Thanks meeeenaaaakshi for the song list!

It was a great evening with some wonderful music from the team. The concert was about 2 hrs and 40 min long. Here are my personal observations (wouldn't go so far as to call it a review!):

1. The concert opened with Vatapi Ganapathim, preceded by a raga outline and followed by detailed swarams at Karambuja Pasha Bijapuram. Some nice porutthams were presented by both Jayanth and BU Ganesh Prasad and the swarakalpana ended with a kuraippu.

2. The Poorvikalyani alapana presented in two stages (and with two flutes) was bhava-filled and marked by sowkhyam, with the violinist highlighting the mood and beauty by refraining from playing during several phrases and only playing only during pauses. The violin return also matched the mood set by the main artist. This was one of the highlights of the evening. Neraval and swarams were presented at the typical Paramathmudu line, with some nice kanakku swarams as well.

3. The Chandrakauns alapana also created a meditative mood befitting the pallavi line. Perhaps due to shortage of time, no neraval was performed on the pallavi line and the artists moved straight on to swarams. The ragamalika swarams were rendered alternatively by JAJ (Kalyani, Vasanthi) and BUGP (Kapi, Jog). The Jog was particularly enjoyable. A nice kuraippu and korvai rounded off the pallavi portion, which was followed by the Tani.

4. The tani avarthanam by Murugabhoopathy and Ghatam Karthick was quite elaborate and exciting! The audience responded with prolonged applause after every exchange.

4. Deepali (SKR-special) was very enjoyable! Baro krishnayya was also excellent.

5. The Chandrakauns pallavi line themed on the moon coincided with, or was probably composed due to, the supermoon phenomenon. The meaning of the pallavi line was explained by Jayanth, who also sang it (quite well!) to demonstrate the structure and lyrics.

6. Jayanth put some flute-specific techniques like trilling and certain glides to good use to vary the mood during the Chandrakauns and Poorvikalyani alapanas.

8. Jayanth's excellent breath control was visible throughout the concert, especially in the longer alapana phrases.

9. Both Murugabhoopathy and Ghatam Karthick had excellent anticipation and this elevated the concert quite a bit, both during kriti renditions and during kalpana swaram renditions. They also paused at the right places to accentuate certain sangathis.

10. The artists were also extremely well coordinated, and the sound/volume level of the accompanists matched the flautist's sound level perfectly. The camaraderie between the artists also created a pleasant experience.

11. Ganesh Prasad's restrained and contemplative playing style was perfect for accompanying the flute, with the result that the two instruments blended extremely well.

12. The concert list was well-planned and the same energy level was maintained by the artists from start to finish.

13. The audience was huge (compared to the typical number in South Bend) and almost everyone stayed to the end (around 9.50 pm). The audience was extremely enthusiastic in encouraging the artists and the artists received a well-deserved standing ovation in the end.

Overall, amazing concert by the entire team. Hope to keep hearing more of Jayanth in the years ahead!

An excellent review, Jinija! Hoping to catch a concert of Jayanth's when I'm in India...in Meenaakshi's company, ideally...

What can one say about the other artistes! All so proficient, and ideal accompanists to
boot.

kaLai kaTTa, oru Karthik! A Karthick to enliven a performance!

Now, waiting for the candid shots from our famed photographer...

Could Rasaali make it? I know VK couldn't be there. A shame, this being a flute concert too.

I am making an assumption with the university crowd having a lot of North Indians , the concert goes with few hindustani ragas always getting elaborated . Chandrakowns as a RTP , I have had one chance to hear in vocal live concert . It is a haunting raga . I map it to a popular illayaraja number then , now there is more stickiness . Kudos to Jayanth/karthick and team for
Nila vin azhaginil mei marandhen Kuzhal tharum isaiyinil manam mayangi

May be with winter on .... we can have the line as
Sooriyan varAdhathAl kai nadunginen kuzhal tharum isaiyinil manam mayangi.

Where is rasaali the violinist - grand son of TK jayaraman, ???awaiting for his detailed review

Meenakshi knows that South Bend/Notre Dame for me is the late Prof. Ralph McInerny (author of the Father Dowling mysteries) and the Football Hall of Fame country....Not sure about North Indians....

Apart from McInerny and our religion :) (Football), we do have a small group of musically inclined North Indians, rshankar. About time you pay us a visit :)

arasi, we shall do it :)

rajeshnat, during their stay here and on the day they composed/tuned the pallavi, we had a sunny pleasant weather :)

Vinay came for the concert and joined us for dinner. He will heed our call :)

Meenakshi
Thank you for filtering out the photos and removing out the duplicates . When photos usually come from either you or ramanathan from the cleveland world, clicking a link and then seeing 1 of 323 photos scares me. Looks the artists were well taken and chandrakowns was the result of that.

I see the team is heading in the direction of minus Fahrenheit. Best wishes to the team

Oh, the burden of expectations to find more references to me than JAJ in a thread on his concert!

My apologies for the delay. LIFE came in the way of writing earlier

Jinja has definitely written a comprehensive report and she had I had already discussed and agreed on much of the points she made. So much of my views are already represented. It was a treat to be in the concert!

In terms of adding new information, I think the main thing I can add the is structure of the pallavi. This is my understanding:

Talam: Adi (2 Kalai) Eduppu: 1/2 aksharam (2 notes from samam). Split of lyric is as follows:

Nilavin = 4
Azhaginil = 5
Mei maran = 5 (played in high speed as SNDMD;N;)
Dhen = 3 (and served as arudi karvai)
Kuzhal tharum = 5
Isayinil = 5
Manam Mayangi = 5

Other random thoughts:
- In Poorvikalyani alapana JAJ hit the high Sa at a point in a very natural flow. It did not sound like it was done for thrill or as a display of technical virtuosity. Made the whole upper octave experience very soulful.

- BUGP's following in both alapanas, especially Poorvikalyani was fantastic. He used the base to provide continuity as JAJ explored the upper reaches. Given a parallel discussion on violin accompaniment to flute, in my view this concert was a very good example of how the violinist adds effect. Someone on that thread commented that the good violinsts often stayed silent instead of following note for note. To that I respond with a comment someone made that "Music has 8 notes- the saptaswaras and silence. By not playing, the violinist is still making music and contributing to the muscialty of the concert.

- The Kalyani by JAJ in the midst of the hindustani ragas in the RTP was 100% Kalyani (like good filter coffee) and not at all Yaman. I thought this was quite commendable since it is easy to get into Yaman mode when in that frame of mind.

- My lack of knowledge in Layam limits my observations on the Vids. Bhupati and Karthick. But I will say this:

- If the percussion accompaniment is like an ice cream sundae, Bhupati sir's delectable continuity was the great vanilla ice cream underlying the yummy toppings provided by Dr. Karthick's sparkling interludes.

- They raised the musical experience in each composition and none more so than Baro Krishnayya. It's music (set by TKG sir) is a personal favorite and Bhupati and Karthick sirs really enhanced the rendition with their mixing of soft touches, mel kalam and (yes!) occasional pauses.

- On a technical note, IIRC they played khanda nadai in the tani avaratanam.

- For my friend Rajeshnat, I offer 2 special notes

(a) Your pallavi lyric is very timely as we got our first snow today. Thank you! The 3 South Bend Rasikas will try to set it to Suryakantam or some such to at least get the spirit of the sun in the song.

(b) I read how you called San Diego area a parched land. We have to ask your office to send out to South Bend to really know one. BUT, where there is a desert, there is an oasis. And in our land of Football (disatrous season, thankfully ended) and Father Dowling, that oasis is called the house of Meenakshi and her husband. They are amazing in their dedication for music and their warmth. The artistes love being with them for the care they show for art and the artiste. Recent transplants likes Jinja and I are fortunate beneficiaries of their efforts over a long period of time. This oasis makes us feel a sense of abundance. So you know, you and other rasikas should probably come here rather than 'parched' San Diego! Though small, the audience here is lovely. And adding more hard core rasikas will increase the chances of a Kamboji, Sahana, Mukhari etc. etc.

In summary, JAJ is a very exciting talent who I look forward to hearing a lot in years to come. He is fortunate that he is accompanied on the tour by 3 stalwarts who have been performing since he was probably a toddler. He will probably learn a lot over the course of this tour.

JAJ and I also connected because of grandfatherly Delhi connections. His grandfather (and Guru) Sri TS Sankaran spent almost 15 years in Delhi AIR's Vadya Vrinda, which was of course co-founded by my grandfather. It was nice to connect over such topics with someone a generation younger!

And the food Jinja alluded to shall remain unwritten about for the lack adjectives and for the need to save space on the server that connects all of us..

Best regards,
Vinay/Rasaali

I guess if you have a standard submain poorvikalyani and a main kamboji , it may please Vinay the violinist. But let us really have a chandrakowns and other haunting ragas . For that you can drive to Balaji temple to Aurora , today. :P

Hope you are well settled in your new town now. Any chance of coming to India this season?
