Atleast 75 years back I guess every rasika then had an extreme abhimAnam where they listen to different vocalists but always had a special liking to the mahavidwan Flute Mali. Perhaps Ramani Sir did hold a crowd and audience , KS GOPalakrishnan is my favourite but is in hibernation for atleast a decade plus. All said to an extent flute is having a diminished support from rasikas , but sandiego was quite good . All said Flute gives a sense of calmness/serenity mood to a little pro vocalist mindset within me.I had a chance to drive from LA to SanDiego to attend this concert , which was titled by the IFAA organizers as a deepavali celebrations- bamboo special concert . This is my second concert that I am hearing Jayanth live .

Jayanth is the grandson of TS Sankaran .He certainly has the fingering and layam control that has considerable aural footprints with the legendary Flute Mali. Jayanthi started with the right kalapramanam in the fairly longish varnam maatE in ,,,, . There was a considerable nAdham in ,,,, and the full stop came at the right time after giving me sufficient kamas muse. The next #2 manasuloni of T in varamu is a very dear number , i could hear brigas in line with the legendary GNB, they were quick and there was no drag . The swaras had considerable nadai change , perhaps there was one time slip from both the flautist and the percussion team. After quick swirl of manasuloni the drop of leisurely gait of MD in Yamuna kalyani , was wonderful. Nanda gopala texture was very much a copy book style of Maharajapuram santhanam and I loved his leisurely sangathis - not as leisurely but still borderline in leisure. Very recently jayanth is also learning from sanjay subrahmanyan . I could spot the influence of sanjay who has taken a bit of santhanam in nanda gopala.

The instrument centric sogasajooda tharama usually shows the flute pyrotechniques and one could hear a lot of podi swaras in quick turns - not that great but it was pretty good. Bhairavi main was a pracheena bhairavi , the gamut of bhairavi was so well done and the rendition of sari evaramma stayed intensely classical .To me jayanth showed his musical stature right there in the main.

The organizer said the concert will go for 2 and 1/2 hours just after introduction . Jayanth had about 50 minutes post tani. He could have gone with a RTP. Jayanth went with a long tail wagging thukkkadas . The flute was changed to the longer Bansuri one for the bhoopali bansivAle and was well received . The pick for me was the Lalgudi jayaraman extraordinary thillana in madhuvanti , it oozed with enough oomph that I forgot the previous few navarathri sundal thukkadas. Little more leisurely blow and stillness would have given more oomph in chinnan jiru and maithreem bhajatha.

BU Ganesh Prasad has so much of right press -the school of V V Subramaniam was right there during bhairavi .He was slightly bit more cautious and to me he bought in more intense carnatic idioms with his bow. The percussion team rocked in my opinion .Ghatam karthick is just fantastic during song rendtions at times he helping Jayanth with the taalam in one hand and gentle/ firm tapping in ghatam with another hand was wonderful. Bhoopathy played well and his anticipation was near perfect. The tani was a tricky talam and the brilliant taps of ghatam karthick gave intensely satisfying experience to the charge brought in by bhoopathy.

May be few things could have been better
--------------------------------------------------------
# Jayanth certainly is intensely classical . He also used atleast 2 or 3 sizes of flute . He did not have any varying shruthi. But I missed a little more leisurely longer blows which to me is a unique USP for every flute concert.

# Deepavali celebrations with bamboo melodies would have tasted better with Bhusvanam and Atom bombs (RTP) then a long tail of bijili vedis ( thukkadas ). He had time , he could have cut atleast 3 tukkadas and extended with a RTP. Also with no real submain and only a main , RTP would have been a great addition.

# Atleast not having one another alapana other than bhairavi was dissapointing.

Special shout out for the organizers

The sound testing was done perfectly and they were open to feedback . THe two main organizers , shri shekhar gave a lovely introduction and shri venkatachalam gave a lovely closure speech appreciating contextually each and every no. I also heard from shri shekhar that they are celebrating their 10th year celebrations for a week in april 2017. That is wonderful to hear and best wishes to them . They simply rocked .
