Made in Bay Area
It was a Sunday afternoon (3rd Jan 2016), had attended the mridangam arrangetram of a 7th Grader, Master Avinash Anand. And the main artiste was none other than Vid. RaviKiran presenting his Chitraveena along with Vid. Nagai Shriram on the Violin & Vid. SV Ramani on the Ghatam. Such was the pressure one had to take in his very first concert & he was a 7th grader. The arrangetram was presided by Shri. Neyveli Santhanagopalan & Shri Cleveland Sundaram.
We were very curious to see how the young lad would fair in this tough test, while he actually seemed to have just come to accompany few artistes in a concert, like it was another day at office. Such was his confidence & persona that came with an instantly likable tiny package.
The performance started with a varnam in reetigowla, Ravi kiran Ji’s own composition. Next was Mooladhara moorti in Hamsadwani, a papanasam sivan composition. Avinash followed the composition aesthetically with ease. One would want to word it conveniently as over flowing confidence, but I must say it was just the right balance, there was no over flow of anything, be it playing or facial expressions.
Next was pamara jana palini in Simhendramadhyamam set to roopaka thalam. Shri Ravikiran being a child prodigy himself gave Avinash ample opportunities to show his flourish on the mridangam by posing challenging swara patterns. Also the combo got a bit more interesting with Nagai Shriram & Shri SV Ramani equally played their part.
Next was Meena lochana in Dhanyasi, set to Misra chapu thaalam. Avinash indulged in simple & complex sollu kattu showcasing his deep sense of thalam. This was followed by a Pallavi in Begada in Adi talam 2nd kalai ( Sama eduppu). Avinash handled all the nuances of the pallavi with ease with different nadai, following swara patterns & thala patterns. The choices of sollukattu were poetically in sync with the composition & were very clear out of his tender fingers. The jugalbandhi with Ghatam was very enjoyable & the senior artiste brought the best out of Avinash.
He was really enjoying the concert & that reflected in his playing. He did make his Guru Shri Ramesh Srinivasan & his parents proud by giving a wonderful performance; after all he too is a chip of the same block - from the stables of “Sarvalagu percussions art centre, San Jose”.
Santhanagopalan sir gave his best wishes to the young brigade, I am sure words of appreciation from such senior musician would have meant so much. Cleveland Sundaram mama recalled his pleasant memories with Shri Ramabadran mama & his family members. Also he elucidated the importance of small kids getting into serious art forms especially in the US as they are able to bring out the best to create an identity for themselves & associate themselves with the rich Indian culture.
The concert ended in a grand fashion with a senjurutti thillana. It was an inspiring evening, as Avinash’s performance inspired many of us wanting to learning the nuances of playing mridangam & continue pursuing it with more vigor.
