7) vinAyakuni - madyamAvati - Adi - thyAgarAja

(Key: O=raga outline, A=raga alapana, N=neraval, S=kalpana swaram, T=taniavartanam)

Sri O.S. Thyagarajan (OST) gave a wonderful performance filled with a lot of sowkhyam and shruti sudham. Starting with a not very commonly sung kriti "tyAgarAja swAmi guruniki" in kharaharapriya, he then sang "apparama bhakti" in pantuvarALi. The speciality was that he sang the first charanam that starts with "lakshmi dEvi valachunA ......" which is not much heard in concerts these days and then sang the usually-sung final charanam that starts with "kapi vAridhi dATunA". The next song "mAmava sadA karuNaya" was a pleasant surprise as I have not heard OST sing it before. The elaborate toDi alapana that followed was done by OST alone for 25 minutes. Sri Mysore Manjunath followed it up with a 10 minute alapana on the violin.

OST then sang Sri MDR's composition "sAgara shayana" at the organizer's request. The request itself was an elaborate affair with the organizer trying to sing the song himself and even trying to do a small alapanai of bAgEswari before asking OST to start singing to which OST jovially asked - "have you finished singing" (so that I can start) ? :-)

Percussion support of the highest calibre was provided by veteran mridangam maestro Sri Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman and by Sri B. Sree Sundar Kumar on the khanjira. The taniavartanam in misra chApu taLam was a delight to hear.

The organizer at IFAS (I suppose you are referring to the lanky mucchad) is a complete jackass - somenody had convinced him last year about his latent musical potential and he has taken it upon himself since to provide a sampler every now and then...who will bell the cat?!!

Anyway, it is rather amusing and the poor chap genuinely believes he is destined for greater things than sabha secretaryship so one feels more of pity than irritation...my guess is that he will feature in the IFAS schedule sometime soon...

vijay,
I was not there for the concert. I think his name is sreenivAsan. He was once a big pain in between lec dem of Dikshitar by veteran MS AnantharAman and a very good concert of gurucharan. He was singing few lines of Dikshitar krithi, that too intruding Shri MS AnantharAman at the end .

A good side of him was once on a sunday morning concert of TVS, I asked him a ticket and then realized that I had forgot my wallet . He said Ok and I gave that 50 bucks 3 days later.I did not bother about the receipt ,but he ran and got me the receipt. The sabha organizers(like him and arusuvai natarAjan) if only they reduced their appetite before the mike.

OST was in very good voice. The Todi alapana was satisying. What was the raga he took for sruti bedam? sounded like kokilavarali to me.

This concert was a welcome relief after the miserable TMK@KFA and the hoarse and aggressive Sanjay@Vanimahal

Rajesh, so long as his heart is in the right place, I wouldn't grudge him an alaapana or two in between concerts!

As a member of the Would-like-to-sing-but-sounds-awful club, I strongly condemn the attack on a fellow member. :-)

I do not have anything against them. I have been impressed by TMK when he was still singing in afternoon slots. It is just that recently sloppiness seems to have crept into his singing. I do not consider sruti-adherence an optional element in any form of music. TMK would do well to emulate other artistes who sing more conscientiously, albeit less adventurously.

I also frequently listen to many of Sanjay's older recordings. I have no doubt he will give better performances whenever his voice cooperates.

Alert - Jampathe and others

Please be constructive in criticism. Constructive means shortcomings that they can overcome with diligence and effort, not ad-hominem attacks like "miserable XYZ@KFA" etc. The respective artists may read these threads, and attacking anyone personally goes against the spirit of this forum. Personal attacks are not allowed here, please comment on the music and not the person.

There is just a thin line of difference between personal attacks and constructive criticism, and one is usually perceived to be the other. So please be careful.
