A very satisfying concert. What struck me was that he was singing in a much higher pitch than I am used to hearing him. I think it was almost 2 kattai. The neraval in Nadupai was really masterful. The swara patterns at "Payojaksha" was well thought and executed. An extensive lalitha alapanai followed. The ideas were really flowing which I think is a result of his extensive 2 and a half decade singing experience. Although, at a few lines in mel sthayi I thought he struggled due to the higher pitch. The keerthanai rendition was done well. After presenting extensive neraval, he did not present swarams. That could possibly because he had really presented a lot of ideas already during the neraval.
He then sang a very soulful saranga. Its not usual to hear someone deal with Saranga as the main item. He did full justice to the ragam and presented Gyana sabaiyil as the krithi. The swarams were presented at three spots, gyana sabaiyil, ananda and natarajane. Although the patterns were well constructed, somewhere I thought they could have been more aesthetic.
My thought was that MAS on violin could have played better. I have heard him play excellently in the past and in this concert, my high expectations of him wasn't met. G V Gurubharadwaj on mridangam accompanied very well.
Overall it was a well sung concert and a different one compared to the previous ramaprasad concerts I have listened to.
