Sorry I could not make it .apologies. Is nayaki kanada a combo raga where it has shades of nayaki and kanada or does the raga have its own raga swaroopam.

Wow! Warren Senders was quite a regular on the rec.music.indian.classical in the early days of the bitnet (pre-internet) circa 1992-93. Isn't he a khyal singer based out of Pune?

Very happy to hear of this event at Uday & Radhika's house. Would love to see a recording/video!

As a result of that I got to meet him when he visited London and had an afternoon conversation with him, sometime back in 1990-something. This is the first time that I have seen him sing.

A major feature was the absolute joy he has in the music and its performance, which he has been doing for forty years now.

In a non-musical interlude, he spoke of the generations of guru-shishiya tradition, how important it is to him, and how it has affected his life in ways above and beyond music. Paraphrased and and abbreviated: "It is important that my students sing my guru's songs; it is important that their students sing my guru's guru's songs; it is important my my student's 10-thousandth students sing my gurus's 10-thousandth guru's songs." Tradition is a top-favourite word in the carnatic community, but I have never heard it spoken of with such warmth, depth and passion. He went on to say how the future of the tradition will not happen if we spoil our planet, and it has been music that has directly influenced him to see the point of environmental issues, and how vital they should be to each one of us.

No, it was not a long speech, and it did not at all spoil the music. Nor was it just deadly serious: Warren made us all laugh, several times.

Our Nageswaran is known for the breadth of his musical horizons, which extend far beyond India, let alone beyond carnatic. Apart from him and his wife, Ram Narayanan, and a lady whose name I can't bring to mind, who I think sings both CM and HM, there were no faces known to me from the CM Chennai world. There was a good turnout. Uday's main hall is perfect in size and shape for concerts.

Thanks enormously to Uday and Rhadika for bringing this event about and hosting it.

I have only one regret: that I had to miss Jaysri and Jayaraj.

Thanks everybody !

Varsha, what nonsense ! I have not known you do anything that's not important and meaningful (i.e., no "vetti" !) and that's what inspires me. So it is for selfish reasons that I invite you :). Will share video soon and perhaps catch up sometime.

The work that will be a beacon to folks like you and myself for hundreds of years

I once put Sasikiran into great embarassment by asking him to request sruti sadolkar to sing this, in an evening concert.
I should have known better . A late night melody , the suggestion of which rankled the artist.
But thats the way with HM.I still feel sorry for putting him through that.Wonder if he has forgiven me :D
