Re: AS Murali@Rama Anjaneya temple on Apr09th,2016
The weekend of April 09 and 10(Sat and Sun) was certainly quite a miracle in chennai . Like years 2004 to 2010, I as a rasika had more choice . There were atleast 8 concerts on Saturday , where depending on the incidental constraints that I had on that day- work , errands to run etc ,I could go to any concert with 20 mins notice. There was TMK in adayar, amritha/amrutha in different venues and even the unusually hibernating NGS mini(post NGS krishnawamy passing away) and skgs sabha halls was also into action. If i am right nayaki kotturpuram and concerts were also on with KVN day celeberation somewhere in mylapore. Hope this continues or rather Let rama continue to bless chennai with more concerts .
PSN mama, a great teacher has so many disciples . There are many who have learnt either part time or full time .There are also many who indeed have learnt with other gurus but have also come under shri PSN tutelage for his references/guru recognition to different sabhas . I have personally heard this name A S Murali , who is a long standing musician who has learnt from PSN mama - if I am right he may be one of PSN mama's early disciple sishyas. AS Murali has a brilliant disciple G Abilash whom I have heard few times and for a change had to hear the sishya (abilash)and then go head to Rama anjaneyar temple in tambaram to hear his Guru A S murali for the very first time.AS murali was in my radar for atleast 6 years and glad i had a chance to hear him for the first time. I also read some time before in the hindu ,that apart from AS murali each of his brothers AS Ranganathan (The mrudangist), AS Shankar(ghatam) and AS Krishnan(Morsing) all have excelled . INcidentally the kanjira sensation BS sundar kumar is the nephew of these 4 brothers . All these 4 brothers are sons of AK Sundaram Iyer, who has indeed done a lot to CM few decades back.
AS Murali has indeed a strong voice and if i could say he adds a lot of guaravam to the ssi-psn in atleast following exactly the paddantara . The start in sowrashtram had an early and definite imprint on my mind that here is a musician who is intensely classical . RanganAthude Was sung with a slight restraint with the two percussionist having more volume, had a feeling that vocalist was the accompanist amidst the two percussion artist.ramabhakthi samrAjram was sung with the usual gusto and I missed bit more dash in swaras , the violinist was not heard that much for the first two numbers. Then came few swift actions by one sishya of A S murali(srivatsan). Srivatsan himself adjusted the sound knobs and there was lot of discussion on sharp , bass etc. The volume anticlockwise was not discussed and I atleast requested AS Ranganathan to keep the microphone away and I was glad vidwan ranganathan did what i requested.
The volume was just right with the usual reverberation being there for these temple concerts . What a glow it was to hear narayanagowlai . The supernova Semmangudi mama owned this krithi and raga -sriramam and narayanagowlai. As Murali gave a fantastic rendition of narayanagowlai with a strong voice and intense tightness with layam- he zoned into a steady turf of classicism.
Lathangi alapana was very traditional no vocal acrobatics , and I liked him taking up few lines in viruththam and with he ending with a swirl thiruvenkata he managed to start with the popular venkataramana krithi. There was one microphone for the vocalst and AS murali rotated the microphone with the two sishyas for each round of swaras. With that rotation of microphone , I lost the lathangi alamElu mangai manalA muse . Swaras were again done only by As murali and it was very good.
The next two in nayaki and hindolavasantham were superb and it was the best of best in this concert. I have heard abilash singing with serene bhavam in ranganayakam and now I knew the source of nayaki bhavam . AS Murali touched me with his classical intensity. Lovely singing and nayaki was brilliant . The next hindOlavasantham was his school number and he sang very well and it appears I have not graduated to distinctly disambiguate hindolavasantham and natabhairavi . A rare garudadwani krithi ananda sagara did not register that much as the more favourite number tatva meruga tharamA , I think i am hearing this rare krithi for the first time in a live concert .
The main was a pracheena kharaharapriya . Alapana touched all the significant markings of ssi school and I enjoyed it with Murali showcasing with great voice throw . The krithi was well done and the only disappointment was he not singing the neraval kantiki sundara. The swaras were well done by him and his two disciples , the last round was given to abilash and abilash sang brilliantly to hand over for tani(what a genius is abilash in leashing with intensity). Also the second disciple Srivatsan also sang with great ideas.
For the temple anumanai anudinam was an apt one . A lovely ragamaliga composition of swami surajananda and if I am right his paramaguru's another disciple TMT has brilliantly tuned it . The purandaradAsa Maand rangabArO was a good pre closure . The usual sowrashtram and madhyamavati was again used to close the concert .
Melakaveri thyagarajan could have tuned his violin with bit more sunaadam . His volume was not adjusted right for first few numbers . AS ranganathan in mrudangam had lovely strokes and had a conntinous controlled aggression with a bit of higher volume robbing his true charm of mrudangam playing for atleast few numbers . Pudukottai ramachandran was really aurally assisting and not visually assisting and I enjoyed his play bit more than ranganathan during main.
AS Murali is a gifted vocalist and what stood out his unpretentious music and i liked his adherence to sticking with the paadantaram AS Murali showcased. SSI-PSN school was shown with no other school influence (I would have liked atleast one number away from that school to showcase the flair of AS Murali). This place rama anjaneya temple has the potential to become the next ayodhya mandapam of chennai and there is always intensity of music here.Overall i had immense satisfaction of listening to this concert in this lovely temple.
Overall a very good to excellent concert for 2 hours and 20 minutes.
