Delhi P SunderRajan and Neyveli Narayanan put together a crackling inaugural concert last evening at Maarga-USA. It was a Guru-Sishya concert, with DPS supported by Vignesh & Aparna, and Narayanan supported by Ravindra Bharathy on the mridangam.
DPS started off with Vasantha varnam and a brisk Nattai (Swaminatha paripalaya). This was followed by another Dikshitar masterpiece Sri Matrubhutam in Kannada. Panthuvarali (Appa rama bhakti) got an elaborate treatment, with Vignesh ably supporting and even embellishing DPS, both in the alapana as well as in the kanda nadai swara patters/korapu. A fast paced interlude in Nalinakanthi (Manavyalakim) re-elevated the audience mood.
This was followed by an RTP in Keeravani. A short chakra thaanam, followed by a well-crafted pallavi - “Sathguru vin padhamalar panivome, Sangeetha Sanmargam pereve”. DPS enthralled the audience with his vocal powers when he sang the Pallavi. It was interesting to watch Vignesh & Aparna appreciate DPS’s nuances in awe and return the volleys in style. The RTP was followed by a sparkling thani by Narayanan and Ravindra Bharathy tried hard to keep pace with his guru.
DPS concluded the concert with a Semmangudi staple, Parulanna Mata. I do have to say, DPS showcased Kapi at its melodious best. In all, it was a great evening and an enjoyable 2.5 hrs.
1. Varnam - Vasanta
2. Swaminatha Paripalaya – Nattai
3. Sri Matrubhutam – Kannada
4. Appa rama bhakthi – Panthuvarali
5. Manavyalakim – Nalinakanthi
6. RTP Keeravani (+ Behag, Bhairavi, Sama?)
7. Parulanna Mata – Kapi
8. Mangalam

Sundar,
Thanks for the exhaustive review. A very good selection of songs. Almost all violinists sing well. I love and admire SK MC 's voice. Chakra thanam I have enjoyed sung by Madurai Srirangam Iyengar. This is more or less Thiruvandhapuram style of Thanam singing. Nadaswara Vidwans still practice this.
