Sir, what an impressive list, and how reassuring indeed! Obviously we have all grown.old yet healthy and wealthy listening to Carnatic music. I have a devilish fellow lurking in some corner of my brain, and he is raring to go with his own version of ragas and their influence. I shall try and rein him in, but as they say, there are no guarantees in life.

A Modern-day Rasika guide to Carnatic music and its Health Benefits:

Whenever a concert begins with a varnam like the famous ones in Kalyani, Mohana, Shankarabharana, Shahana, Natakurinji, Darbar, Todi or Bhairavi, it is known to lower BP and reduce perspiration.
On the other hand, a kinky varnam in Garudadhwani, Lavangi or Sarasangi brings back conditions like skin rash and adenoids. It also exposes the poor Internet signal in the hall as one tries frantically to connect with Google etc.

The second item, if it is in Hamsadhwani, brings back regular breathing and a metabolic laissez-faire, and one beams at neighbours, muttering "Hamsadhwani :)! "
If, on the other hand, it is a Pancharatna kriti or an obscure composition in an unknown raga on an unusual deity, there is a certain anxiety and heaviness of feeling like after a beer and biryani session gone wrong.

If the song is a Dikshitar Navagraha kriti, it has an effect of restoring memory power and left brain neural activity. One exclaims, knowingly, "of course, it's Tuesday, you see" or some such thing.

The submain is a dead giveaway of a person's Vata-Kapha-Pitta balance. If it is in some of those time-tested ragas like Pantuvarali, Purvikalyani, Vachaspati, Harikambhoji, or Vagadheeshwari, only those with inflamed pitta will object. The phlegmatic show a sign of indifference. The vata types try to show off their knowledge of the raga and song by humming a few bars.

The main works like a CT or MRI scan. It obfuscates the medical condition and sets back the man by a large sum. To avoid such an outcome, it should be a well-known kriti in one of the major six- Sh, K, K, Kh, T, or B. If it is in Jayantasena, Nasikabhushani, or some such rather exotic raga, it loses the audience and exposes their hidden collection of magazines, books or mobile phone games.

Tani avartanam- this is an easy one- helps in micturation and kidney function test.

The tukkadas always reveal the cholesterol condition of the man or woman. No one is free from a love for sweets, fries and bakery products. All this results in much swaying, Shabash-ing, and a general demenaour that says, "let medical advice go to hell, I am going to gorge on this insanely good dish".

Finally, the easy and sanguine walk out of the auditorium shows that the rasika burnt just a modicum of calories, had no major run-ins with the law and escaped unscathed from the concert. If there is head-shaking or some groaning, it shows an imbalance in vata-pitta-kapha, or at least some aggravation of rheumatoid arthritis. If the person refuses to rise from his seat, it means the concert was a mild to severe sedative.
