Re: 2016 Feb 14 SanjaySubrahmanyan SVaradarajan NeyveliVenkatesh BRajashekar BGS RLKMSpringFest
The function that preceded the concert was short and after that Sanjay and team were quick to start the concert. There was no announcement that audio and video recording was strictly prohibited.
I was overconfident that Suryamurthe was to follow the alapana as it was Sunday (Badari has written it was Rathasaptami also), but Sanjay had to spring a surprise. He chose to remember Lakshmi perhaps as he was recipient of an award that carried an honorarium.
Varadu’s shadowing Sanjay is by now legendary, Chaya may fail to fall behind the Sun (let me at least remember him) but Varadu will never fail Sanjay.
The swaraprastharas had clear Sanjay stamp. Some ‘tu’s were there (only a sprinkling). Bhagawan mentions how only a few artists are presented again and again. Sanjay must be keen to avoid being partial to just seven swara letters and must be introducing some variety. He mentioned in an interview that MMI was his favourite after GNB. To be sure, biased as I am, whatever he does is musical to my ears.
KHP had some nasal component, sure Sanjay remembered the hero of the raga.
His gestures or gesticulations while singing are by now part of the concert package. They have a variety of bowling, boxing, driving, take-off, and so on. They are not mere cheshtais, but have a well-defined correlation to the sangatis and sancharas. He brings them out sometimes even during the violin essay. I hope an instrument will be invented that can convert the mechanical movements to music. When that happens, Sanjay can rest his throat that he strains to the utmost to give the energetic music (double bull energy drink of Varsha comes to mind). He once mentioned that he tried to sit before a mirror and practise like Voleti, but gave up. Thank heavens! What is Sanjay’s music without those visual spectacles!
It was overflowing hall, but the crowd for RaGa was more. Also, the thani in that concert appealed to me more.

I enjoyed the concert very much. Only a real vidwan such as sanjay can pull of a real RTP in Varali. I have heard so-called RTPs where they launch into ragamalikas for both ragam and tanam
after just a tryst with Varali. His KHP was nagaswaramesque (reminded me of SSI) - probably the training under Sembannarkoil Vaidyanathan. Beautiful concert - and I too expected Sooryamoorthe given that it was ratha saptami. Saw badari sprinting to the front
and very thrilled to meet arasi m'am after the concert.
Sanjay's acceptance speech was very very nice as was HH Thiru's. Sri. Krishnaprasad has rendered yeoman service and he deserves our gratitude. BTW next year it is our own Neela Mami getting the award.

sAvEri varNam (Vadivelu of the Tanjavur Quartet?) was the opener. Some fine touches by Sanjay there.
kEdAram which followed adds the right touch to usher in other rAgAs. What better than BhArathi's vandE mAtaram enbOm, saluting mother land?
SaurAshtrA and sweet mAlavi paved the way to a classy, attention grabbing (pin drop silence all around) KharaharapriyA. Super rAgA singing, and I started hoping for kOri sEvimpa rArE which I'm partial to from Sanjay and was a tad disappointed when he started p(r)akkala nilabaDi (love the song, but have heard it often).
Yet, how refreshing it was to hear Sanjay sing it yesterday! There were some exquisite passages, that jewel of a song polished to perfection. The RTP and rAgamAlikA svarAs were mighty pleasing, but kharaharapriyA ruled...

The crowd for RaGa was more. But in a overall sense sanjay's concert was wholesome with good accompaniments.Vardu's accompaniment is very sweet and there are no screeches at all in bowing. One of the rare occassions Sanjay took up Karaharapriya for elaboration.Pakkala Nilabadi was presented with good exchanges between sanjay and Vardu.
As mentioned by Sri Krishna Prasad,Sanjay must be be complimented for encouraging Sri Rajasekhar on Morsing.
Generally five concerts in spring festival are repeated each year- TMK,Sanjay,RaGa,Sudha and Bombay Jayashree.
Sri Krishna Prasad mentioned that this is a family run affair and will remain so.
Lesser known musicians are presented at SRLK facility at other times/monthly.
I must mention that Vijaya Siva and OS Tyagarajan were featured by SRLK in 2015 as part of MSS centenary celeberation and the first concert was by Smt Neela Ramagopal who is the awardee for 2017.

g_b,
Was happy we could meet after a long time. You could even meet my friend, a familiar face for you from your CA years
Agree with you. The jIyar spoke well, so did Sanjay, the invocation was sweet, though a song on VishNu would have been more pleasing to the jIyar?
There is no way one can describe Krishna Prasad and his family's dedication in promoting
music education and performances over these years. His dogged pursual of it, dealing with the nitty gritty of it all, should be a lesson an inspiration for younger organizers...
As always (let's not take it for granted), Varadu and Venkatesh highlighted the concert no end.
No complaints, but mukha Sanka (as we have talked about it elsewhere) can only be a upa-upa pakka vAdyam, in my view. With a heavy concert like this (or even otherwise), a khanjari or a ghaTa (both, even better) truly ornament a concert. Then, mukha Sanka embellishes.
Venkatesh with all the three, or two (sometimes none) would have inspired Sanjay even more! Bear with me if I'm wrong

Arasi
YOu must be the most abhimana fan rivaling possibly aravindan mudaliar for sanjay. I am glad you had a chance to hear sanjay after the miss of chennai season due to rains. ON a guessing note , sanjay may have dropped an early bharathiyar song because of you . He may have also sung kharaharapriya instead of bhairavi (we all know your dislike of bhairavi)- time for not to crib that he may have kori sevampare instead of pakkala nilapadi. By the way was arasan there in the concert ??

@ Rajeshnat: Im still a good friend of @Arasi inspite of my love for bhairavi > KHP
regarding rasika spotting..
Did meet Arasi, before the concert, when i was waiting to get into the front entrance.
Said hi to GG on my way back to parking.
@Hnbhagwan was seated behind me. Since I like to maintain pin drop silence in the hall, missed an opportunity to say Hi to him.
spotted KVChellappa in 4th row corner . Wish to meet him sometime
being seated in front rows, had an opportunity to use my SLR for some clicks. Will upload good ones on my blog.
Though its easy to get myriad hues of expressions from Sanjay, its tough to get even ONE from Varadu. Hope I will be quick enough next time to capture even that minor expression.

Rajesh,
I'm in no way near Aravinda Mudaliar (and of his group) in their worship, and you know that! A steadfast fan, yes, for more number of years than I have known you.
Bharathi was for the tamizh audience, and for familiarizing kannaDigAs to him, I'm sure.
Bhairavi? You do know that over the years, I have developed a taste for it. To tell you the truth, I was hoping for viribONi from him (but rA-gA had already delivered it the previous day).
I have heard Sanjay sing an RTP in varALi before, even more engagingly--ambikai, jagadambikai varALidO a la TNS (hope I got the words right).
A pity, K does not come to concerts these days. Finds it difficult to sit through them. Not easy for me either. After Suryaprakash and Gayathri Girish's concerts at my CD releases, he hasn't attended any.

Dear Neela Ramgopal is going to be next year's recipient of SRLKM's prestigious award. Can't think of anyone better
It makes many of us on Rasikas.org proud and happy... 'Gnaanam' wins

Badari,
When I say I can't catch up with Aravinda Mudaliar and Company's enthusiasm, you seem to be catching up with Meenaakshi's 'shoots'! Good work! (see Amrutha Murali thread).
