I would have loved to be back there...(one day, I want to go back and catch up with all of you and visit the house of the creator of the Father Dowling Mysteries). And to think that I made innumerable trips to South Bend and St. Joseph's Medical Center for nearly a decade without knowing of you! :( :(

Beautiful 'spoils' of the (photo) shoot! In particular, I loved the last one - along the lines of 'jab SikhAri SikhAr ban jAtA hai' - ('when the hunter becomes the hunted')... ;)

Wonderful photos . Your hospitality is such a joy to see but unfortunately i cannot hear . VK has started wrting the review and i am pretty sure he is going to go most gAgA for hiranmayeem in lalita and also the two prolific pakkA VAdhyam artist.

Rajesh, did you break into my laptop? :)

While true ( what a delightful coincidence that Hiranmayeem was given our recent mention of it in the forum ), there is another aspect that I want to go gAgA that is not apparent from the song list. Stay tuned.

I wanted to be hunted with Brilliance :)

Rajeshnat, I am sure you can guess the surprise, knowing VK ;)

Great concert! Was fortunate to enjoy a rare evening of carnatic music at ND.. Loved the tanam portion in particular and Arjun Ganesh was simply outstanding! Hope to hear more such concerts at Notre Dame..

Let us start with Rajesh's mind reading which were spot on.

Lalita alapana and Hiranmayeem were indeed fantastic. In general, Lalitha comes across to me as part exotic part dreamy and part sombre and serious. Amrutha with Rajeev's excellent support brought about all those qualities and more in an integrated manner and it was a great treat.

Rajeev's nAdham on the violin is quite sweet and measured and his accompaniment was just in the right proportions through out. His dwijavanthi alapana/raga outline return was excellent and so was Lalitha.
Arjun's mridangam playing style is also quite to my liking. It is quite dynamic without being noisy. He finds a little place or two to sneak in like or 8 or 16 strokes in a matter of a second at the right time. This thani after the RTP was quite compact and enjoyable. I would say it was short, probably 8 minutes or so but very good.

The big gAgA I alluded to earlier came after Lalitha. I was not sure if there will be an RTP. So that was a good surprise. It was a raga malika thanam which added that much more weight to it. And her first raga change in the thanam was Mukhari. Her take on Mukhari in that thanam format was excellent which included an outline of a lot of aspects of Mukhari and Rajeev's return on that was equally great. That made my day. I think Kambhoji thanam followed that. Hamir kalyani pallavi was done very well and her tonal purity shone through here.

Amrutha's voice was in great form and she has a good range. A few times when she reached into tara sthayi Panchamam it was without any strain or scratchiness. She gives a lot of importance to the lyrics and proper enunciation of them without any mumbling and her pronunciation would satisfy even the pickiest one among us ( you know who you are ;) ) who expect the highest standards in that department.

As you would notice from the song list, there were quite a few HM originated ragas. I am not sure how unusual that is. The concert started with the Behag varnam which she sang very well. We are used to hearing Behag in the thukkada section but this TRS behag varnam definitely creates a different and welcome beginning mood to the entire concert. The RTP was Hamir Kalyani. And add Dwijavanti, Tilang, Sindu bhairavi etc to that list. You would not be faulted for wondering if the concert had an overall HM flair with that kind of a song list. Not that there is anything wrong with that but the reality was it was all in the CM template in sense we are all used to. We should give credit to the team for making that happen.

The compositions in Pantuvarali and Malavi provided the necessary contrast in raga aesthetics and laya dynamics respectively. The kalpanswarams in Pantuvarali were quite noteworthy.

Amrutha's sruthi perfect singing seemed to have had an effect on a few who otherwise do not attend CM concerts. They mentioned that they will start attending more CM concerts in the future. A few people also liked how the three of them on stage interacted with each other enjoying each other's music. The small auditorium and a sound system set just about perfect with the right amplification created a great atmosphere, quite an intimate one which enhanced the experience.

The concert of close to 2.5 hours flew by with absolutely no slack at any time. It was a well organized and executed concert and it was highly enjoyable.

What a wake up call from my torpor!

Having heard Amrutha Venkatesh only recently after many misses, I can empathize with your pleasing experience of her music.

Kokilam,
Enjoyed reading your review. Rajeev and Arjun Ganesh are definitely a plus.

Meenaakshi and Monsieur at Notre Dame are a pair of amazing hosts and serious organizers. Wish my weary limbs find their way at least once to their part of the world. Who knows, Ravi. We may even meet up there :)

And the lady with the lens casts magic. Great pics, including the cuckoo's spring dance step? His mate's smile was something to cheer me up too, says this akkA (wish I were that young) :)

The HM rAgA route is apt, considering the number of HM enthusiasts in the audience...

VK, thanks for the lovely review.
VK, did you catch the way she ended the English note with keeravaniish notes? I am listening to it now and it is beautiful. In the thanam, after kambhoji, there is charukesi with haunting beauty :)

Me guilty of requesting behag varnam :(
This TRS varnam is a masterpiece and her interpretation of behag with beautiful accentuations and articulations of notes is exquisite. Well, this is true of all ragams.
Fine diction + Pure notes + Feel for composers’ idiom = Amrutha’s music :) :) :)

“Who knows, Ravi. We may even meet up there ”
arasi, please. :)

jinija, nice to know that you are in my neck of the woods :)
We have a couple of South Indian benefactors :( in our Indian classical music association and that makes it tough to have more than one Carnatic music concert per year.
A very warm, springy welcome to the town of Touchdown Jesus :) :) :)

Yes, that catchy change to the lower 'Ga' of the English note made me take notice. I now recall the charukesi after Kambhoji in the ragamalika thanam.

Hi meenaakshi thanks! Have to compliment you for the flawless organization.. I had contacted the classical music association a few weeks back about hosting Sri TNS (my guru) during the summer.. it was then that I was told they can do only one concert or so.. I totally understand the difficulties in finding benefactors for CM here. You guys are doing a great job bringing CM to us in spite of these issues - I can't thank you enough for that. Kudos!

Such knowledgeable, appreciative and articulate audience will definitely give a great fillip, esp during her maiden US tour(?), to the aspirations of this young artist.
