Congratulations to Smt Kanyakumari. Very happy for her.

Here is a rare home video from Bahrain from 1980. A casual social setting with MLV, Kanyakumari, Sudha and Srimushnam Rajarao

Congratulations to A Kanyakumar for SK award.
Yesterday, I was in Tanjore Upenddran's remembrance day at NGS. Before Sanjay Subramanyan's concert started, there was a speech on TU. I could see Shri VVS, Sikkil bhaskaran, Karaikkudi Mani, Smt.Vedavalli.
During Sanjay's concert, I got the message from Madurai mani "fame" venu about AK- getting SK. I was, for a while, thought of VVS-senior Violinist to AK could have been given the award. ..

Guru M Chandrasekharan is there to day to wish and be proud of his disciple AK. Nice to see that.

good that MA selected a capable , deserving and tradition abiding vidwan instead of a media centric, attention seeking, SICKular , politician

Reg VVS, yes, very deserving vidwan , perhaps his foul mood and short temper went against him

Congratulating Ma on its selection is a dignified attitute

And soon , listing some lower charecteristics on a hypothethetical basis, oh there you step down.

And within those hypothesis (if this has happened..) trying to point someone in an allusive manner (small dose of decency by not pin pointing ), ... is there a personal grudge at play-
introducing someone out of the blue , and whipping SICKular.

"It is good that these characteristics were not chosen , and among that this person is not chosen , but I congratulate for choosing her instead of those and particularly . "

Instead
You could simply congratulate her. There are a couple of threads in full swing always dedicated for that SICKular, that can work as a boxing bag after a stressful day.

One of the things I admire about AK is that, of all violinists who accompanied MLV, she moved to a stage of becoming an alter ego.
As MLVs pitch dropped in her later years and as her music resonated with a pathos not seen in her early sprightly concerts, AK's playing had a soulful plaintive appeal.

A gender doubt:
Is kalanidhi common for both gender?
Kalanidhi comes as one of the names of Ambal in Lalitha sahasranama.
The word nidhi and its compounds such as srInidhi or kalAnidhi, only take pullinga [the masculine gender] in Sanskrit. However since it is ikArAnta [ending with the vowel i] it is often used to describe subjects of the feminine and neuter gender.

Sanskrit has two rules that are strictly followed by satkavi-s, and often bent in Bhakti poetry and musical compositions -

1. Grammatical gender is different from social characterisation of gender.

2. Subjects and the adjectives that describe them should generally be in the same gender. However, since all nouns in Sanskrit have designated [grammatical] gender, one can't change the gender of a term to suit the subject being described.

Stotra-s like the lalita-sahasranAma, which is of very high literary merit, have transgressed the latter rule occasionally - names like bhavAraNya-davAnalA, strictly speaking, are wrong. It should be bhavAraNya-davAnalaH, even while describing the goddess, since analaH [fire] is a pullinga term.

These rules do not apply as strictly in the desha-bhASa-s, which borrow the terms from Sanskrit, but divest them of their grammatical baggage. Tamil not only converts dharma and karma to dharmam and karmam, but adds an extra tail to the peacocks' note by making it a SaDjamam. Tamil will use buddhishAli for all genders, and won't convert it into buddhishAlini while describing a women. Similarly Hindi used shraddhAvan for men as well as women, not shraddhAvati for the latter.

These alternative usages, while 'wrong' within the highly regulated world of Sanskrit grammar, are perfectly valid in their vernacular avatar-s. Long story short, [Sangeeta-] Kalanidhi is an acceptable title for people of all gender identities.

It is bhavAranya: kutArikA & pApAranya dhavAnalA: isn't it?

Quite interesting, keerthi!
The word 'varan' is used in Tamil nowadays to denote either vara: or 'vadhU'! (Payyanukku varan paarkkarela? Or ponnukku varan kedacchhacha?).
vara:(varan) is masculine gender, of course.

But 'nidhi' also means storehouse or treasure. Hence Kalanidhi would be right, I think.

Well deserved award to Kanyakumari! I never saw anybody propose Dr L Sub for the award? Is he too much of a non-purist for it? He and his brother L Shankar have taken south Indian music- esp violin- to the international music community- pioneering contributions. He does play jazz, fusion etc--but he always plays carnatic in them. In my humble view, he very much deserves the award

With A kanyakumari getting awarded ,we should also come to the conclusion that VV Subramaniam is also not going to be awarded . Perhaps the main reason for VVS not getting awarded is his usual anti establishment stand (I remember a post by KVN son here stating that as the reason, i take his post as the real reason ). I think being continuously in the carnatic concert circuit is a key qualifier - L Subramanaiam(LS) and L shankar may lose out on that viewpoint as they are not there continuously in circuit . Possibly KJ yesudas will also be in line with LS and not be a AK like finisher.

For 2017 ,I have 4 names in mind . I am pretty sure it will be 1 of the 4 - but that 4 we will start discussing next year from 2017.

If I were a betting man, and if it was legal in India and if someone gave me some odds, I'd throw a fiver on TMK to be SK next year :)

Wonder if we can open a book on next years SK? Assuming it's going to be a male, in no particular order,

1. OST
2. Ravikiran
3. Neyveli Santhanagopalan
4. Vijay Siva
5. TMK

But now that even SK 2016 has failed to bring back the Tiger, I conclude that it has indeed been KIA.
