The list will grow of course. Hardly any names of vidushis so far.

Perhaps it's going to be an instrumentalist?

Smt. Suguna V and Sri PSN are sangitha kalacharyas already.
The rotation principle may rule our Ravikiran, TMK etc. this year. It is most likely that Ravikiran will be the SK next year, and so an instrumentalist may not be chosen this year. A senior vocalist may be chosen.

Undoubted skill and achievement, but not playing regularly on local carnatic stage since... when? How many "ordinary" home carnatic concerts in the last decade? The last time I saw him, I felt that he might be one of the greatest percussionists of all time, so no lack of admiration and respect, but... SK is not for playing fusion concerts abroad.

(or not yet. Who knows what innovation the MA might have in store for us  )

Sri Vikku was awarded Kala Acharya in 1997.
In 2005, M. Chandrasekar received kalanidhi and no violinist has received after that. Sri VVS this time?

My oft repeated advice to the Music Academy is to make TWO awards every year hence forth, one for a vocalist and one for an instrumentalist. This is the ONLY way to cover all the backlog of deserving artists within their life time !

My recommendations this year are:
1. OST for vocal( senior most in the category) and
2. Kanyakumari for violin ( female violinist from Andra).

I wish the MA will look at the pattern over the years and honour an artist amidst this confusion. The rotation principle followed by MA is very nice.Since in those days, artists were honoured in their primw. Like Sri. Semmangudi Iyerval, Musiri Iyerval, Smt ML Vasantakumari and so forth. Appadi patha, ella artist kum award kidaichu thaan aganum. Namba padatta pada vendam. Etho onnu rendu perukku kidaikkama pogalam. Avargal periya vidwan allathu vidushi ah irunthal romba mosam. Example Smt Suguna Purushottaman. I feel both Smt.Suguna Purushottaman and Sm,t Suguna Varadachari must have bn honoured together.

And so here we are again... it's that time of the year when hopes are high and I hope this time it won't be a repeat of last year, when it nearly created a rasikas world war and then eventually led to "Tigerexit". But then the most coveted award of 'em all has had a history of drama on another level altogether. There is no doubt that the number of deserving musicians far exceeds how many can or will be awarded.

I think that the Lalgudi siblings should also be on the list.

Last year N.Murali wanted to do a revolution and he nominated 47 year old Sanjay for SK. It was after a gap of almost 37 years that a person in his forties was getting the award. Now I suggest that he has opportunity of going down in history as the President of MA who nominated and awarded the youngest musician. I hereby recommend Amrita Murali who is not yet 30 for SK. The youngest was Semmangudi at 39. Now Murali Mama, c'mon, make history. Here's your chance.

But how, will other senior musicians who have been listed digest this? Not considering such pitamahas in music, if Amrita M is awarded now itself, is it not like adding insult to injury? I am not saying Amrita M is not deserving, her music is full of bhavam. She is a worthy musician no doubt. but why so soon? maybe after some 10 years, when she has more experience.

Mahavishnu,
Your post serves three purposes. An instrumentalist--fine, a woman, great :) AND a veteran at that. MLV got it young. So did her student Sudha. Now another student of hers, a long time veteran performer! She satisfies (at least for me) the qualifications (the above, and for her being an excellent guru who has trained excellent young musicians).

Vilomchapu,
Amruta Murali? As much as I like her music, I'm afraid she has to wait her turn. Bypassing Ravikiran? And all the veterans? Murali and the committee needn't ignore the line of much deserved seniors! Sanjay deserved the title no doubt, but to make thirty year olds Kalanidhis doesn't have to become the norm now!

As Sundararajan and the rest of us have been repeating, two awards each year please, is a better thing to do. One for a vocalist, one for an instrumentalist. No big deal, their dividing the 'presiding over' sessions responsibilities!

Amrita M
Amruta V
Whichever vowel's before the T
They both seem very fine to me!

I was going to post "Amrita M," but I thought everyone would laugh at the suggestion of one so young getting the award. I'm glad to know that I was wrong about that. Arasi is right though: it is skipping a generation or one and a half. Ravikiran should come first. Vijay Siva?

This yearly exercise is helpful to come to know of various artists, some of whom might have slipped from our minds.
Smy. Gayathri Girish has been in the forefront in not only singing, but in doing research and taking CM to more people. There are many, many more, and I am sure other rasikas will remember to bring up their names.

It need not have to become norm. Semmangudi was awarded at 39, so there is a precedent, though the precedent is almost 70 years now. It can be a one off award like in SSI's case. I am a great rasika of Sanjay but I did not agree with his choice because there were seniors. Sanjay himself should have stood down and suggested that at least Vinayakaram, Karaikudi Mani, and VVS be honoured first and then what about Aruna Sairam? My take on Amrita Murali was meant to be a sad reminder of the lopsided priorities of MA ever since the 1940s.

When Budalur was honoured the gottuvadyam was honoured. I remember Ravikiran'ss father, in a lecdem, saying that Budalur got the SK for this instrument. Similarly Valayapatti and AKC were honoured and thereby the tavil and clarinet were honoured. Similarly the ghatam as an instrument should be honoured and what better way than to honour the man who took the instrument all over the world - VINAYAKARAM? This year it should be Vinayakaram, I feel.

While all the names doing round are deserving,i feel OST should be rewarded the title this year.As some one mentioned Violinist has not beenawarded since 2005. LALGUDI SIBLINGS being very senior and performing for over 3 decades must be considered.

Since there seem to be too many in the field that deserve and it goads the rasikas on hot debate on who should have (are we seriously under the impression, er misimpression, that life is fair?), how about a change - change a to o. kalanidhi to kola(i)nidhi  :P Would that whittle the field down and make it manageable?

Or would that cause even hotter debates on who does better kola(i)?

Every year this type of thread servers a few different purposes:putting in our favorite candidate of course but also airing the pet peeves about members of this forum, musicians, sabhas, the selection process, whether SK matters or not etc. They all serve some useful purpose or the other, cathartic or otherwise.

Ravikiran will be great. I also sense the Kanyakumari possibility.

sankarank,

How we have arrived at a grave and disturbing word like kolai (murder) in a trivial way over nearly a century! 'How did he sing kalyANi?' 'kolai paNNiTTAr! (he murdered it!). Or, oRE kolai! about anything sub-standard!

Poet that you are, kalaiyum kolaiyum can become a poem. Traditional verse comes so easily to you and I look for one in the kavidaigaL thread in the Lit forum :)

Arasi, I think you are into making the classic mistake of mixing up of 'sankark' and 'shankarank' all over again. Those are handles of two different people.

If you go back and check history on this forum - I would have never commented on this award whether it is deserved or who should get it.

I think most artistes who are well appreciated and dedicated themselves to music - whether kalpita wise or kalpana wise will deserve this recognition at some point in their career if only years can accommodate it.

May be we should have a summer sadas!!

I cry about thinks like: do we need a fields medal winner (Manjul Bhargava) to address the sadas and tell us that integer ratios of frequencies are pleasing to the ear? Or MSS has perfect Fourier coefficients? Or that sangita ratnakara mentions how many combinations of integers exist in 16*4.

I feel like doing a Jay Leno and asking all the EE graduates that we churn out in India in droves as to how many of them know pancamam is 3/2? Or the physics graduates who have learnt eigen functions and eigen-values and eigen vectors and quantum mechanics if they have a clue?

If you want a sample - here I was - I learnt it when Sri Shashi Kiran peddled Rasika/Gayaka floppy disks with material from Sri M. Subramaniam.

And there are many NRI engineers in my family who have still not pondered over this - even as they send their kids to music classes and get them through arangetrams.

This is a colossal failure of a civilization!!!! not just a society.

shankarank,
I concede--classic mistake was committed (well, made!) when I DID (this in bold print to wear the senior badge, senor!) make the mistake a while ago. Yes, I did mean the other sankar when I referred to his tamizh poetry. Yes, the spelling not perfectly done there, but do note that the 'h'you use in your name, I did not use there.

I do know you now by your posts, distinct as they are from many other posters.I am learning at each step (this being the second one). Watch out for my attaining perfection in my next post addressed to either of you :)

I don't know what you both look like, but I do have clear images (of my own) about the two of you when I respond to your posts :)

OS Thyagarajan sir (senior vidwan with many years of providing chaste Carnatic music) and Priya Sisters (they have been singing at least for 20 years if not more and are consistent performers. Always give sampradayika kutcheris i.e. really classical stuff upto main and then soulful devotional items post tani. If Priya Sisters are awarded then it will be like indirectly awarding Sri TRS and Vidushis Radha-Jayalakshmi duo. Both being excellent musicians but not awarded SK).

Around mid June last year MA announced that Sanjay is SK designate. Wonder why still they have not made the decision for this year.
I think Chitravina RaviKiran can be given Sangita Kala Acharya instead because he has trained so many students.

I feel we need to ask ourselves: Nidhi chala sukhama, Aacharya mattum Poduma?
This can be a pallavi line
And each aspirant must demonstrate their credentials for either award by singing this.

VK,
:)
Yet, in Ravikiran's case, this shouldn't apply at all. It's the missed out seniors who need to be recognized somehow, the Academy thinks. Sangita Acharya comes in handy there. Ravikiran is too young for that award, though he has put in enormous amount of years in music for someone young.

OST has also been overlooked in the past years.

One year later, same topic, same back and forth! And I can't resist jumping in the classic arachha-maavu grinder named rasikas :-)
HarishankarK wrote: I think Chitravina RaviKiran can be given Sangita Kala Acharya instead because he has trained so many students.
Whence the ignorance and condescension?! The Sangeeta Kalanidhi is purportedly the premier title awarded for achievements in the field of Carnatic music. For a starter-list of Ravikiran's contributions to CM please see
http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic ... 25#p284784

That list actually leaves out his achievements as an Acharya, collaborations with other genres, Melharmony work (since it is not "sampradayik" :) . And since June 2015, he's also done the setting to music of 1330 verses of Tirukkural in CM.

Priya sisters though performing for two decades can be considered later as there are many who are senior to the sisters and performing for longer periods.
In Instrumental GJR Krishnan and Vijayalakshmi are performing sinc 1980's.
In vocal there cannot be any body more desrving than OS Tyagarajan.

Like for films we have an award by fans, we can have an award instituted by a sabha, say MA itself, that will be on the basis of the choice of rasikas. We can have variety here, one for each instrument, one each for various aspects of singing, etc. There is nothing like a uniform choice, no matter what the composition of the choosers.

It would be interesting if Rasika.org can take lead and have one/two awards each year.Of course it needs contribution from members.A Special Committees consisting of eminent people like RSachi,Madam Arasi ets can be appointed by the forum.
But first the formation of CORPUS is a huge task.

MaheshS,
On the dot! Any other award pertaining to CM--by big or small sabhAs, other institutions and groups of rasikAs aren't debated about/fought over as the SK award. If it weren't looming so large in our minds, why would we criticize the Academy for its choice every year, and also zero in on its conducting its business in other matters? The long standing Academy does mean something to us all.

Bhagwan,
Thanks for recommending me but I'm not a skilled rasikA at all to be given that responsibility :(

Rasikas.org has only one role. To represent the views of its members who are avowedly avid listeners of Carnatic music.
This can be accomplished by any of several means including polling, survey, and a petition. But after all MA is by itself an organ and they function with full autonomy. I am inclined to always respect their prerogative. Meanwhile all discussions here are just for airing our views. I don't see any canvassing or politicking in this freewheeling discussion which at best is only of a general interest to rasikas and presumably to artistes.

By the way, Chitraveena Ravikiran (my prediction for 2016 SK) sang a tour de force RTP today in Pallavi Darbar.
