Notes
=====
dEvi nIyE - was for MSS, he said and became emotional at 'amudanayE iniya muttamizhh vaLarta' - he paused to say that MSS played a great role in nourishing music [just as goddess is credited to having nurtured muttamizh - iyal isai and nATakam in pANDya nADu]
shankarAbharaNam was chosen for MSS, as she would sing it often

Enjoys what he sings, and takes the accompanists and audience along, ever smiling face.
Super creative swaras - not a surprise at all, super creative sancharas in raga alapanas and some awesome sangatis - even at 71, he is amazing !!!
Reach effortless upto tAra sthAyi panchamam, but difficulty in mandhra sthAyi, . he cleverly avoided. NO vocal support today, yet carried on for 3 hrs nonchalantly
Apart from the rest, the flash of kEdAragauLa was the icing on the cake, before we could realise he shifted to panthuvarALi! Apparently kEdAragauLa and panthuvarALi are Lord Siva's favourites, he said. Rarely does he sing kEdAragauLa, wish the viruttam line was sung a little longer.
Accompanists were mediocre. An artiste of his callibre definitely would do with better sidemen. Violin support was adequate, but not enriching. Mridangam started to play when he started to sing, normally you would wait for atleast one avartana to gauge the tempo etc.. rarely was there a pause in the playing

Re: TVS at Shanmukhananda - 22/8/16
I heard TVS during Ramanavami in Bangalore.he had the same accompanists.suddenly he is not bringing/getting good accompaniments commensurate with his caliber.Definitely the nraval and swara prastara by him need very good percussion support.it is a great pity.
But recentlly in one of the concerts by SRLK mandir,he had Nagai Muralidharan and Mannargudi eswaran.the concert was top class and available in Shaale live.

Re: TVS at Shanmukhananda - 22/8/16
Here are a few impressions from my side, to supplement arunsri's review.
I actually liked the accompanying artistes, all of them. The tani in particular was very engaging and solidly executed.
TVS's enthusiasm is almost inspiring, but it does lead to too many flourishes and climaxes in almost every ending, which gets a bit tiring. When he sings at normal volume and especially in the middle octaves, it is so pleasing. Top sa in full throat, no one to match TVS. But quite a bit of oversinging, especially in flourishes touching the top notes after pallavi, anupallavi and to end the song.
The thing I enjoyed most was actually the viruttam in Kannada, which was very striking and gave a very sharp view of this ragam. The opening part of the Sankarabharanam alapana was also good, and the Brindavana Saranga tanam were excellent. Hearing him sing Rasali ragam for the first time. The violin was a bit tentative in Rasali, but was perfectly supportive and adequate in other ragas. Couple of mis-steps in tala in kalpana swara, not helped by TVS's completely flowing style of keeping the beat (TVS clearly does not need to 'count' anything, he's just in the flow all the time).
