Lineage/parampara/school/bani/style

Post by Sivaramakrishnan »

(This thread can be considered a sequel to CRama's review of the concert of Trichur brothers at Vani Mahal Chennai, a few days ago.)
***********
Many usages are employed in appreciation of (carnatic) music to denote the artist's association/tutelage under a particular Guru/ teacher / group of teacers or even an area to which the predecessors can be traced to.
Though attempting to differentiate between the usages may not be warranted or not even worthwhile (to many) it would be in larger interest to pool our opinion to ensure that there is some clarity in what is intended by employing certain usages.
In Hindustani music perhaps the only (equivalent) usage I have come across is 'Gharana'.
I had already expressed my views in my reply to CRama's review.

I feel in our reviews there is no need to mention when we know for certain that an artist belongs to one school for e.g VS.But there are artists who have changed schools and if you find a shade or mixture of multiplicity we may mention.Subbudu used to write like that.Even in HM we have artists addpt in multiple gharana.
But normally artists don't reveal the names of gurus who taught them initially and rather want to be called as disciple of so and so who taught them at the graduation level.Swami Haridasgiri decried this practice. So for e.g when AR sings by mistake if he brings in a bit of SSI that should be mentioned. 8-)
