Brinda Manickavasagam at Thyagaraja Vidwat Samajam, June 4th 2016

Brinda gave a stellar performance at the Samajam yesterday, The gravitas of her performance added sheen to the hallowed hall where I have observed the greatest of artistes on the floor among the audience close to the stage.

Personal Observations:

1. Concert had a good mix of the familiar, the not so familiar and the most outright rare.
2. All the alapanas (Arabhi, Chandrajyoti, Kapi and Kedaragowla) were top class presenting the ragas clearly and crisply.
3. Nice elaborate neraval. Would have sounded even better if some neighboting lines had been used sparingly,
4. Praveen kumar provided solid accompaniment. Will sound even better if he can control the softness of the play in keeping with the dynamics of the vocalist.
5. Chidambaram Badrinath was competent and was able to show his virtuosity on the violin.
6. Great tribute concert to Thyagaraja befitting the auditorium

All 3 are rare,and two of them i am reading for the first time .I think we both once had a chance to hear before Entha kunthalinthura in suddha Desi. If my memory is right suddha desi has a shade of saramati, Vidwat samajam has a special vibe - the bonus of at times just turning right and looking at the bronze statue of T is a priceless treasure . Wish I was there.

Yes. Suddha Desi appeared like natabhairavi janyam.

It was an evening with a lot of different programs in the city but this was an easy choice to make
