Agree with you on all accounts. Still, until they announce it, we have no clue. Though, what has been blowing in the wind says it may be a woman this time...

Just like the Sangita Kalanidhi broke the pattern, it is time for Acharya too. Based on my earlier post Shashi Kiran ( who is doing a lot to popularize music - but has done a lot to spread it's concepts) can be a starter there.

Better yet, in more lighter vein, T.M Krishna has taught all of us quite a bit - whether we take the Thesis or the Anti-Thesis  - we have indeed learnt a lot. So he is our new Acharya.

We are all kalanidhis as a result - so Kalanidhi should go to rasikas.org!!! ;) Since all musicians will henceforth feel slighted as a result, they can then stop receiving the award for ever  and dot the hall of fame

MA can think of awarding SKs posthumously also. Then there will be a very big queue starting from TNR, TRM etc

Shri semmu86,
IMO instead of evaluating an artiste's capacity, can safely register our opinion diplomatically like ' I don't agree this preposition '. Hope you agree with me.

Past history informs us that the SK award stirs the rasikAs up quite a bit--intellectually (their tastes at stake), emotionally (their personal favorites AND non-favorites) and entertainingly (that's why even the quietest among us speaks up).

Like the season, it generates a lot of excitement. It's a summer time staple for us where partiality is the theme :) when our likes and dislikes are displayed banner-size at times!

In all this, we overlook our own members (MKR, you are always up there;)). NSG is among the top in my list.

Thanjavooran,
Yes, posthumous awards mean that they have to go beyond U. Srinivas to include his elders to justify it. So, it can't be done.

Also, the Academy is all for the awardee taking part actively in its every day schedule both physically and musically (in discussions). They could devote a few sessions in the morning just for the greats they missed recognizing, and conclude the season with a salute to them with a documentary and a program of outstanding young artistes who play a nAdasvaram, mandolin and sing (Somu represented). After all, their millennium program is memorable in its spirit and content. It brought to focus the old greats--and even presented DKP and KVN live together on stage! An unforgettable experience...

Many years back when Erode Tahmizhanban was awarded the Sahithya Academy he gave one useful suggestion that the award has to be bifurcated in to two as regular and life time awards. This only seems a working solution to the issue of seniors versus relatively junior seniors. In a country where the population is very high and number of performing artists is high it becomes an arduous task for the 'awarders' to pick and choose the 'awardees'. Shivaji Ganesan never got the best actor award. When he became old he had to wait for 'Dadasaheb Balke' award because there were so many senior to him in the queue. Can a really young performer or a moderately senior performer think of getting such an award while he is in his peak? Sudha was lucky and so many others are not. The best example is Valangaiman Shanmugasundaram. His precision in my opinion was better than Yaazhpaanam Dhakshinamurthy.
Thiruvenkaadu Jayaraman a great singer of yesteryears was an 'unsung hero'. (though he never bothered).
The next issue is the element of subjectivity. As I see, in addition to music, lobby, marketing and carrying one's self, regional bias, clean record of personal and social discipline are also factored in to in the SK nomination. You can not really find fault with this. These are in Nobel prize and Oscar awards too.
But Indian awards in my opinion are too few for too many contenders. The only solution is to increase the awards proportionately. This they need to do before an awardee with diminishing faculties collapses on stage after receiving the award.
My choice for SK is Mandolin Srinivas posthumously and OS Thiagarajan for life time. Others can wait.

posthumous has no meaning and we do not know whether mandolin Srinivas can see his being awarded. It has meaning only recognition is given during one's life time.

@MKR, Are you proposing a Rasika Veterans award?

Ok, we shall give it to anyone who crosses 1000 posts.

And we shall have a Rasika Special Lifetime achievement award for anyone who crosses 10000 posts (of which there are only 4), or who has made some truly outstanding contributions

Perhaps Rasika Kalanidhi Award will be reserved for 2000 posts, to ensure that sufficient no. of people are awarded. No bidding shall be deemed necessary on account of rasika scarcity.

VV Subramanyam & Vikku Vinayakram
Other deserving musicians: Guruvayur Dorai, OS Thiagarajan

Good selection by Kunthalavarali( S Varadarajan,Eminent Violinist). There are no two opinions.she deserves both Nidhi and Acharya - She is a very scholarly performing artist as well as a teacher who has trained young violinists who are on platform these days.

Nick coined a better term - Harimout. @Srikant Elassery Go see last year's thread. What started out as appreciation for Sanjay quickly went downhill as many rasikas were upset that it should have been given to Ravikiran (none so more than the famed Tiger trio, who basically spent the rest of it's avatar's life muttering "tup tup" in heartbreak, until a black, classified operation put it out of it's misery). And so the rants were written in the rasikas book of rage... I even thought the place was unsafe for a while.

The rasikas are still hopeful for Ravikiran, now it's only a matter of when.

We need to school ourselves, in my opinion.
Like Sruti blog has done this time, we can settle on a name and propose to MA. But once they make the announcement, we need to respect their wisdom and celebrate that choice No more skirmishes.

Tigerexit is good: I'd shorten it to the slightly snappier Tigrexit. Both Tigrexit and Harimout could find a place in a campaign, but sadly, there is no campaign, only a lament.

What we need now Is Tigerback, Tigreturn and HarimIN!

The tone of the discussion has changed over the past few years. It used to be passionate. Now it has all the passion of discussing what numbers might win a lottery, when people didn't buy tickets anyway.

The aura and reputation is, largely, gone.

Why is that so?

The selection criteria for SK then is purely based on who excels in singing a cow, monkey and a snake song. One has already been awarded a few years ago !!

Is there any voting and selection process for SK and associated rituals,as done in conclave of Pope selection?!
Once SK is selected then Kalanidhi ragam could be played through loud speaker at the MA premises. Else Ragas like Andolika, Agnikopa, BhinnaShadja, Ghanta, will be repeatedly played to convey the failure in arriving at a consensus.
