Vid Suryaprakash, Vittal rangan, Sundaresan 25 Sep 2016-Bengaluru

Post by Rsachi »

Review, discussions and photos are to be found in this thread:
http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic ... 2&start=25

The following are two extracts:

Congratulations to Sri Nageswaran and family on having organised a highly successful concert of Vid Suryaprakash in Sobha Tulip today. We enjoyed over three hours of resonant and imaginative vocal music of Sri Suryaprakash combined with the sweet strains of Vittal Rangan's violin and a very nadam-filled mridangam accompaniment of Vid Sundaresan.

We had a big crowd of connoisseurs including Sri Muni Rao, Sri KSSR, Sri Cienu, Sri HN Bhagavan, Sri KV Chellappa, Dr Subamaniam retd GM RBI, Sri KP Jayan, Mrs Jayan, Sri Pramod, Sri Anand Srinivasamurthy, several musicians and local residents. The jam-packed hall thoroughly enjoyed the rich fare that included
1.Roopamu Juchi - Todi pada varna
2.Vagishwari Vani Sarasvati- Sarasvati
3. Innalu Daya - T-Narayanagowla
4. Kaa vaa vaa
5. Bhuvaneshvariya - Mohanakalyani
6. Sri Lalite - Bhairavi - Annaswami Shastri
7. Four raga RTP tribute to MSS - Hamsanandi, Hamsadhwani, Hamsanadam, Hamsavinodini in misra chapu
8. Tani
9. Viruttam followed by song on Muruga made famous by MSS
10. Kangalidyatako Kaverirangana noDada - Sindhubhairavi
11. Mangalam

Suryaprakash impressed me with his thoughtful song selection and an excellent Bhairavi as well as a highly creative and appealing RTP. The raga changes and anuloma pratiloma were done very well. Vittal proved equal to the challenge of following the RTP. The Bhairavi song was new to me, it has great sahitya.

Vid Sundaresan was wonderful. He has a rich experience of working in Kalakshetra and has done also teaching assignments in Singapore.

I congratulate again Sri Nageswaran. He has a Midas touch in organising concerts!

From Sri Munirao:
Truly, experience of rasikas who listened to the Maestro Surya Prakash, Maestro T.R.Sundaresan and immensely talented, very promising and young vidwan Vittal Rangan, was like going to darshan, expecting the tirtham but blessed with panchamrutham. Very soon, all these Vidwans are going to serve us, rasikas panchabhaksha paramanna prasadam, with rasikas unqualified support.

SP has clear vision of aesthetics, both in planning and delivery. The sadhana sampath enables him to translate the ideas in execution and results. He show cased his manodharma to deliver delight. There is discipline, value for lakshya and lakshana in all his renderings, be it alapana, tana, neraval, svarakalpana and pallavi. He showcased his vidwath with thrayi sthayee and kalam, with confidence. His creativity in pallavi composition in respect to MSS Amma, aptly in the presence of Sri Cienu and Ms.Aishwarya Srinivasan (who was in high admiration of svarakalpana-mukthayis and intelligence in pallavi-RTP. With long performance experience, he has very good grasp and intelligence to meet the expectations. He deserves higher appreciation, acceptance and support of rasikas and patrons for his attainment of state of a Great Maestro. The way he started with Todi padavarnam and completed it, tells about his diligent practice. Maestros Gurus used to warn the performing sishyas, 'Todiyai (modalle eduthenna), tondidum, vaadipovai', as taking up todi is a real challenge as the very opening composition.
I desire and expect SP to focus his attention on 1. control on naaseekam, 2. Patanthara Sudhatvam, 3. Value and discipline of temptation of sangati ornamentation, brighas to the composition of Mudduswamy Deekshita, 4. Dasara pada within 32 batdeesa ragas(not in asampoorna/scale) and original varna mettus in karnaparampara, not the popular version of HM (original varnamettu of 'Kangaliddyathako'-Todi-Sri Pada Raya/Rangavittala) and Legend Pandit Bhimsen Joshiji.5.vilamba kala pramana. 6.Visradhi 7. Gamaka pushti (Veenai, gottu ) along with the popular and celebrated Nadasvara style. SP can achieve and rise to become a great maestro, in the very near future.

TRS, gladdened my heart with his ideals of tradition, the jati;teermanam; kuraippu. Naadanubhavam. Tani was very good but his sollus for compositions and singing style of SP (in line, supportive) deserves full praise. I noticed his devotion to Nandikesava and Istadevatha, Vighneswara, by placing the tiny idols near the mridangam and indeed TRS is blessed!

VR, as was quite evident to all the rasikas, his technique of bowing, fingering, quick grasp, good following in his very good violin accompaniment. He succeeded to win the Senior Vidwans, SP and TRS appreciation. Very minor mistakes were noticed, which with higher sadhana and experience he can easily avoid. He has promise to rise and achieve higher Vidwath.

As RSachi Sir conveyed gratitude to the commitment, dedication and contribution of Sri SN Sir and his family members for the cause of KM's appreciation in his vote of thanks, truly reflecting the rasikas emotions.

Vidulaku mrokkeda, Kovidulaku mrokkeda.

Rasikas.org has been a great forum in the cause of music and one of the many forces that count in fostering a niche art. The greatest patrons are of course the sabhas in the absence of royal patrons.
It is great that several musicians are members here and contribute.
Thinking of patrons, Sri S.Nageswaran has been doing great service, organising concerts in his house and throwing it open to rasikas. Such concerts are precious as usually knowledgeable rasikas assemble for the event and I am sure the artists cherish it. The concerts are subsequently uploaded taking it to a wider net of ardent rasikas. This is invaluable service.
The concert of Sri Suryaprakash that kept a full-house audience regaled in the Sobha Tulip hall with a pleasing swimming pool outside and some table tennis in the next room, was one such occasion got up by Sri Nageswaran. Sri Nageswaran’s family of three generations were in the audience.
Sri Suryaprakash is an unassuming artist who connects with the fellow artists and rasikas readily and cheerfully. The concert was a sumptuous feast.
It was nice to see Sow. Aishwarya squat in the front and enjoy the concert visibly, keeping the beat. That reminds me of Nick’s comment about Amritha Murali attending the concerts of other artists. As an aside, it will be nice if senior artists attend the concerts of younger ones whenever they get time.
What a way to spend an evening in a divine atmosphere in terms of not only the songs that are soaked in bhakti (forget secularism, bhakthi is a distilled contribution and aesthetic culmination in music in Indian context), but also the involvement of rasikas all of whom have the unifying interest in CM without any reservation.

braindrain wrote: pallavi line was "Anandini mAm pAhi, sakala dhvani svarUpiNi, sunAda niranjani, vINAvinOdini, sadAvAhini, hamsa-"

sang at hamsAnandini... hamsadhvani svarUpiNi , hamsanAda niranjani, hamsavinOdini sadAvAhini.. at different takes. He did a very complicated, but very well executed trikalam in all 4 ragas. Pretty commendable job. Alapana for hamsAnandi and hamsadhvani were detailed, to some lesser extend for the other two. With the complexities and the intricacies involved, the shift, switch, slide (or whatever) from one to the other were brilliant.
This pallavi line is slightly modified(phrase veenavinodhini is new ) since the last time he sang at MFAC@ Chennai (which I reviewed) and Sydney (that mohan reviewed). May be this pallavi line should be modified in the 4 raga pallavi thread that I created

I was personally thinking when nageswaran sir was initially stating it was just 2 and half hours concert , bangalore may not be lucky. But with 3 and half hours , that too with hamsa pallavi it must have been a wonderful concert . Kudos To suryaprakash ,Vittal and TRS (love that name may be we can call him TRS Jr)

Jayan/Rsachi,
I dont know if you observed when he sings bhairavi that too in neraval there is significant shade of his less marketed paramaguru Semmangudi typecast in neraval than his more marketed paramaguru madurai mani. I think this main krithi sri lalithe was performed the most by DKJ /DKP.

Jayan has reviewed in his blog this concert(Lovely jayan)
https://kpjayan.wordpress.com/

Nageswaran SIr
Take your time avasaram illa quality check pannitu pOdungO sir , looking forward for the audio/video.

Rajeshnat,
No wonder they say great minds think alike. I told Sri Suryaprakash that his Bhairavi niraval had a distinct stamp of the Semmangudi school! He acknowledged it with a big smile!

While we wait for the concert, what Sachi said about Suryaprakash's smooth rAgA changes in the RTP triggered my memory about how one day, as we were going back and forth about my songs for the EngirundO vandAi CD, he came up with this idea for the rAga mAlikA maduvuNDa vaNDAnEn, unaik kaNDadum nI en vaduvenavE maNamuDitEnE. He inserted svarA patterns between each verse which gelled so well with the lyrics and conveyed the joyful mood of the song :)

Arasi - he's done the same (inserted peppy svaras passages) with pArkkaDal alai mElE - IMO, his version is so much more suited for a dance piece than even the iconic one of Smt. MLV's!!

Sri Nageswaran is indeed doing extra ordinary service to the Carnatic Music community by organizing concerts of artists of repute.Sri suryaprakash over the years has carved a niche for himself in rendering Kritis of Trinties ,papanasan sivan ,Purandara Dasa etc.I was surprised at his clear pronunciation in kannada.Excellent Bharavi Alapana followed by Sri Lalite. The accompaniments completely synchronised with Surya prakash with proper individual volume levels. In fact the Individual Volume levels play spoil sport in many reputed halls.
The hall and venue was apt for the occasion with overflowing Rasikas. It was indeed a grand meeting of Rasikas of our forum.Perhaps time permitting I would have been happy to interact with esteemed Rasikas gracing this Occasion.

Thank you for the audio links.
The second song is one of my favorites. Just heard - his rendition is good but I have heard much better ones. This song is a bit tough and unusual and he does struggle a bit. One of the best renditions of this rare song is by a duo, available in Sangeethapriya. The first two lines in charanam are most suitable to do neraval.
The recording quality is awesome. Thanks very much.

Thanks for the audio links. Downloaded. A suggestion - perhaps this can be loaded in sangeethapriya.org, adding to that wealth?

In the Thodi song rUpamu jUchi the first line is sungh as 'rUpamu jUchi vachchi vachchithini'. Should this be 'valachi vachchithini".

It was Tiger who changed it to vachi vachitini, which is wrong and is meaningless. But the Kalakshetra students sing as above. It should be as you said 'valachi vachitini'. This is how it is in SSP.

Though the other krithis are enjoyable, his Narayanagowla was not up to the mark. There are lot and lot of repetitive phrases; rishaba nyasam is missing and he frequently entered into the territory of Sama and Kedaragowla.

Sachi
I just listened in a private session with quality speakers this concert and your closing comments. You are indeed a treasure slow and firm speaker (I thought you went from your idol KVN to becoming like a MDR in atleast speaking), i was just googling the word hamsa ,the result that gave me is: hamsa symbolizes the interplay of the chakras, the energy flow in the body, the five senses, and the mudras that effect them.

For few years I was thinking when i come to bangalore , i will come and see you. It looks one of the days soon, I will come to see you and then only see others in bangalore.

On the pallavi of 4 ragas , my experience of hearing it in MFAC is fresh and this is more improvement on the pallavi neraval with possible words to polish to give more saraswathi touches. What can I say the hamsAnandi is a vAli like raga it wipes out all of those 3 remaining hamsa's- the hamsanandi and hamsadhwani gives great fight, the hamsavinOdhini is little too submissive in nature . TRS jr rocks along with Vittal Rangan and of course Suryaprakash.

You mentioned a girl in the audience was singing then kA vA , who is that cienu's daughter aishwarya or Nageswaran sir 's grand daughter srinidhi?

Nageswaran Sir
Your are like our Malgudi Days Narayan , it does not matter whether it is bangalore tulip or chennai karunai kutil - it is your unbridled passion along with your lovely family support to bring more * quality with time * that gives us the special oomph.

Rajesh,
Thank you for your eloquent response to the concert! Yes, Sri SN deserves all credit for filling up Sobha Tulip with the nectar of music and a swarm of rasika bees!

Yes, it was Aishwarya Srinivasan who sang at her home that time.

My speech was improptu and inspired by the music.

Thank you for promising to visit me in Blr soon. I eagerly look forward to it and will collect a few more rasikas!

Looks like I missed a good one :(
Will make it at the next meetup. Life has been busy, and I have become infrequent at the concert circuit :(
