IDENTIFY THE RAGAM

Post by S.NAGESWARAN »

Dear Rasikas,

My grand daughter Sreenidhi gave a short one hour concert in March 2013.

I am giving the download link of one song here.

03 Mayil Vagana Ragam SREENIDHI'S CONCERT;

http://www.mediafire.com/?qt12i4pdibqb3n5

As a Rasika for the past 5 decades, I haven't listened to this song from the past masters or the current artists.

I request all the Rasikas to enjoy the music and identify the raga and whether they have heard this song from any musicians.

Thanks Sri. Nageswaran. Nice to see Sreenidhi again in the video. The quality of the High Def video is quite stunning.

She has sung this song quite well. I have not heard this song before. It sounds like Sri Ranjani to me. ( or Abhogi? )

Nageswaran,
Sreenidhi's voice is as sweet as ever.

VK,
Sriranjani, AbhOgi--but since I heard the harikESa mudrA at the end, wonder if it's a rAgA which is something else?

Lakshman,
I couldn't find it even in your list. What is it?

Dear Rasikas,

MR.Rsachi had correctly identified the raga.

Due to the error in listening, I have given the initial line of the sahithya wrongly.

The correct wording will be" SHIKHI VAHANA, DEVASENAPATHE".

Sri Sharmaji, guru for my grand daughter Sreenidhi always select and teach rare raga / rare krithi to my grand daughter.

Now, I would like to know whether any of our rasikas have listened to this song sung by any musicians.

Sri TNS had done an extensive study of Sri Harikasanallur Muthaiyya Bhagavather compositions.

The uniqueness of the composer is composing songs of duel raga chayas like MohanaKalyani etc.

Rasikas may list out other compositions of him having duel raga chayas.

I am processing the other songs sung by Sreenidhi and upload them in due course for the rasikas to enjoy.

Kindly give feedback reports about the concert.

Kudos to the great master AM SHARMAJI.

Apparently this is a raga invented by HMB ?
No wonder it is close to Abhogi!

I have heard this kriti sung by S.Sowmya once on YouTube. I don't know when. It was in one of her concerts a few years ago and I found out this was composed by HMB. I liked this raga and the song, and have been waiting to hear it again. HMB was a great composer and like BMK has created new ragas. I don't know if this was also one of his raga or he just composed one in this Raga. I will listen to your granddaughter's song soon. I am sure she did very well. Best wishes to her.

Dear Rasikas,
Any mundane repetitive work will make us feel as to why we should do it again and again.
Many a time, my granddaughter used to feel like this whenever she had to learn the music of repetitive nature.

Fortunately she is able to get a chance for singing a short duration concert in functions of my relatives . She prepares sincerely for the concert.

Being a gifted child, she is able to win the hearts of the people who listen to her.

Appreciations from many people who listens to her concert is a very big tonic for her and she is able to learn further lessons from her guruji Sri AM Sharmaji with more enthusiasm.

Now my son-in law is keen to arrange short duration concerts once in two months to motivate her in learning more krithis.

As for the guruji, he is able to teach her rare ragams and rare krithis.

We in the family all enjoy her progress in music.

The down load links of the songs she had sung in a friend’s function on 19th March 2013 is given below.

Drop box links.

Dear Sri Nageswaran,

I heard Srinidhi's rendition only today, but thanks to her and you, I have learnt a new ragam, a new kriti. I have updated my Raganidhi books - both paper and electronic versions. I was also thrilled to note, as I read the other posts, that my own deduction (that although this was pretty close to Abhogi-Sriranajni-Jayamanohari, it could well be a rare raga because of the Harikesa mudra), was reflected by more illustrious rasikas like arasi. Made my day.

I remember hearing a much younger Srinidhi sing for me during one of my visits to your house (when we were in the process of converting my spools)- she was not yet 5, and had just come in after playing with friends, and yet obliged her thatha and an unknown visitor with some soulful singing. God bless that child, and may she grow in stature all the time. I remember telling you this then, and I would like to repeat it - please give her plenty of space - please do not force her into attaining stardom before her time - overdose of anything can be counter productive. She is still a child, so give her incentives - her favourite tablet after the next concert, for example!

Mr Lakshman also lists a third kriti - J 23--Hamsadipaka--Ini yar gati unai anri veru--Adi--Abraham Panditar--KST/ix/pg11

Given that he (Abraham Panditar) lived 1859 to 1919, could he have pipped HMB to the post in the creation of this raga?
Reading about Abraham Pandithar was fascinating: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abraham_Pandithar

Interesting info KMH. The wikipedia article says that AP got interested in music after 1892 at which time HMB would have been 15 years old. They then had an overlap of 27 years during which AP was the most productive in music related research and compositions. This does not conclusively say one way or the other, but narrows the time period.

(The Thiruneveli connection to CM is quite fascinating and under-highlighted with so many branches and sub branches. If I recall correctly, the Tanjore Quartets ancestors came from that region as well. It deserves a separate thread in the 'HISTORY OF CARNATIC MUSIC' sub forum where we can gather and discuss information about various personalities that came from that region. Arasi, interested? At your leisure and appropriate time of course )

Yes, I deduced that as well, vasanthakokilam. I tried to look up AP's compositions, but the few that I could hear were all (lovely) Tamil Christian compositions. My gut feeling is that the raga was probably HMB's creation. He had progressed to being an expert harikatha exponent before he was 20, hadn't he? A pity we have to resort to gut feelings in such issues. Everytime I listen to Classic FM and hear the exact dates of creation of various western masterpieces, I feel sorry we cannot accurately date our own gems.
