GV for Naada Inbam, 14/Aug/2016

Post by sankark »

Padma Shankar, BSivaraman, Trichy Murali

slOkam Ananda natana prakAsham s@navanIta hrdayam, terrific 2nd kalam swarams. B Sivaraman's tone - metallic adds a good deal of charm
mAkElarA vicAramu s@pallavi

If you were to ask for an example of kalai kattudhal in a concert, this certainly is one. She hit the ground running.

sri some fine brigA passages of sheer beauty. Padmas response started so beautifully and her essay is v good.
srI varalakshmi namasthubyam. Second ever time in a live concert. Last time I recall is by AVR at this venue couple years ago. s@pallavi

A galloping pirava varam thaarum with some brilliant percussion support following a bright alapana with brighas flowing freely. Swaras at pallavi now.

Classic case of taking a well worn kriti and tweaking it just a bit to make a brilliant presentation.

Bhairavi alap in progress. Some swarajathi teaser during the early part of the alap.

Most excellent Bhairavi alapana. A clearing of throat in the early portion of the alap reminding us that she is also human. A leisurely exploration of the upper ranges and touching the tara sthayi pa draws vehement applause as if the audience wants to give over their energy. Ending with some mandra sthayi sancharas upto the ma and concluding to a long ovation.

Fine return by Padma with some exquisite glides having the audience in rapture.

Neraval at neelabja dala lochaney sada rachitha dasa jana rakshaney nicely illustrating the swaraksharas. Picking up speed in mel kaalam now.

Reminded of 2 concerts of hers at the same location from over 10 years ago when svk mama was still around, one when she had several swara passages ending in ma ma & the other when she alternated passages ending in ma & pa. Some of the most inspired swara prastharas i have heard.

Slokam in nalinakanthi on Saraswathi (Manikka veenaam upalalayantheem) followed by the Tanjore Sankara Iyer masterpiece (nata jana palinee nalina kathi) - sangeetha rasike being the connecting link.

More Sankara Iyer. Rama namamey thuthi manamey in Desh. Slight tweak of lyrics to include the name of Sri Jagannathan in whose memory this concert is held. Points if you can detect where.

Jaya jaya jaya Bharatha Matha in khamas.

Sri rama jaya mangalam in surutti of Papanasam Sivan.

In this instance, I was thinking the entire AlApanai was a string of brigas.

latAngi, vAchaspati, chArukEsi, sarasAngi and rAgams of those ilk, they seem to be like whales. Need to be constantly moving; up and down the scale lest they get confused with their better cousins.

One thing that I didn't like in the otherwise superlative CM concert - the last part post-tani started to resemble a bhajan session than a CM concert.

Based on the lyrics it should work in the caraNam
vAdanaigaL pala sOdainaigaL (jagan)nAthanai
ninaindiDil nADumO

Right?

mANikya vINAm is on pArvati (as SAradAmbA) with a vINA - it describes her as mAtangi (daughter of matanga muni) - later on she is hailed as the daughter of matanga - jaya matanga kanyE....

GV ? Perhaps Gayatri Venkataraghavan ? It is better to spell out the name until she becomes a household name as MLV or DKP.

Indeed she has. Gayatri Venkataraghavan - GV

Three things that stood out

1. voice
2. voice
3. voice

What a smooth silky voice that looked like it could have gone easily for an hour more easily. Could easily be the best voice among the current crop of the female musicians, excepting swEta prasad from HYD I believe who has an even better unbelievably good voice. I had this crazy thought - now that bhairavi has been handled so good, she would take a virutham/slokam and treat us to mAnji, husEni & mukhAri :) It wasn't meant to be :(

Every accompanist seemed to be egged on by the excellence of others and so it was a grand experience all around.

While sitting in the concert, I thought... she should do that UN concert. And get that award thingy.

A superb concert.

Which was the bhajan session? Both kritis of Tanjore Sankara Iyer are superlative carnatic kritis. I thought the slokam added to the overall effect in presentation (sangeeta rasike causing goose bumps).

May be you meant Jayati Jayati Bharata Mata. If so, I can see your point somewhat but c'mon it is 14th August and even we can tolerate a bit of overt nationalism :-)

I think she could be even better if people stopped constantly comparing her to MS or treating her as some kind of substitute MS :-)

Yes.. The Sharadamba / Saraswathi dichotomy is somewhat confusing to me. They seem close enough in many ways.

I had written this but didn't post earlier. It was a GV concert and not a MS clone; given the MS centenary and GV's liking/devotion of MS.

sureshvv - in my books, rAma nAmamE is bhajanish. Nothing to do with the rAgam/tALam.

Good to know that you have spared Desh & Adi talam. May be depends on who you heard it from first. Mine was from a 80s TNS tape called Rama Nama Prabhavam.

In a TRS concert he mentions that it was a composition based on Drupad style of Hindustani music. Doesn't sound like bajani to me ... it's a beautiful composition!

Not to be a grinch, but pronunciation can withstand some improvement.

For eg. "vadhanaigal" would sound a whole lot better instead of "vadhanaiHal" .

May be caused by living too close to T. Nahar :)
