PALLAVI JAM- 3/7/16

Post by CRama »

As a part of the PALLAVI DURBAR, Pallavi Jam was organised at Arkay at 10. A.M. The following vidushis and vidwan participated.
Gayathri Girish
Nisha Rajagopal
Amrita Murali
Padma Sugavanam (Disciple of Seetha Rajan)
Dr.Hemalatha-Violin
Trivandrum Balaji-Mridangam.

There were various segments in the jam.
1. Vintage pallavis. The following pallavis were presented alternatively by the vidushis.
• Parimalarangapathe- Kambodi popularised by MMI
• Ithi manchi samayamu Devamanohariye- Devamanohari popularised by GNB. A few rounds of kalpana swaras revealed the manodharmam of the vidushis.
• Chintida manoradha poorikalyani- Poorvikalyani popularised by Musiri
• Kamalasani Sundari Chandravadani –Shanmugapriya popularised by MLV. A few rounds of neraval in both kalams made this very interesting.
• Ananda poorna bodhoham- Keeravani popularised by SSI. The sahithyam is taken from a Sadasiva Brahmendra composition.
• Nenje ninai anbe thuthi neriyil Guruparanmel
Anjadiru nam papangal panjay paranthidum akayal- Jaganmohini- popularised by DKP.
This was sung both in Tisra nadai and Chatusra nadai.
• Naattai kurinji enbar Sirantha engaladu- Natakurinji popularised by Alathur Brothers
• Nirupama sundarakara Nijabhaktha janaadhaara- Kanada popularised by Dr.S.Ramanathan

2. Swarakshara pallavi
3. Kalai pallavi- Of the many pallavis presented, a pallavi in 8 kalais rendered by Gayathri Girish is a very rare and complex one.
4. Pallavi with name of ragams embedded
5. Trikala pallavi
6. Tala malika
7. Pallavi out of 108 talams- Here pallavi in Hamsanadam ragam and Hamsanadam talam and Ragavardhini ragam and talam was demonstrated by Gayathri Girish and Padma Sugavanam respectively.

8. Ragamalika pallavi - Here a pallavi in Kambodi and Madhyamavati was rendered with elaborate ragam, tanam, neraval and swaras including trikalam by all the vidushis taking turns. The sahithyam was
Kana kann koti vendum (Kambodi) Saravananai Muruganani Guhanai (Madhyamavathy) in Adi talam – Poorvangam in Chatusra nadai and Utharangam in Khanda nadai. This was a very tricky pallavi rendered in a scholarly manner giving full justification to all elements of a pallavi. The seamless transition from one ragam to another in alapana, tanam, swaram by all the vidushis was commendable. A typical Pallavi Durbar concert.

9. After this a Ragam, tanam and pallavi in Poorvikalyani was sung decorated with a ragamalika of 50 ragams sung by the vidushis alternatively. This was really breathtaking. All janya ragams, no repetitions, no HM ragams.
Sahithyam- Bhakthihi Eva Mukti prada raga rahita anuraktiyuta- Adi talam.

10. Pallavi Anthakshari. Pallavis starting from the last letter of a pallavi. Audience were also requested to take part. But nobody came forward.

This jam, a novel theme conceived by Shashikiran was made a delectable feast by the vidushis for the listeners who were in large numbers. Their rich experience and ample manodharmam and confidence needs to be applauded. Kudos to Dr. Hemalatha and Balaji who rose to the occasion and embellished the host of pallavis – totally new, with varying talams, eduppus, etc with their sensitive accompaniment.

Wow!
Thanks CRama (especially on behalf of non-attendees) for the wonderful review of the Pallavi jam. It is not an easy job jotting down the Sahitya & tala in such an event and am sure this write up will be a valuable material for music lovers.
The 50 odd Ragamalika swaraprastara was mind boggling and the singers and violinist deserve kudos.
Thanks to carnatica & parthasarathy sabha for organising the event.

Vocalist, excellent job of identifying 50 ragams. Since you are a vocalist, there is no surprise in that. They should have given some prize for identifying 50 ragams so quickly.

CRama Sir,

You gave us the glimpses of the great manodharma sangeetham in your report. Rasikas hearts, like me, swelling with great pride and happiness to hear centuries of sadhana sampradaya encapsuled in garland of pearls-raga, pallavi, svaraprastara and laya well studied, extraordinarily practiced, great talents flowering to immense vidwath prakatana and prakashana. Hail the greatest of arts, Karnataka Sangeetham, Hail the Maha Vidwans and Vidushees in the past, Hail our beloved potentially Maha Vidwans and Vidushees, Hail Sashikiran, Krishnamurthy and team of event curator and event managers. Vidwans and Vidushees have proved that they transcend specialists of the past in the present, all encompassing specialization.
Rasikas it is time to shed the prejudices and offer total unstinting support to all the Vidwans and Vidushees and event curators and managers.

Blessings to Gayathri Girish, Nisha Rajagopalan, Padma Sugavanam, Amrita Murali, Hemalatha and Tiruvanantapuram Balaji; Sashikiran, Krishnamurthy and Team.

You are too kind; please consider it a tribute to you for noting the highlights of the concert, and a tribute to the artists (as well as Sashikiran and the team who made this happen). It was such a wonderful experience overall, be it from the selections of the pallavis or the selection of ragamalikas.

The only thing I will add to your review, if I may, is that R. Hemalatha's returns on the violin during the ragamalika segment were too good. The clarity in some of the swaras was really exceptional; I briefly felt Nithyashree (when her voice was in the form it was about 10 years ago) was singing despite the fact I could hear only the violin swaras. Kalyanavasantham was one such example.
