The start is not a traditional varnam or song on Lord ganesha. The starting is a major song in raga MOHANA.

Rsachi,rajeshnat,Chellappa,

Pl listen to the above concert. The first song is a major krithi. When TMK sings there is such a great fuss mde about the concert format.
Finally i wonder whether so much importance be given to TMK when he violates concert format?

AM is not making a song and dance about it. She is not disparaging the format and its adherents. She is not saying that to begin a concert with varnam is idiotic.
SSI used to begin the concert with MMG or Begada etc and sing Swaras also.
I have agreement with TMK on many points incl the need to take CM beyond its present enclave. But that has to be done constructively. Music is not developed by jerks. It does follow tradition and change comes about in tradition creatively, not by a proclamation or propaganda.

Starting a concert with a major kriti, while may be a but unusual, is not considered a deviation. Depending on the duration of the concert, this can often be a good choice. This is quite independent of who is doing it.

None of you having point blank answers.Looks all are in agreement that the artist can alter the concert pattern, but do not criticise and feel superior
just do not make statements sitting on the dias.Be polite and in case you feel duration of concert is reduced, then have liberty to start the program by major krithi.
It is just the sheer arrogance of TMK and not TMK's music which is not liked.
Any way just changing the order of songs is not creative development of music.

The format has been around for 50 odd years and has stood the test of time as an artist said in TMK's presence (duly rebutted by him). It is not sacrosanct, but sabotaging it whimsically is not a change with the flow which alone tradition absorbs. Even In Amrutha's concert two heavy pieces as openers is not all that appealing, but it may be due to the force of habit. The objection to TMK is certainly not to his music, which arguably is the best today (voice, command, purity, imagination). None of his objections to the format has any merit. As i have been following, these objections are evolving after the 'causeless rebellion' has been hatched. In Unnati, when he sang viriboni as the main item in the middle, the one reason he gave was true and convincing, 'I felt like doing it'. I am perfectly at home with it. An artist must have liberty to offer the music that he is comfortable with it. (I am not convinced that the challenge to the format has been more than a knee-jerk reaction). He made far too many statements casting aspersions on the artists as he is doing on almost all the causes he espouses (in none of which he is a pioneer or a true contributor). It is wrong to see the objection to TMK as based on the format. If it appeals to the audience, so be it. There is no issue here.

Thanks KVC.
The choice is left to the artist and his natural instincts can violate the format sometimes. There is no issue. It is not necessary to violate for violation sake or defying tradition.
