Like John Smith or Joe Blow - but for a carnatic music rasika.

We may perhaps say 'karnatakam' simply because that is what the family and friends think of listeners of CM!

Re: What is a good generic name for the average CM rasika?
To guide the thinking so we catch on to Suresh's drift, it is a context like this
'the typical Joe Blow can't afford to stay at the new five-star hotel'
'Television today is geared to your average Joe Blow'
'What do you think Joe Blow really thinks about all this?'
--
What are the characteristics of a CM Joe Blow? Likes CM but not a geek, Practical, Overall pleasantness of muic is important without too much analysis.can identify a few ragas and knows quite a few popular songs
Something along those lines
--
To use in a sentence, say the term is 'sA dhA' ( can mean sAdhAraNa rasika )
'Your typical sA dhA would not be caught dead in an MDR concert'

What is wrong with the word Rasika ? Why do we need another ? Rasika after all is not an English word that needs to be replaced ! It is a samskrit word understood by all Indians. Perhaps you may classify the rasikas as "beginner rasikas" vs "advanced rasikas".

Rasikap peru makkaLE! (lofty audience) is how we are addressed by the organizers. We come in all shapes and shades--mAmAs and mAmis and younger ones. Even the lofty ones in the audience are different in their assets and qualities. So, Sundara Rajan has a point

sAdA rasika does not any longer get sa-pa music ( aligned to Sruti) OR sa-da-s music ( weighty ones) instead gets a sAda sa-bha music. Walks out for a sa-mo-sa during tani and gets back for a sa-ma-sa (madyama Sruti ) tukkada.

Sundara Rajan: Joe Blow, Joe Sixpack are figures of speech and Suresh is looking for something like that for a CM rasika.
Figure of Speech : a word or phrase used in a non literal sense to add rhetorical force to a spoken or written passage

Think "Paatu Raaman" or "Paatu Ramaa" sounds closest!
May be Sangeeta instead of Paatu for wider acceptance.

Re: What is a good generic name for the average CM rasika?
Once they went to a Carnatic Concert,
Nam, Tom, Ram, and Som.
Nam was a great Tamil kritis' buff,
Tom was crazy about Arudi and stuff,
Ram couldn't have Tyagaraja enough,
Som truly believed the TMK bluff.
All four were keen on the PURE Carnatic,
But different things made each one tick.
If you went looking for the average Dick,
Tom, or Harry, you just couldn't pick.
And I haven't even started about the Mami,
For her stones, gold, and silk, won't get me.
But for THE all important Carnatic Mami,
Music without colour is a double whammy.
Of course,
I say,
Finally:
Glory to the Carnatic Mami, and Mama,
Ni Mahimamemi, O Rama Rama!
Nam, Tom, Ram, and Som.

Re: What is a good generic name for the average CM rasika?
Once I was warned by my friend not to become a MMR (Mamool Mylapore Rasika)and be complacent. When I asked him to explain he replied thus.
When the artist starts singing say for e.g sobillu he (MMR) will jot on a piece of paper sobillu - jaganmohini bit openly so that the next seater willl be able to see and proudly look at him and glance sideways also triumphantly. But even after listening for decades he would have never tried to learn a bit more about Jaganmohoni.
I should say I took to his warning seriously in not becoming a MMR.

Thinking about it - that is a nice theme for a parody of sabha culture - a real contemporary oneshankarank wrote:sAdA rasika does not any longer get sa-pa music ( aligned to Sruti) OR sa-da-s music ( weighty ones) instead gets a sAda sa-bha music. He should first get it composed in Tamil and then translate it to Telugu. Else even the audience in his new found land of music will dismiss it as telungu Dubbu!

That is the level one museum-ization - you lost sense of the philosophy of music ( laya viSranti) and connections to heritage (chandas - verse and meter) . You indulge in philately - stamp collecting ( this rAgA , that song , these notes) !Ponbhairavi wrote:kai yedu ( like kai naattu for illiterates.)

that YACMer and 'thirutt adi recorder' reference brought back a flood of really bad and totally uncomfortable memories. Much more so than when that concert recording related incident happened quite a few years back. I guess I repressed them till now. Now I wish I spoke up then by not accepting the use of our forum for these hot heads to enforce their punishment on one of our members without really even having the courtesy to ask our permission. All that mattered to them was their vengeance, no matter the fact that their self prosecuted verdict and the "tattoo'd on the forehead I am a thief" kind of punishment was so out of proportion and heavy handed. Yikes.. ( I will find a different place as a final destination for this post, may be the trash can

My apologies for the second suggestion.
It is not my intention to insinuate against anyone. In fact most honestly I do not understand the context of any old controversy. In this forum. My previous experience as a sabha secretary has often landed me in embarrassment, towards some artists and it was bitter. the fact remains that my post is hurtful ipso facto and I apologise for the same to anyone and to the forum in general.

Perhaps the bitterness of it has somewhat influenced my feelings towards those who with such

To caricature the lack of diversity of the audience ( another pet theme these days!) - we have to come up with something.
Here it is : Ambi Mama!
And Silk saris are an anathema , given the trauma caused to the bees killed in hot water. So to caricature that for the mamis:
paTTu mami!
That won't be misogynous - as that supports a politically correct cause!!

Looks as if some of the younger members are still stuck with the idea that the present older generation are there forever--they themselves are going to 'become' them in due course, of course
Surely, other sorts, young and not so old--not necessarily Ambi mamas and Pattu mamis--are there in the audience--youngsters and mamis in comfortable and modest salwars and kurtas, all inclined towards CM in varying degrees. The teens too, I might add. They come by two wheelers, autos and by walking, I've seen this at many concerts...

Ok I give it to you guys. I had a slip - it is silk worms.
Lets update ourselves to the times. My brother was so upset that he couldn't get tickets to a TMK concert few years back. He being a chennaite was ruing - all these NRIs ( TMK has a point there !) pay 3k upwards for a TMK concert and he stereo typed them - he saw a Dad with Shaven head and shorts accompanying a girl in Jeans.
So there you go : Shave'n Shorts and Jeans!

Re: What is a good generic name for the average CM rasika?
Here's a poll. What is the most dislikeable thing about an NRI rasika according to you?
1. His shaven head
2. His shorts with braces
3. His hairy legs that stick out however he sits
4. His most irritating accent
5. His eager beaver approach to CM
6. His comeuppance from hosting our artistes when they travel there, hungry for Indian "home" food
7. His nonchalance about $25 tickets that make us wince in pain
8. His chewing gum
9. His explaining CM to his kids in a most irritating manner
10. His very presence during the season
Cautionary note: Relations between India and USA can go chilly if you express too much of an anti-NRI stance. Also note this forum is run by NRIs braving time zones etc.
Post-Script: Everyone I have spoken to, from Sri KVN to.. to.. to.., have categorically stated that NRI rasikas and CM students show greater application and commitment to our music and tradition, and really the future of CM is very bright there irrespective of who wins, Rep. Or Dem.
