VIJAYA SIVA AT BHARATIYA VIDYA BHAVAN-15/8/16

Post by CRama »

The concert was held as part of M.S.Centenery Celebrations. It was titled MUKTI- VOICING FREEDOM. The accompanists were- Amrita Murali on the Violin, J.Vaidyanathan on the Mridangam, Anirudh Athreya on the Ganjira. Gowri Ramnarayan has directed the programme and she was the narrator. List of the songs.

National Anthem

This was a regular concert consisting of songs popularised by M.S Subbalakshmi. Before each song, Gowri Ramnarayanan related the song to M.S and shared some anecdotes about the song. Vijay Siva gave life to all the songs and faithfully sang the songs in the patantharam of M.S. He has expressed his appreciation of M.S music in many articles. Elaborate alapanas of Hamsanadam, Thodi and Sankarabharanam revealed his manodharamam. The Thodi Swarajati and Akshayalinga vibho were outstanding. The selection of songs were good. There was the desired balance between heavy weight songs and the post tani songs. Deiva thamizh nattinile and Manju nigar- I did not hear VS. I heard only M.S.

The concert went on for more than two and half hours. Amrita Murali's violin was excellent. Lalgudi bani with good manodharmam and control of the instrument. Very sweet bowing with the best mellinam and vallinam. J.Vaidyanathan once again showed that he is a very sensitive percussionist. Both the percussionists jelled well and the brief tani was well appreciated by the housefull audience.

Thanks to the organisers and vidwans and vidushi for giving us a wonderful concert on the Independence Day. The huge BVB hall was full. All were given take away lunch packets after the concert.

Brief and succint notes, CRama. VS never fails.

And the concluding piece -National anthem?
Am curios to know whether the artists stood up to sing the Anthem. Did the audience stay back till it was over?

CRama - Thank you so much for reviewing this concert! Is there any chance of recounting Smt. Gowri's introduction to the pieces?

Yes of course. All the artistes on stage and the audience stood in rapt attention and sang the National Anthem in chorus.
rsankar. Sorry, I did not note down what all GN told. But many have been told in so many places on so many occasions. Certain things which we have not heard earlier.
[*]When MS sang along with Semmangudi, she most appropriately behaved like a student. She will join in swarams or neravals only getting kannasaippu from Semmangudi. People will describe as SIMMA GARJANAYUM KOVIL MANIYUM.
[*] MS and Sadasivam took all efforts to raise money through concerts and purchase the houses of the Trinity. In one letter TS had written. "When they knew that MS is going to purchase the property they have increased the price manifold. M.S is required to give few more concerts to get that money".
[*]MS eventhough learnt padams from T.Brinda, she generally did not sing in the concerts. In Brindamma's 80th birthday concert, MS sang the Varali Padam Valapudasa. The twinkle in the eyes of Brindamma was enough to convey her appreciation of the singing of her disciple.
[*]Regarding learning of the Kavadichindu MS used to say"Avar ((Musiri) ullasamaka sollikuduthar. Nanga sallabamaga padukirom.

I felt that the value addition from the narration was pretty minimal. Seemed to steal time away from the musical presentation. Just letting the main artiste speak a little may also have made more sense.

But may be it did help sell the project to the sponsors and increased the enjoyment of some of the other members of the audience.
