PALLAVI DURBAR-DAY 2- 30/6/16

Post by CRama »

VISHNUDEV NAMBOOTHIRI
Acc.K.J.Dileep-Violin
Sumesh Narayanan-Mridangam
Pallavi- Chatur raga pallavi- Naattai mayakkum Aayiramaandu nilaikkum Srutilaya bhaavathodinaintha Isaikke aadaram neeye.
Ragams- Nata, Maund, Thodi and Kedaram.
Talam- Adi 4 kalai.

A very promising singer of the younger generation, presently a student of PSN. Has got a pliable voice that easily negotiates all the three octaves with sound manodharmam and repertoire of the SSI school. His alapanas had influence of TNS also. He was in US for some time and now I think he is settled in Chennai seriously taking efforts to foster his singing career. In this slot, he presented the very intelligently crafted RTP embedding the names of the ragas also and was presented in Adi 4 kalai. He said that the pallavi is a tribute to KVN who had popularised the 4 raga pallavi of Ariyakudi. His pliable voice enabled him to present a vivid portrayal of all the ragams chosen with the raga bhavam in tact and in the right proportion of karavais, brighas, akara passages. He touched mel panchamam in Thodi effortlessly. The glide from one ragam to another was so smooth. Ragam, tanam, neraval, swarams, koraippu done in all the four ragams. Keezhakalam, mel kalam etc was done skilfully. The pallavi was later changed to 2 kalai and 1 kalai. On googling, I found that he has performed the same pallavi elsewhere and it is already in the you tube. Dileep’s violin returns were very enjoyable and showed MSG pidis occasionally. Sumesh supported commendably with his deft strokes and anticipation. First tani was in 4 kalai and then again done in 1 kalai. He concluded the programme with Muralidhara Gopala in Maund. A commendable performance by the team.
There were some suggestions from our forumites (see Vidvans and Vidushis thread) that Vishnudev should have a makeover of his hair style and beard. He has complied with that. He looks handsome now.

PRIYA SISTERS
Acc.M.Rajeev-Violin
Patri Satish Kumar-Mridangam
B.S.Purushothaman-Ganjira.
Pallavi- Aadi Sankaram Athi dayaakaram Aarsha Guruvaram Aham bhaje Aharnisham Aachaaryam
Ragam- Poorvikalyani.
Talam- Tisra Triputa Mishra gati.

Priya Sisters commenced their programme with Undethi Ramudu in Harikambodi. The pallavi was designed by their Guru TRS and they offered the pallavi as a tribute to TRS. Shanmugapriya was having some voice problems. Raga alapana and tanam was done by Haripriya. Shanmugapriya joined in neraval and swara segments. Tanam done in TRS pattern was very scholarly and enjoyable. Full justice was done to all the elements of the pallavi. Trikalam was done with precision. Raga malika swaras were in Sankarabharanam, Hindolam and Mian ki Malhar. The Hindolam swaram of Shanmugapriya and Mian ki malhar of Haripriya were captivating. M.Rajeev embellished the concert significantly with his violin returns and Patri and BSP combo provided an excellent support in percussion front. Tani was very brief though. (To be continued)

Kunnakkudi balamuralikrishna performed Kalyani RTP with Akkarai subhalaxmi, B purushottaman and B S Sunderkumar.
Though I came in between the concert and could listen to tanam and pallavi. KB has improved a lot and his performance was of good standard.

Question - lOcana - eye; vilOcana - sight, right? I am wondering how 'tAmarasa vilOcani' fits - and if 'tAmarasa lOcani' would be better.

Ravi,
Both Apte and MW give the first meaning of vilocanam as eye. vilocanambu means tears. I checked Raghuvamsa 7.8, Also vilocana is used as eye.
vilokana means the act of seeing or examining.

I just heard the webcast of vishnu dev. Lovely voice and a nice throw with a splash of TNS at many places. While the alapanai, taanam and neraval of pallavi was very wholesome ,with the tani over, I felt it was like 03:35 PM in music academy afternoon slot in dec season . He just rushed the swaras in 10 minutes as though he had only 10 minutes as though the cutain comes down. In short swaras were not wholesome . What is the point in singing a muralidhara gopala at the end when it is a pallavi concert that time atleast he could have gone with swaras itself.
Many many musicians sing a great R , T and N but perhaps in swaras they just fizzle out . Wish he had gone more in swaras.

But he has great voice with a sure foot firm foot in sampradAyam. Sumesh is always rocking and dileep did a great job.

Rajesh, As you say, many musicians. It is because in a regular concert, they will sing swaras for many songs. There may be a separate main song also usually flooded with swaras. So, when they take up the pallavi, they give more focus on the other aspects and render not very elaborate swaras. But it is definitely not a touch and go affair. Any how, normally they dont sing like what they sing for a main kriti. That is the standard pattern.

Coming to Vishnu, he utilised his entire slot for the RTP covering all the aspects. There were two brief tanis- may be 3 minutes each. I did not note the time for which he sang swaras. But it was wholesome. Did not look like hurried up or curtailed. The reason for his singing Muralidhara gopala was that the violinist for the next concert was delayed by a few minutes. So Shashikiran told him to go for one more song. Hence he sang Muralidhara gopala.
