notice that the artist is making that Extra Effort to put across a new idea that has occurred to him at that moment.
I had the privilege of watching how Pandit Jasraj sets up his mikes for a performance , last year.At KGS , half an hour before the concert started , he was accurately placing small mikes BEHIND him , too .As I watched in bewilderment (He was doing some chanting, purifying the atmosphere around and all that stuff) , he smiled at me and others who were already on the dias and said that he would not be able to control himself after he started.
And sure enough , he was all over the place , including backwards..

it seems once in a possessed mood while singing he pulled the bow of the violin by mistake during his hand movement.....
was it true?

I know only the joke of Ariakudi peering into T Chowdiah's Violin case after TC had essayed an alapana.
On being asked by TC , if he was looking for something , Ariakudi is said to have replied "just to wanted to see if you have some more strings in there !!

I have heard Bhimsen Joshi used to knock of mikes .
One of his disciples -Sreepathi Padigar - used to start khayals with a Brylcream look- Headgear glistening and closely packed.
At the end of the raga , he would like as though he had just come out of a shower !
