Acharyanet.com is running an online contest to encourage students to think about how best they can learn the essence of a raga and present it effectively in less than a minute. Not an easy task but nevertheless an interesting and pertinent one for any Carnatic Music student! We have given a choice of four rakti ragas and entries will be judged by renowned gurus including Sangeeta Ratnakara, Hanumad Gana Shiromani Shri Chitravina Narasimhan, Sangeetha Kala Acharya Smt Neela Ramgopal and Ganakalashree Smt M.S Sheela.
Placing the details here for the benefit of all and we look forward to sharing some entries on this forum as well.
Entries are being accepted till June 12th. Click here to see more details.
Interesting contest. It will awesome to listen to all the entries and also the winning entries. Fortuitously, on a long distance road trip yesterday, I was listening to some pantuvarali and reflected on the fact that certain portions lasting two or three seconds contain the stamp of this raga so unambigously and wondered, just for fun, if we can find such portions in many ragas and string them together in quick succession, like 8 ragas in one Adi tala etc. ( Of course, that reminded me of what SSI had done with bhAvayAmi and others with other ragamalikas as a recap of the all the ragas involved at the end. )
This contest is of course different in nature in the sense it is one raga for one minute and I hope that all the great CM talents in our forum will submit their entries.

Of all musicians I have heard, I rank Madurai Somu top on the list for bringing out the raga swaroopa/chaya in the
shortest possible time.(in secs perhaps). Even rare and out of currency ragas did not matter for him..like for eg Gambhiravani,Vakhulabaranam, Garudadhwani .etc were brought out in a jiffy.
Thats a great thought. Although I believe this idea has been implemented in many compositions. We recently conducted a workshop in Bangalore on Purandara Dasa's Dashavatara Ragamalika with Shri Chitravina N Ravikiran which had a grand finale with interwoven swaras of short bursts in multiple ragas. Challenging no doubt but a great skill to develop. Incidentally, the ragamalika was also tuned by Shri Ravikiran. I will try to see if I can share a recording of these type of compositions..
We will surely share the contest videos here at some point.
I am happy to share some of the entries in this contest so far. The contest is open to both instrumentalists and vocalists and deadline is July 12th.Kudos to these youngsters for making a wonderful attempt!
The contest will be ending soon and we have our work cut out for us in choosing the winners amongst the many talented entries. Here are some more entries I would like to share here. Will share more soon!
They all sound so good! Of course the joy they derive is there, but the seriousness with which they pursue it
Three year old Aniruddha's serious intent gets the prize, though behAg perhaps is more of his favorite rAgA as we find out at some point? Just guessing, folks
