Sunadavinodini Sivasankari Pahimam in tisra triputa. Was expecting a more overt tribute to MBMK.

Vocal - Smt.S.Mahathi
Violin -
Mridangam - Delhi Sairam

1. OmkAra praNAva (pada varNam) - shanmukhapriyA - Adi - Dr.M.Balamuralikrishna

3. nIvadanE gAna - sArangA - khanda cApu - jhumpa - tyAgarAjA
4. enduku peddala - shankarAbharaNAm - Adi - tyAgarAjA (main)
5. RTP (sunAdavinOdini shivashankarI pAhimAm) - sunAdavinOdini - tisra tripuTa
6. thillAnA - bEhAg - Adi - Dr.M.Balamuralikrishna

The concert started with a note from the artist that all her concerts this season was to be dedicated to her guru - Late Dr.M.Balamuralikrishna. Smt. S.Mahathi started the concert with an outline of the raga and a pada varnam of her guru - 'Omkara Pranava' in Shanmukhapriya. The piece was followed by a brief alapanai of Valaji and a kriti of HN Muthiah Bhagavatar - 'Jalandhara Supeetasthe' with neraval and swaram at 'Bhava Roga Nivarini'. Following was a small kriti 'Neevadane gaana' in 'Saranga' set to khanda chapu by Thyagaraja. The main piece followed next with a long alapanai of Shankarabharanam.
There was gradual progress in the alapanai and a lot of bhava involved in the process. Then there were varieties of sangathis going up and down the raga. There was a really explicit change of the tonic (grahabhedam) from S to G to create an illusion of Thodi in Shankarabharanam. The illusion was very well executed which created a confusion among the audience to why there was Thodi when a Shankarabharanam alapanai was going on. The grahabhedam bamboozled the audience for around three minutes of so, after which there was a slide down to the mandra sthayi to touch the lower notes. After the alapanai, one of Thyagaraja's signature compositions - 'Enduku peddala' was rendered in Adi (rettai kalai). Neraval and swaram was performed on the lines ' Vedashastra purana...'. The artist used the phrase (S,,M) at the end of every avarthanam of first speed swarakalpana which made it sound like 'Sama vedashastra purana'. This was followed by an exciting thani which inspired the audience to use their hands to count the beats. This was followed by Alapanai in 'Sunadavinodini' which was misidentified as 'Hamasanandi' by many, including me. This was followed by taanam which was not joined in by the mridangam artist. The pallavi lines were 'Sunadavinodini Shivashankari Pahimam'. The Ragamalika swaram included Vagadeeshwari, Darbari and Vasanthi. Next was a very quick thillana of Dr.M.Balamuralikrishna in Behag which was well appreciated by the audience.
