Sikkil Gurucharan - Sri Puthanalkkal Bhagavathi Temple, Cherpulassery, Kerala - 9th Oct, 2016

Post by dipukaruthedam »

Vocal: Sikkil Gurucharan
Violin: T H Subramaniam
Mrudangam: Palladam Ravi
Ghatam: Kottayam Unnikrishnan

Concert Type: No-break concert - intro and felicitations completed at the beginning itself!

01. jalajAkSa ninne (Varnam) - hamsadhvani (O)
02. srI gaNapathini - sowrAshtram (O,S)
03. tatvameruga taramA - garuDadhvani
04. pAhi janani - nATaKurinji (A,S)
05. hiraNmayim lakshmim - laLita
06. pAlinchu kAmAkshi - madhyamAvati (A,N,S,T)
- neraval at kAntamagu pEru
07. ranjani mrdu pankaja lOcani - ranjani ragamalika
08. idathu padam - kamAs
09. niraimathi - hamsAnandi
10. mangaLam

Post the short varnam, Sikkil Gurucharan started with an overview of Sowrashtram, followed by krithi and few rounds of swaras which were nice. tatvameruga taramA was rendered nicely. Expected few quick swaras at the end, but it was skipped. Then he started on a nice and detailed alapana of nATaKurinji followed by the Swati krithi pAhi janani, ending with some nice set of swaras. laLita was sung leisurely and without any embellishments (was hoping for a neraval here). madhyamAvati was the selected main and was treated with detailed explorations. Post-main included a nice ranjani ragamalika and 2 more popular thukdas. Accompaniement was good.

Overall, a good concert of around 2 hours and 15 minutes. Was a bit disappointed that he chose not to sing longer and reduced the amount of manodharma explorations, though the concert had started right on time and people were ready for more :(

What is so special about this temple ?
"O" means "overview" ? What do you mean by overview ?
Did he sing any tillAna ? He is the only person who always ends up with TillAna and begins with varNam.

- It is one of the prominent temple in that area and regularly conducts music programs during Navarathri.
- O - overview, very short alapana, say (much) less than a minute (typically only by lead artist)
- No, he didn't sing a tillAna this time.

'O' for overview- that's quite appropriate, Mr.Dipu!

In a lighter vein, I can suggest one more: 'B' for Bahalam - if the rendering is noisy!

I am surprised that he has not sung a valid prathimadhyama ragam.he normally balances by taking both the madhyama ragas as sub main or main .i.e if the sub main is m1 the main will be m2.I have ignored the tail enders of course.A very good artist who strives hard to give 100% always.

If somebody sings a very brief sketch of ragam for say 1 minute, we can call it outline and O for abbrev.

Ranjani in the ragamalika and Hamsanandi Tirupugazh are Prati madhyamam ragams. In some concerts, it is done like that. It is the overall enjoyment of the concert that matters.
