Carnatic violin pieces expressing 13 affects?

Post by Constant »

Dear members,

I am conducting a study on Carnatic music at the University of Geneva and I need to find musical extracts that express different affects in this music.

Can you help me to find some by sending links?

Here are the requirements to select the musical extracts:

(i) They need to be solo violin. It’s ok if there’s tanpura, but there should be no other instruments (no percussion for instance), so I guess alapana extracts would be perfect.
(ii) We need 1 extract for each of the following affects:

1. filled with wonder, amazed
2. moved, touched
3. enchanted, in awe
4. inspired, enthusiastic
5. energetic, lively
6. joyful, lively
7. powerful, strong
8. full of tenderness, warmhearted
9. relaxed, peaceful
10. melancholic, sad
11. nostalgic, sentimental
12. tense, uneasy
13. agitated, agressive
Thus, I would need 13 extracts in total where the music is as if the composer/musician would want to express the affective states in question. But of course, if you have only one idea to propose, that's already great for me!!!
Furthermore:
(iii) The affect in question need not be the only affect expressed, but need to be a prominent expressive quality.
(iv) The affect in question, or a closely related affect, must be recognizable by Carnatic music aficionada. Carnatic musicians should agree that, say, extract 1 expresses something like ‘being filled with wonder, amazed’.
(v) The extracts do not need to be understood as expressing these affects by people not familiar with Carnatic music. In fact, it’s even better if one needs to be familiarized with Carnatic music grammar in order to understand the affect.
(vi) Finally, unfortunately, I need the extracts before December so that I can use them for my studies...

Since I lack the experience with Carnatic music, it’s impossible for me to select extracts of Carnatic music where I can be sure that these affects are expressed.

Thank you very much for your help!

Effects, Constant.

Please don't think I'm mean. I get jumped on, on another forum, for regularly making the loose/lose mistake. So often, that I am beginning to learn which is which!

Good luck with your work, and welcome to the site. Do you not have any pieces from your own experience that affect you in these ways?

Constant,

I think a variation in the experimental setup may work better - choose a bunch of violin AlApanas (say 10 or 20) of a fixed duration (say 5 minutes), and ask volunteers to listen to the clips and have them describe the effect created/how they are affected by the clip. You can have 2 groups - people naive to CM, and people who are aware of CM, and compare how the effect varies. You can arrange the data by the rAga.

For example your results could be: a 5 minute violin AlApana of kalyANi evokes amazement in x% of CM-naive listeners, versus y% CM-aware listeners.

To reduce confounding factors you will need to have the same violinist playing in all the clips, so that technique-based differences in aural quality are avoided.

You also need to use people with proper hearing, and who are healthy.
