A hurriedly written translation below! Please forgive any mistakes :)

antakana dUtarige kincittu dayavilla
chinteyanu biTTu shrI hariya nene manave

The messengers of the lord of death have not the slightest mercy!
Renounce your worries and meditate on Hari, O my mind!

diva rAtriyennade viSayalampaTanAgi
saviyUTagaLanuNdu bhramisa bEDa
avana kondivana kondarttavanu gaLisuvare
javana dUtaru baruva hotta nInariye

Delude not yourself in unending worldliness
And by indulgence in food and drink (saviyUta = declicious food)
O ye all that will kill for gain!
Unbeknownst to you the Grim Reaper lies in wait

monne maduvyAdenai karevudondheraDemme
ninna koNDenu kSEtra phalavu bahudu
honnu haNavuNTenage syalArenu enalu
benna biDuvaLe mrtyu vyartta jIvAtma

Got married just the other day,
And bought some milk-giving buffaloes yesterday
Very fertile are my lands!
Wealth and riches have I,
Surely I cannot die!
Just because you exult so,
Will Death leave you alone, foolish deluded soul?

hosa maneya kaTTIdenu gruha shAnti maneyoLge
basiri heNDadi magana maduve nALe
hasanAgi ide baduku sAyalArenu enalu
kusuridariyade biDaru yamanavaru Aga

House-warming for my new home
A pregnant wife today, the son’s wedding tomorrow
So beautiful is life, not for me is death!
So you may say, But Yama never forgets!

putra huTTida divasa hAlinUTada habba
mattobba magana upanayana nALe
artiyAgide baduku sAylArenu enalu
mrtyu heDataleyalli naguthirpaLayya

Today’s the birthday of a son, ‘Tis time for celebration!
Upanayana on the morrow for another, so he can daily offer oblation,
There’s plenty in life, surely I will not die!
Under Death's very shadow, you indulge in such delusion
And all the while he laughs at you in derision!

aTTaDugeyuNalilla iSTa darushanavilla
koTTa sAlava kELva hottanariye
kaTle tumbida mEle kSaNamAtra iralilla
aSTaroLu purandara viTTalanenu manave

Never tasted the ambrosia, never saw His divine form!
You while away time taking back what you have loaned!
Not a moment for you when when the great darkness descends
Meditate on Purandara Vittala before it is too late, O my mind!

Great translation, Girish! Thanks for sharing. The bolded sentiment reminds me of a phrase from 'kereye nIranu' where he exhorts us to 'hariya karuNadoLAda bhagyava hari samarpaNe mADi bratukirO'! Awesome!

Ravi,
A crowning glory, your post. Thanks :)

Sowmya's singing kAlA with such bhAva!

Girish-a's lovely translation of antakana dhUtarige (is he still active on Rasikas?).

And your bringing Arunachalak kavirAyar's lines!

Rasikas has you, an asset when it comes to translating lyrics with such sensitivity and care :)

I have an audio recording of Sri Nedanuri's concert in Winnipeg, Canada from the year 1984 (if I remember right) - he has beautifully sung this in bhAgESri.

Girish,
I read this thread and your worthy translation just now. Very good!

Please allow me also to give my spin on the meaning.

The whole song is an admonition to the human mind who thinks, 'I have to do this, I have to enjoy this, death can wait, I can make sure I enjoy all this before I die..." etc. Death waits for none and not for anyone's sense of having finished everything on the To-do list or as they now say, Bucket List.
So when one is aware of the possibility of death striking at any moment, one is advised to turn to the Lord in the hope of not averting death but avoiding a senseless and illusion-filled life before that moment.

The last stanza states this with more examples:

aTTaDugeyuNalilla = I haven't yet eaten my favourite fancy dishes
iSTa darushanavilla = I have not yet seen my favourite sights (could be Kashmir, Switzerland, Disneyland, whatever...)
(while calculating thus,)
koTTa sAlava kELva hottanariye = remember you are here on "borrowed time" and Death can come anytime and demand your life (=borrowed life)
kaTle tumbida mEle kSaNamAtra iralilla = kaTle here means accumulated karma (sanchita) which when exhausted, the knock of Death comes, without giving even an extra moment. The idea is that one lives as long as karma is still left to be worked out in this janma. Of course the residual karma (accumulated in this janma, not sanchita which is carried over from the past) will determine one's after-life ie rebirth.
aSTaroLu purandara viTThala nene manave = Before that inevitable and unpredictable moment of death, O mind, remember Vitthala.

This kriti is a summary of the 16th chapter of Bhagavadgita= Daivaasura sampatvibhaaga Yoga.
