Dear friends

Am new to this forum, let me introduce myself as S.Kodandaraman, retired from BSNL Telephones. I visit many talented youth performances more than the already famed artists.

This season I had been to couple of concerts at Brahma gana sabha. On 19th I heard Bhavadharini and Amrutha in the afternoon.

Bhavadarini sang an impressive Sharaavathi ragam and a Dikshithar krithi which was obscure. It was followed by a very elaborate Shankarabharanam with Swara raga Sudha. The last piece was a Thillana in different nadai's was announced by the artist to be a composition of Dr. Balamurali Krishna. The overall performance was applaudable. The voice range of the artist was really awesome. That day Somehow the mridangist Arjun who played that day showed lack of interest in his thani.

Amruthas concert was brisk in the begginning but got little dragged towards the end. Repititions of song lists sometimes doesnt bring much flavour to rasikas. At the outset I find that many youngsters lack not in talent but in good accompanying artists particularly good violin and mridangam support. When the main artist is improvising the accompanists also need to be equally or more responsive.

Shall write more in the coming days.

Mr. Kodandaraman, I appreciate the time and effort that you have put into reviewing these budding artistes. Please keep the reviews coming and provide more details about the musicians (guru, style/patantara etc) and the song lists if you can. Thank you.

Yes, i remember the list of songs at Brahma gana sabha of Bhavadarini

Vidhulaku with ragam swaram
Ninnuvina with ragam
Sharavathi with ragam
Swara raga with raga and swaram
A new thillana by Dr. BMK
Viruttham
Tha thai endru in Sindu bairavi

I also went to Music Academy yesterday by the same artist
She began with a Saveri varnam with 3 speeds. An impressive Harikambhodi rama nannu brovara with swaram.Tharunam idamma ( dont know the ragam) Then came a very impressive Vinatha suthavahana with swaram just resembling the D.K.Jayaraman improvisations. thodi with Shri Subramanyo was an apt choice. Thani by a youngster again was not satisfactory.
Then came pranathaarthi a new unheard song.
Karthikeya in Valaj and the later half was Virutthams with Muruga muruga ena ni sol and va va murugayya.

Somehow there was resemblance to the D.K.Jayaraman music.

Since DKP was DKJ's as well as Bhavadharini's guru, I am not surprised that she reminded the reviewer of DKJ!

Bhavadarini

A fine and accomplished vocalist. I heard her at Indian Fine Arts on 23rd Dec in the afternoon slot. She was excellent in her presentation of 'Sri Rama saraswathi' in Nasikabhushani with raagam; Sri Sathyanarayanam in Subhapanthuvarali. Her Thillana in Sindhubairavi was really amazing that day. Swarnalatha on the violin was a good support.

I was wondering why such good artists are given only afternoon slots, It seems Bhavadarini sang substituting Gayathri who was ill that day and refused to perform.

Google helped me trace this website: www.bhavadhaarini.com

This season many artists have been cancelling concerts after being booked. Somehow this substitutions sometimes works out to be even more better than the artist who were previously booked by the Sabhas!!!

After reading that Sowmya has been booked by maximum number of Sabhas this time, I tried to attend her prestigious Music Academy Slot and unexpectedly it was cancelled due to ill health of Sowmya!!
