One of the most awful concerts I have ever listened to!
Krishna began badly with an off-key rendition of Darbar varnam.

Then, Ma Janaki, Kambhoji was alright, until he got to the charanam, which he either never learnt, or was missing from his notes.

Palintsu Kamakshi was preceded by a miserable excuse for alapana: no ideas, hardly any sruti alignment.

The main piece was another slow piece, Kamalambam Bhajare. Although the Kalyani alapana was more convincing in content, the vocalism didn't keep up. The kriti was well sung, but the excess of slow tempo in the concert robbed it of any impact. TMK is no MDR, not by a long margin!

This artiste should get his basics right, and invest less effort in abhinaya and histrionics (although that probably kept a section of the audience fooled).

This is the first TMK concert I have attended in two years, and I really dont see what all the hype in the media (read Hindu) is about. One elderly mami was heard to comment: "He is singing as he pleases as there is no Hindu reviewer present" !!!!

Jampathe sir you are not alone. It was the most worst music i have heard .I to dont understand the hype about this guy .may be with money power he is buying reviews.Horribly slow delivery scant respect for audience irritating sabash and bhale in middle ,not to forget the Jaangiri puzhiyara mannerism as one maami put it " iven jangiri puziyarada nirutina paata kavanikalam"

imho ... One cannot possibly create a just opinion of an artiste after listening to a single concert......especially not if it was after a 'bad day' on their part (ie. assuming your views on the concert are correct).

Every great artiste has had a 'not so grand' performance at least once in their illustrious careers....& that performance should never serve as a reason to exclaim 'I really dont see what all the hype is about'.

I think TMK has produced some soul stirring & truly divine music on many occasions and certainly deserves alot of the 'hype' that is going his way..........that is ofcourse imho!:)

Needi-devadai (that Zorro-like character who is out to clean up the music scene) would have been very happy to read this review! :)

Unfortunately, I have to agree with Jampathe Sir. All the live concerts I've heard TMK live at have ranged from the mediocre to the atrocious. Merely singing ultra-slow does not make one an MDR, and neither does belting out swarams at increasing speed, volume and frequency make one an SSI. TMK is clearly capable of some great music - it will be a boon to CM when he stops all the jangiri puzhinj'ing and irritating people with all the abhinayam and unmusical noises that get mistaken for involvement, and starts focusing on the basics again - sruti and layam.

MBK sir it was not one of "a" not so grand performance but it was one of "those" not so grand performance. The fact is he is not singing as he used to before.
,may be taking audiences for granted.

TMK's kambodhi special @ Mudhra with a renedition-au-grandeur of "Kaana Kann Vendum" where he and Mysore Manjunath formed a brilliant, mutuallly-admiring pair has definitely been worthy of my time this season thus far. TMK's Meru Samaana, Kalgada and his Manavyalakim reneditions easily stand out as among his best I have heard..but truth be acknowledged, overall, he is a wee bit off-shine. His voice though is way more pliant and sounds better than it has been in my experience. With Grand-masters, it is only a matter of when...so, perhaps we should be patient. After all, even Vishwanathan Anand has his moments..he doesnt shine in every game...

It was Mysore Nagaraj on the violin. The song in Kambodhi is "kaana Kan Kodi".
